LLOYD GEORGE VISIT IS VERY IMPORTANT With the departure of Mr. Lloyd George for home, the American people will begin to assess the results of this memorable coming of Britain's great political figure. The fruits of this pilgrimage will not be fully known and realized until later. That the coming of Mr. Lloyd George will have effect in binding America pore closely to Britain, there is no gainsaying. That the cause of international peace is being fostered, is generally conceded. That the United States is impelled to help Europe, in reasonable, non-entangling way and measure, to get out of its economic quagmires, and that this has been induced, largely, by Mr. Lloyd George's eloquent pleas, well may be admitted. It has been a pleasure to Americans to see and to hear Mr. Lloyd George and to appraise him, face to face. Americans have been delighted to have this illustrious visitor. And Mr. Lloyd George has expressed his keen delight in being in this country. California would accomplish a very creditable and distinguished thing by taking the lead of all the states in abolishing grade crossings. This would be a real work of life-saving. U. S. A. HAS CONFIDENCE OF THE WORLD The United States has the confidence of Europe and the world. Anon come reports from abroad that this Nation is cordially hated overseas. The term "hated" perhaps is too strong, although it may be admitted that this country has not been held in cordial esteem in some quarters. But, in general, America is respected. Particularly is its disinterested attitude toward foreign nations and foreign affairs held in high esteem abroad. Even those countries which have tried most persistently to induce this country to interest itself U. S. Even those countries which have tried most persistently to induce this country to interest itself directly in foreign difficulties must secretly respect the United States for holding itself free from "entangling alliances" of a political nature. Because it is free from all foreign political alliances; because it is the friend of every well-disposed nation and people, the United States wields influence abroad. This influence, it is to be hoped, will be exerted usefully and beneficially to Europe and the world in the forthcoming conference on German reparations. The United States will enter that conference free from prejudice and free from selfish motives. This country is seeking no reparations for itself. It is not in quest of selfish advantage. It desires peace throughout the world. It desires economic stability and prosperity in Europe. It has consented to sit in a conference to try to remove the barriers so that Europe may rehabilitate itself in peace. Foreign trade of the United States for the month of September showed great increase over the corresponding month last year. Both in imports and exports gains were shown. Which is proof that the world's economic structure has not gone to pieces, by any means. Political conjecture at this time, is the flimsiest guessing. Truth is, the national contest, next year, is in the realm of uncertainty in many ways. As to platform issues and Presidential candidates there is nothing assured. There is ground for optimism in general economic conditions in this country. The national budget system should be protected against its insidious enemies. If the budget law needs to be remedied as to actual defects, well and good. But the system itself should not be destroyed or crippled. The huge volume of building which is progressing all over the country, is adding to the prosperity which is prevalent. It puts immense sums into circulation, and this is widely distributed among varying interests. A Canadian became one of the great statesmen of Great Britain and rose to the position next to the throne—to the position which, in reality, is greater than the royal throne itself. The career of Andrew Bonar Law reads like romance. Bean Straw LIMA AND BLACKEYE Prompt Delivery—Prices Reasonable Bean Straw LIMA AND BLACKEYE Prompt Delivery—Prices Reasonable C. H. He was a subdued little chap, faithful and quiet. Finally, however, he plucked up courage to ask for an increase. "How much more would you like?" inquired his employer. "Well," answered Tommy, "I don't think that three dollars a week more would be too much." "You are rather a small boy to be earning eight dollars a week." "I suppose I am," said Tommy, "I know I am small for my age, but to tell the truth, since I've been working here I've been so busy I haven't had time to grow." COMMENTS OF THE PRESS WHAT EDITORS ARE SAYING LEARN TO SHIFT YOUR GEARS (San Francisco Journal) The automobile is a cold mechanism with three speeds or gears. The mind is a living, growing, directing mechanism with an infinitude of gears and speed. The driver of a motor car has three options in any given emergency. He must overcome hills, detours, rough roads, traffic with these three gears or find himself stalled. The driver that sits within the brain has a multitude of courses in any given instance. To meet with the steep hills of trouble, the rough going of adversity, the traffic of competition, the long climb of success, he need not stall the human machine as long as he knows the secret of going from gear to gear until the fight is won. Except a man change his mind gears, his point of view, his sympathies and approach to life, he cannot grasp the new and wonderful things that are happening for his own good. The body is constantly wearing out and renewing itself for its own good. So the world we live in changes and is renewed for its own healing. Unless the mind changes with this changing process there is trouble. Some people always seem to run in low. They are morose, morbid, troubled and pursued by doubt. Others always seem to be running on high. They are nervous, restless, heedless, highstrung. They wear themselves out in middle life. Learn to shift your mental gears and live at various speeds as the needs of the hour demand. The one-gear car would be a handicap in modern traffic. The one-speed mind is and always has been a handicap. ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT HOW A MERE EDITOR SIZE IT UP "What's the matter with America these days?" Too many diamonds, not enough alarm clocks. A SLICE OF LIFE A friend of mine, Who is quite a Raeonteur, Told me This one; A friend of his Was motoring out On Long Island. In a secluded section He ran out Of gas, No garages near. He nailed a few Cars But they did Not stop. Finally, a big Covered truck came Along. He stopped it. A man jumped off The truck. Grabbed the fellow's hand. And jumped back On the truck And away. The stalled motorist Opened his hand And in it was Five hundred dollars! Can you beat it? I can't. The janitor of our apartment is not at all up-stage. In fact, he is quite democratic and does not often impress us with the fact of his social and financial superiority. He has taken us out riding several times in his auto and has introduced us to some of his friends. Yesterday he did us the greatest kindness we have received in many years. He showed us his new winter overcoat and whispered to us confidentially that he could tell us where we could get one exactly like it for $345. Really, some janitors have hearts. We believe they have been slanted for years. THE NEWSPAPER POET COURTS THE MUSE Let's see, we must grind out a verse That's full of sentiment, yet terse, On love — love — "shove"? Oh good gosh, no! Ah—"stars above"—that ought to go. "Love—stars above"—that fits in fine. Now what's to do for the next line? A girl's name—Mary—Edith — Floy "Coy," "joy"—ah, baby, atta boy! It's coming—now what next to say? (Must get to see the Giants play.) "My darling"—no, takes too much time To coin polysyllable rhyme. "My dear"—that's not so awful hot, But easy—that's five lines—now what? Dear, "Clear" of course, and then "your eyes" (Must get eyes in.) Ah—"azure skies." Six—seven—eight—got 'em all in. Now—umm—ah—er—where to begin? Lass, may I tell thee of my love That shines for thee (or is it thou) like stars above? My Mary (no, darn it) My Floy, my beauteous, charming Floy. One look from you is heaven's joy. (That went all right.) My dear, my very only dear. Your gaze, so cool, serene and clear. From out those lustrous, beautiful eyes (oh, man!) For clearer (no, used clear before) Far fairer they than azure skies. Hm! Pretty rotten, still it might Get by. Let's quit. Call it a night. England might now send over her champ checker player and try us out. A pastor tells us that salvation is free. He probably says that of salvation because it cannot be said of anything else.
