LEADERS WATCH OFF-YEAR VOTING
BY GEORGE R. HOLMES
(L.N.S. Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGON, Nov. 6—National political leaders watched with great interest and not a little anxiety today the trend of the off-year elections in a dozen states.
They hope to obtain by today's contest an insight into the temper of the electorate generally, with relation to the approaching presidential campaign.
Congressional elections are being held today in New York, Illinois, North Carolina, Vermont, Kentucky, Arkansas and Mississippi, with one seat in the senate and ten seats in the house at stake.
Maryland, Mississippi and Kentucky are electing governors. Ten other state assemblies are being chosen and various state, county and municipal measures voted upon.
Because of the narrow Republican majorities in both houses of congress, more than usual interest attaches to these contests. The single senatorial election today is in Vermont, where Porter H. Dale, Republican, is opposed by Park H. Pollard, Democrat, a cousin of President Coolidge. The principal issue there has been modification of the Volunteer act. Dale being endorsed by the Anti-caloon League and Pollard favoring modification.
The senate lineup is now 59 Republicans, 43 Democrats and two Farmer-Labor. A Democratic victory in Vermont today would leave the Republicans with a majority of only four over all, admittedly too close to publication.
LIGHT OREGON VOTE
PORTLAND, Nov. 6.—A light vote was the forecast as electors of Oregon went to the polls today to decide whether they want a state income tax.
Early indications were that the referendum measure brought against the bill, which was passed by the last legislature, would be invoked by a heavy vote.
Chief supporters of the income tax are Governor Walter M. Pierce, the state grange, and the state federation of labor.
The great bulk of the wage earners and business men have expressed themselves as being against the bill.
FRISCO VOTING
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6.—San Francisco voters went to the polls today to elect a mayor, sheriff, police judges, supervisors and district attorney.
Mayor James Roiph, Jr., was a heavy favorite to be returned to the mayor's chair, and odds of 6 to 1 were being offered that District Attorney Matthew Brady will be re-elected.
FALKIRK IS WET
EDINBURGH, Nov. 6.—Falkirk, the first Scottish town to vote on local option, has voted down prohibition, according to official returns today.
Nineteen other areas are voting on the issue.
