Saturday, November 3, 1923 FORD NOW MAKES OWN COPPER WIRE DETROIT, Nov. 3. — Because outside manufacturers failed to meet specifications for wire used in winding armatures of starter generators used on Ford cars, the Ford Motor Co. has itself gone into the wire manufacturing business. This new industry at the Highland park plant, though not yet in full production, is at present turning out every day some 70 miles of fine insulated copper wire. The making of 6500 generator units daily calls for the absolute standardization of parts, particularly wire size. If the wire winding on the armatures is slightly off size, or if the insulating cover is a bit thick or irregular, either the winding will not fit in the armature segments or lower generator efficiency will result. So, with outside wire not giving full satisfaction, the company determined to make its own, and improvements and simplification of standard wire making machinery have placed this plant ahead of almost any others in quality and economy. One interesting drawing operation is where the wire passes through eight diamonds, each reducing the size a few thousandths of an inch. The cost of each diamond may run as high as $200 and it takes several days of continuous drilling with diamond dust in order to pierce one. They can be used about six months without appreciable wear. Cotton, used for the wire covering, is also made by the company, and is spun from cotton imported from England. The new wire, which in every way meets the high standards of Ford manufacture, has brought a general improvement in the production of starter generators. ILLEGAL LENSES BEING CORRECTED Auto dealers in certain makes of car are responding well to the Underwriters Watch Four-Wheel Brakes The distributor of two well-known cars which do not possess four-wheel brakes calls attention to this article which appeared in the Chicago Journal of Commerce of Oct. 15 last: The question of four-wheel brakes on automobiles has become an absorbing problem with automobile insurance men, due to the fact that one or two companies writing this class of business are now granting a credit from the collision premium when such appliance is installed on an automobile. Notwithstanding this action on the part of these companies it appears that the actuarial and forms committee of the National Automobile Underwriters' Conference have given due consideration to the question, and find that there is a considerable hazard developed as the result of the use of such brakes. In a report on the question, it is stated: "We have seen tests of the '4-wheel brake' at the factories and these brakes do accomplish a reduction in speed and stop where necessary in shorter space than the commonly used rear-wheel brakes. But the appliance is yet only in the development stage, and the extent to which collision losses will be reduced is a subject for speculation only. As a matter of fact, automobile engineers are unwilling to predict what is to come about through their use and two of the more important manufacturers now using them have entirely opposite views on the safest form to use, one adopting an inner expanding type and the other an outer contracting type, and each one can point out defects in the other system. "It seems quite likely that having a reliance on a greater brake control, drivers will risk more speed; and it is certain that there will be more rear-end collisions. In Chicago, within a week, four cars drove into another simply because the first in line applied his four-wheel brakes so suddenly that those behind were unable to imitate him." ING LENSES BEING CORRECTED Auto dealers in certain makes of car are responding well to the reminders sent them regarding the illegality of having sold cars since Sept. 1, bearing illegal lenses, according to Inspector G. T. Gilroy of the state division of motor vehicles. There aren't many cars of the four makes involved that have been purchased since that date in the county, according to Gilroy. Transmission Lock Protects Durants Owners of all Durant four-cylinder cars, thanks to the new transmission lock with which they are now equipped, are assured of positive protection against theft. The new locking device has been coming through on Durant models received from the plant during the past two weeks, and will continue to be regular equipment, it is understood. That the lock is the last word in protection against theft will be readily admitted when it is understood that it has been given a Class A rating by the underwriters' laboratories in which it has been tested. This means that the owners of Durant cars equipped with this device secure the lowest premium rate for insurance against theft. With this transmission lock it is impossible to shift the gears from neutral and it is impossible to lock the car unless the shifting lever is in neutral position. Wm. R. CLOSED CAR WAS NEVER SO POPULAR (Continued from page one) the science of the engineer; it requires the blending of many different elements. The proportions of the body must be