ANXIOUSLY AWAIT RESULT OF BIXBY
Long Beach anxiously awaits the outcome of the United Oil Co.'s Bixby well for the extension of the northwest section of the field. The United Oil Co.'s chief goodogist Blodgett has done some remarkable work in the correlation of other wells and he has set the depth of the deep sand for the Bixby well at 4786. If Blodget is right and the deep sand is there the Long Beach northwest extension will be the scene of the next big developments for Long Beach.
On the southeast slope of Signal Hill the San Martinez Oil Co. has another nice well. Just recently this section of the Hill field has begun to attract attention. The recent work of the Ramsey Brothers in bringing in two big wells, and now the success of the San Martinez with a second big producer puts this division of the field in the running. At the San Martinez Oil Co. re-drilled and deepened Booth No. 1 to 4590 and got a 1500 barrel well producing 25 gracity oil.
Among other producers of importance completed last week at Long Beach might be mentioned the 1500 barrel well completed by the Bush-Vectoris Oil Co. at Barns No. 2, the 1250 barrel well finished by the Hub Oil Co. on the Iffland, and the Griswold No. 2 well completed by the Petroleum Midway at 4310.
The production of Signal Hill held its own this past week at 240,000 barrels. New wells coming in are expected to maintain this figure for some little time. Signal Hill's outlook is far from being discouraging.

ASSERT VETERANS BUREAU DISGRACE
By WILLIAM K. HUTCHINSON (I.N.S. Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGTON, Nov. 26—A universal complaint against the use of political pressure in the care of disabled soldiers featured a dozen reports on file today with the senate investigating committee by volunteer commissions from every state.
The reports described conditions as a "disgrace," "betrayal of trust" and a "curse to the veterans bureau."
The commissioners were composed of prominent lawyers, physicians and business men in each state.
"The public investigation just concluded has centered the interest of the country on the veterans bureau," said Senator Oddie, of Nevada, member of the committee.
Senator Oddie continued:
"The trouble in the veterans' bureau seems to be not so much with graft and irregularity as with the deplorably ill-advised manner in which the bureau itself is organized and functions, and with some of the incompetent personnel. The organization of the bureau makes for graft and cowardly neglect, because of the seemingly irresponsibility of

CUMMINS WAGES
FIGHT FOR JOB
WASHINGTON, Nov. 26. Organization of a new senate was up in the air today after preline-in-maneuvers for election of a Republican presiding officer, with its vice presidential prestige, struck a series of snags planted by the insurgent progressive group.
Out of its maze of confusion, it was apparent that four factions were warring for the coveted office. Their candidates are Senators Albert B. Cummins, of Iowa; candidate for re-election; Charles Curtis, of Kansas; Republican "whip"; George H. Moses, of New Hampshire, and George W. Norris, of Nebraska, the progressive group's candidate.
The clash was projected by friends of Senator Cummins, who insisted upon his re-election to the senate presidency while retaining his chairmanship of the powerful Interstate Commerce Commission.
Insurgent progressives fought Cummins' ambition in the hope of forcing him to quit the commission chairmanship in which event Senator Robert M. LaPollette of Wisconsin would succeed to the control of railroad legislation.
The presidency of the senate, until March 4, 1924, will make its occupant the acting vice president of the United States at the latter's salary. It carries a prestige second only to the chief executive himself.
To force the fight on the floor of the senate, the progressive group will nominate Senator Norris for the presidency.
