CARRIER PIGEONS AS DOPE PEDDLERS
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10.—Discovery by federal narcotic agents that carrier pigeons are being used to smuggle narcotics into the United States from Mexico, did not provide a surprise for Capt. Richmond P. Hobson, Spanish war hero and ex-congressman, who is now heading a movement to have instruction concerning habit-forming drugs installed in all schools.
Captain Hobson asserts that the fact of pigeons employed in smuggling is further proof that "law is inadequate to cope with the traffic in narcotics," and that the "only permanent remedy is education."
"We must build up in the minds of the children a horror of narcotics, just as ages of race experience built up a fear of poisonous snakes," he said. "We must have them know that morphine, cocaine and heroin are really more to be feared than the fangs of any reptile."
SAY SHOULD HAVE GONE TO BERLIN
COLUMBUS, O., Dec. 10.—We could have gone on to Berlin in our offensive, and should have done it, punishing Germany at every step," declared Attorney James E. Campbell of Columbus, former governor of Ohio. "Signing of the armistice was the biggest mistake the allies made in the world war."
"We could have retained possession of Germany and should have administered it as a conquered province until all the reparations were paid, even if it required 50 years," continued former Governor Campbell.
"Germany did not suffer from the studio EMPLOYE VICTIM OF STORM
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10.—N.C. Plumlee, 23, an employee of the Pickford-Fairbanks studio, was killed during the windstorm when he fell from a scaffold on the studio lot.
Seven persons were reported to have been injured when the residence of John L. Evans, a Los Angeles fireman, was torn from its foundations and rolled down a hill. Those injured were Evans, his wife, and their five children.
A menacing brush fire that swept between Eagle Rock and Paradena was extinguished today by 300 men, who battled the fire. Eight small children and two attendants in the Presbyterian Orphans' Home in the burned-over area, were saved by the firefighters.
WALNUT GROWERS GET LAST CHECKS
That the walnut growers of Southern California have good reason to be thankful is indicated by an announcement from the California Walnut Growers' association, that it has mailed out to local associations the final payment for the current season's first pool shipments.
Between $9,000,000 and $10,000,000 has been distributed among the members during the past six weeks. The total selling charge to the growers by the association, including trade discount and advertising, was 51-2 percent of the gross value of the shipments.
The first pool was somewhat larger than the association directors expected. It ran according to Mr. Thorpe, about 35,000 bags in excess of the estimates made by packinghouse managers early in New Today.

U.P. CRACK TRAIL MAKES RECORD RUN
When the Los Angeles Limited crack train of the Union Pacific glided gracefully into the Angeles station this afternoon completing its run from Chicago in 68 1-2 hours, the monster cific type locomotive seemed purr with pride and satisfactorily pulled a train of br new spick and span Puller equipment considered by railroad men to be one of the finest and most perfectly-appointed trains in America.
"With the installation of a new equipment on the Los Angeles Limited, some interesting fare regarding modern railroad trains have come to light," said Peck. "The Los Angeles Limited requires nine complete trains its operation—three in operation each day, each way, between Cargo and Los Angeles, with additional trains being cleaned and serviced at the termini." One of these trains represents investment of about $422,000, a total investment of nearly four millions for the nine Los Angeles Limited.

"We could have retained possession of Germany and should have administered it as a conquered province until all the reparations were paid, even if it required 50 years," continued former Governor Campbell.

OXFORD COLLEGE MAN AS JANITOR
DENVER, Dec. 19. — Born in England of a wealthy West Indian family, Rev. Jos. A. Thomas Hazell, until recently pastor of a Denver negro Presbyterian congregation, has applied to Postmaster Frank L. Dodge, for a "job" as janitor.
Rev. Thomas-Hazell is a graduate of Oxford. He resigned his pastorate here because of dissention in the congregation and declared he is unable to secure employment as a minister because of "prejudice among leaders of the Presbyterian church in Colorado against negro ministers."

GOING AFTER JEWELRY TAX
Collector of Internal Revenue Rev Goodcell received notice yesterday from the commissioner of internal revenue to investigate all dealers in beads strung on cord or wire to be worn on the person, and dealers in certain religious articles, to see that such dealers are paying tax on such articles as jewelry.
Collector Goodcell further stated that any article worn on the person or apparel for purposes of adornment is held to be jewelry, and is also subject to tax. This includes shoe buckles, and pins, buckles and ornaments used on dresses and hats. A great many milliners, shoe dealers and vendors of ready-to-wear dresses are subject to this tax, and are subjecting themselves to heavy penalties for not paying the same.

THINK STANDARD
WILL OPEN FIELD
"It is the opinion of many drillers that the Standard Oil Co. is about due to make the next big discovery of oil in So. Calif., and will open up a big field at Anaheim."
This is from an article in one of the Los Angeles morning papers. The article declares that far more important than the question of the supply or demand of oil is that of new fields, upon which the continuation of the industry depends.
