Eight true bills were returned against him. One indictment charged a felony, that of stopping the Oklahoma legislature on September 26. Edwards, the former governor's chauffer were also indicted and Child Poisoner at Large In San Diego SAN DIEGO, Nov. 23—A child poisoner is at large here according to a report received today from Dr. Walter K. Oliver, veterinary surgeon, who has been treating dogs believed to have been poisoned by the same hand. Poisoned raisins and tempting jam sandwiches have been lures to unsuspecting babies. So far no child has partaken of the tainted delicacies. Parents were warned to watch their little ones lest the evil intent of the poisoner be fulfilled. The others were misdemeanors, charging padding of state payroll and one was a charge of intimidating officers. Dr. A. E. Davenport, state health commissioner and T. P. Edwards, the former governor's chauffer were also indicted and charged with a felony. To charge against the latter two was diverting state funds than Edwards being an employee of the state health department and on the governor's staff as a major in the national guard without rendering any service to the state. The former governor, with three of his counsel, was on hand to make bond as soon as the true bills were recorded at the district court. DRY LAW MAY BECOME SUCCESS DES MOINES, Nov. 23. — Nation-wide support of the prohibition law will finally make it a complete success, according to Mrs. Ida B. Wise Smith, state president of the W. C. T. U., following her return from the national citizenry conference at Washington. The change in public opinion from a lax view on prohibition to strict adherence to the law, will come as the result of the national conference, Mrs. Wise Smith declared. ENORMOUS FIGURE PAID IN PENSIONS WASHINGTON, Nov. 23—More than six and a half billion dollars have been expended by the United States in paying pensions to American war veterans and other government pensioners since 1790, the interior department announced today in making public a review of the business of the pension office during the past year. The total disbursements for pensions up to June 30 totaled $6,606,365,621, of which $6,224,106,631 has been paid out on account of the civil war and $105,533,496 on account of the war with Spain. In the fiscal year 1923 $263,012,500 was paid out in pensions compared with $253,807,583 in 1922. The number of pension certificates issued during the last fiscal year was 73,362, of which 34,961 were for civil war service and 35,894 on account of the Spanish war. Since the beginning of the pension system the government has issued 6,441,165 pension certificates — 5,313,423 to veterans and 1,127,742 to widows. Most of the pensioners, 535,922, live in the United States, but there are 115 in the canal zone, 605 in American insular possessions, and 3100 in foreign countries. At the protection work just completed opposite Richfield where a sound line of posts are wire have been installed, no brass has been placed," continued Wall. "Unless brush is placed there before the water comes, it will be a total waste of money. This work for which money was raised north and west of Annheim, several thousand dollars having been expended. The country also contributed $500. I would very strongly urge contribution to this work to pay a visit of inspection and determine for themselves whether they think an unprotected line of posts and wires... A 400-mile race for the eastern International dog sled derby cup and cash prizes is to be staged during the carnival weeks at Quebec this winter. The race, inaugurated last year, proved one of the big events of the season. The husky dog team maintained at Chateau Frontenac in the Canadian metropolis will be one of the teams entered. Scores of winter sports lovers enjoyed rides behind this team on Dufferin Terrace last winter, including many Americans who visit the winter play sport annually. Five members have been added to this dog team but the newcomers will be a bit too young to enter this year's race, as the low-er photo shows. These puppies, however, will draw much attention. A number of dog teams arrive from Canada and the northern and western parts of U.S. have been received so.
