PAGE TEN COLLECTS $37,000 FINES THIS YEAR Fines collected by Justice J. B. Cox in Santa Ana during the first 11 months of his fiscal year, ending Nov. 30, amounted to $37,-862.50, the Judge revealed today on the eve of the annual grand jury investigation of his office. Auto fines totaled only $265 during the past month, criminal fines $1992 and civil $50. During the 11 months auto fines aggregated $20,097, criminal fines $117,081.50 and civil fines $684. Out of the criminal fines $12,-447, which were for bootlegging and other offenses against the KILL INCOME TAX PORTLAND, Nov. 7.—The voters of Oregon have decided they do not want a state income tax law. Near complete returns early today from Multnomah county and over the state indicate that the majority against the income tax will aggregate 4000 votes. Portland and Multnomah county overwhelmingly voted for the referendum against the income tax, the majority being about 12,000. But 41 per cent of the voters cast ballots in the election. Volstead act, were collected without the payment out of a penny for special detectives and other work connected with conviction, the Judge declared. 20,000 AT AUTO SUPPLY OPERATORS Approximately 20,000 it is estimated, visited building of the West Supply Co. at 11th st. ave., Los Angeles, yesteryear, the formal opening. Local issues for the most part overshadowed national issues everywhere, and turned the tide of election. The new senate will be composed of 51 Republicans, 43 Democrats and two Farmer-Laborites. This allows a Republican majority over the Democrats of eight and a majority over all of only six votes. When it is considered that in that slim Republican majority of six is to be found such independents as Brookhart, of Iowa; Howell of Nebraska; Frazier of North Dakota; Borah of Idaho; LaFollette of Wisconsin; Norris of Nebraska, and Ladd of North Dakota, it will be seen that the Republicans will control the next senate in name only, and only to the extent that they can keep the above named independents in line. The new house will consist of 224 Republicans, 208 Democrats, one Farmer-Labor, one Independent and one Socialist—a Republican majority over all of about 13 votes. As in the senate, there are a number of Republicans included in this slim majority that are distinctly independent in their voting—ten of them are a part of the LaFollette organization in Wisconsin—so that absentees and mavericks straying off the party reservation can easily wipe out margins and put both parties on an even footing when it comes to voting. On the basis of this lineup, the Democrats are going to demand a large sized share in the organization of the new congress. Leaders do not intend to permit the Republicans to run wild in the organization of committees with such preponderant Republican majorities on them that they can RE-ELECT ROLPH SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7—Returns today showed that James Rolph, Jr., who has already served 12 years as mayor of San Francisco, was re-elected yesterday by a plurality of 27,000. Matthew Brady, who gained prominence by his prosecution of Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle, was re-elected district attorney. Women candidates for police judge and supervisors were defeated. NEW YORK, Nov. 7.—The Democratic ticket carried by a large majority in the five counties comprising Greater New York, returns today from yesterday's election show. Up-state reported 16 Republicans to the Democrat's two. Last reports indicated the Republicans increased their majority in the 1924 state assembly to 19 votes, 85 Republicans and 66 Democrats being elected to that body. The Republicans and Democrats each elected two congressional candidates. The Democrats elected Anning S. Prall, in the eleventh district, and John J. O'Connor in the sixteenth, while the successful Republican candidates were Benjamin L. Fairchild in the 24th and Thaddeus C. Weet. DUISVILLE, Nov. 7.—It was evident from practically complete returns today from yesterday's state-wide election that Kentucky has returned to the Democratic fold by a majority conservatively estimated at between 35,000 and 45,000. Incomplete returns from 114 counties give Wm. J. Fields, Democratic candidate for governor, a majority of 53,904, but the remaining counties have always registered a heavy Republican vote in past elections. Charles I. Dawson, Republican governor nominee, today wired his opponent as follows: "Reports from over the state indicate your election. I congratulate you and trust that your administration will be one of service to all the people of the com- days only, Thursday, nd 10th 0, 1923 Shop Anaheim World's Records for NCE, and T STRAIGHT "8" A ROW" and the C BRAKES ECIDE to 9 P.
