Miscellaneous FOREMOST HUMAN INTEREST PICTURE The Gene Stratton Porter production, "Michael O'Halloran," offered at the United Theatre, is a screen version of Mrs. Porter's novel of the same name. It might well be said that "Michael O'Halloran" is one of the foremost human interest pictureizations of the year. True Boardman, who has the role of "Mickey", the fascinating little newsie, is the new boy star of the picture—his clever interpretation of this important and unusual character, although as we understand it is his first starring vehicle, has done much to bring film fame within his grasp. The direction of the picture is superb and, for even those who have read the book there is a different visualization that only the camera can find. It is the story of a little newsboy who adopts a crippled girl, cares for her tenderly, and is instrumental in ridding her of her affliction. Woven into this is the heavier theme of a society couple. The wife, a social butterfly, nursing her children, the father's time taken up with business cares and the heart-breaking tragedy which finally leads to a retouche-laten. A very capable cast was pre-printed in support of Leandman, Ethelyn Irving, his seven-year-old leading lady, who plays the part of the crippled girl, has clearly brought out the part of "Panches." The balance of the great cast includes such well-known people as Irene Rich, Claire McDowell and Charles Clary. ELIMINATE SPEED TRAPS; FINES OFF Fines imposed by Justice J. B. Cox for traffic law offences during October, were reduced by 90 per cent, the judge declared today. The exact total had not yet been compiled, but amounted to approximately $265. This source of revenue has passed the $3000 mark in a single month and had been averaging around $2500. The abolition of speed traps, whereby the State Traffic Officers formerly the county motorcycle officers, could not detect speeders except with difficulty, is mainly responsible. It used to be a common thing to have two or three score of new complaints prepared after each week end. FULLERTON SHIPS 28 CARS TOMATOES Twenty-eight cars of tomatoes, including one mixed car; 26 cars of oranges, and 14 cars of walnuts were shipped from Fullerton last week. The orange shipments were headed by the Placentia Orange Growers Ass'n, which moved 23 cars. American Fruit Growers, Inc., shipped three cars, closing the Valencia season. Placentia Orange Growers' Ass'n expects to close next week. Osborne Fruit and Vegetable Co. reported the shipment of eight*cars of tomatoes, and four lettuce. W. M. Cobb Co. shipped six cars of tomatoes and Orange-co. Produce Growers' Ass'n, six cars. American Fruit Growers' Ass'n reported shipment of eight cars of tomatoes, including one mixed car. What happens when two preachers driving auto crash head-on? A merry Alfonso-Gaston act, of course, both assuming the blame. Rev. J. C. Burns of Shipman, Ill., and Rev. J. H. Belk, missionary of the East St. Louis Baptist assn., now conducting revival meetings at Dupo, Ill., crashed head-on in their cars here. "It was all my fault," declared one of the ministers. "On the contrary, it was all my fault," responded the other clergyman. A very capable cast was presented in support of Leaidman, Ethelyn Irving, his seven-year-old leading lady, who plays the part of the crippled girl, has clearly brought out the part of "Peaches." The balance of the great cast includes such well known people as Irene Rich, Claire McDowell and Charles Clary. There is also one of the funny Monte Banks comedies, "Please Arrest Me," being snowed. The same program will be shown again tonight and tomorrow. There was also an extra added treat for the Sunday matinee and night patroe. The Louis Sullivan of vaudeville's daintest little singing and dancing act, which was one of the best it has been, our good fortune to see in a long time. FILM STAR FREED LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5—Rosy Margaret Gibson, known in the films as Patricia Palmer, was free today on $1500 bail following her arrest yesterday by federal authorities for alleged extortion of money from George Lasher, under threat of federal prosecution. As Miss Gibson was released today it was declared that her only relations with Don Osborn, convicted in Ohio of blackmailing John L. Bushnell, Springfield, Ohio banker, had to do with the renting of a house to him. The federal officers stated, however, that Miss Gibson was introduced to Lasher by Osborn, and that the convicted blackmailer later advised the alleged victim to make a settlement with the girl. Miss Gibson accepted her arrest with startling calmness, the officers said, but emphatically denied that she had threatened to "expose" Lasher unless he provided her with funds. HOLIDAY RATES ON SANTA FE RY. Tickets for the holiday season will be put on sale at a reduction of one-fourth fare between California points, A. C. Walker, local Santa Fe agent, announced today. Reduced tickets for the Thanksgiving season are to be on sale Nov. 23, 29, good for return until Dec. 4, and for the other holiday seasons as early as Dec. 22, and as late as Jan. 1, good for final return until Jan. 2, he said. CLAIRSVILLE, O., Nov. 5—Price of funerals in the United States will not be boosted, despite the recent Japanese earthquakes, although materials used by funeral directors have advanced because of the quakes, according to Paris H. Johnston, local undertaker. Prices of slike advanced 5 per cent after the quakes, Johnston said. Thousands of yards of silks are used in making interiors for caskets. The ravages of the boll weevil in Southern cotton fields also affected the price of plush and broadcloth, used on casket coverings, he said. A number of the big casket companies, however, have announced that there will be no increase in the prices charged undertakers for caskets. The average funeral, with the best of materials and complete service, including autos, etc., will continue to cost from $150 to $300, Johnston said. FATTY COMES BACK LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5—Precoe (Patty) Arunckle, will re-enter the local film industry next week by directing his own company on the Buster Keaton lot in the making of two-reel comedies, which will be released thru his own organization at regular intervals, according to a statement made by the comedian today. Arbuckle was silent on all questions appertaining to the suit for divorce which was brot against him a few days ago by his wife. Americans consume 15,000,000 bananas daily. Yes, we have no remarks to offer—Gary Post-Tribune. EAST ST. LOUIS, Nov. 5—What happens when two preachers driving auto crash head-on? A merry Alfonso-Gaston act, of course, both assuming the blame. Rev. J. C. Burns of Shipman, Ill., and Rev. J. H. Bell missionary of the East St. Louis Baptist assn., now conducting revival meetings at Dupo, Ill., crashed head-on in their cars here. "It was all my fault," declared one of the ministers. "On the contrary, it was all my fault," responded the other clergyman. Then both gospel messengers pitched in to repair the damage to their buses. They were able to drive them home. "Glad to have met you, sir," said the Rev. Mr. Burns as he started off. "The pleasure was all mine," declared Rev. Mr. Bell. RECEIPTS ADVANCE IN CLERK'S OFFICE Breaking all previous records, receipts of County Clerk Joe Backs' office during October amounted to $3587, an increase of 130 per cent over October a year ago. The total then was $1559.75. Fees of all kinds have been multiplying and growing in amount, including marriage license fees, civil and probate case fees, etc. In September the best month previous, fees aggregated $2352.25. WALNUTS STOLEN Mrs. H. C. Downs of Corritoave., recently lost eight sacks of walnuts from her barn, according to a report to Ed Marion, constable. Marion found tracks leading from the place and searched the house of a suspect but did not find the walnuts. He said they had probably been sold already.