harmonized with the proportions of the chassis; beauty must be gained at no expense to roominess. Strength must be attained and yet weight and bulk must be held to a safe minimum. With an immense body plant in Milwaukee devoted to the exclusive production of Nash bodies, The Nash Motors Co. occupies a position unique in the industry. This great plant is one of the most modernly equipped enclosed body factories in the world. The Pauley Oil Co., distributor for the O'Donnell-Gillette Refining Co., is one of the strongest independent concerns in the fleet today. All gasoline, kerosene and distillate sold under the name Eureka have an absolute guarantee that they will always conform to the U.S. government specifications regarding such products. All of the crude oil used in manufacturing these Eureka products is the best quality obtained in California, namely, Santa Fe Spring 30-35 degree gravity crude oil. The refinery of the company making Eureka products is located in West Whittier, and has been in operation for over a year. It has a capacity of running 600 barrels of crude oil per day, and immediate plans for expansion have been formulated. The company owns no service stations their own, pursuing a policy of marketing through the local independent service station man only. Jensen. To tune for amateurs, put the variable condenser at maximum capacity, 100 on the scale, place the switch on the left hand tap making sure that the filament or vacuum tube has been adjusted to a point just below where hissing and noises begin, says Jensen. Now adjust the variable condenser dial until signals are heard louder. The middle tap on the switch is designed to receive wave length up to 400 meters, and is therefore the correct one to use with the average radio broadcasting. The last tap, that is, the one on the right, is used for the reception of commercial stations and radiophone stations having longer waves. This is one of the most popular single-tube sets on the market, its popularity being due to its many attractive features. Stations up to 1500 miles away are heard by owners. One and once half volt tubes may be used, these eliminating the necessity of buying a more expensive storage "A" battery. The trade name "Crosley" is used by permission of the Crosley Manufacturing Co. THE NEW STAR CAR (Continued From Page One) The spark and gas control, at the wheel, is of sector type. The instrument board, which is curved, is mounted with dashlight and nickel-trimmed instruments. Wider and better-trimmed running board, Crown fenders, drum headlights and front spring bumper, all do their part in producing a car of refined and graceful appearance. In commenting on the new line, President Sullivan said: "The country will adopt this car as promptly and as enthusiastically as it did a year ago, the first Star car. There is combined in the new models every mechanical feature of the other line, the chassis which made an unprecedented name for itself, and has established records for economy and endurance at which all cars RECORD CROWD FOR SHOW FORECAST LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3.—The 11th annual Los Angeles Auto Show is only a week away, and motor car dealers are predicting a record-breaking attendance for the event. The 1923 automotive celebration promises to stand out above any of the previous shows from the point of decoration, scenic artists declare. They have selected three color schemes—flame, turquoise and goldenhrod—as the motifs for the several tents. Show officials point out that working from these basic tones the decorators will present something of simple beauty that will set off the different models and "special jobs" to the greatest extent. Distributors also point to the fact that the coming event, Nov. 10-18, will draw several hundred visitors, who are themselves members of the automotive fraternity, sub-dealers and other men who are specifically interested in the distribution of cars, trucks and accessories. Veteran motor car men state that this year all attendance records will be broken. In 1922, the gate rolled round the 100,000 mark. However, this year's show takes on an added importance due to the number of new models that will be seen under the three tents at Prager park for the first time. The national importance of the Los Angeles Auto Show so far as the manufacturers is concerned. Burt Roberts, secretary of the Los Angeles Motor Car Dealers' Assn., and manager of the show, points out can be realized from the fact that this is the first time in history of the motor car industry that the premier announcement of the latest automotive creations will be made west of New York. In the past the New York Auto Show was the leader over all others. But one change has been made by Manager Roberts. Last year those present remember how the music was furnished by one centrally located band and was wire-lessed through the tents by loud speakers. This year, at an additional expense, bach tent is to have its own band. The musical program that is being arranged will include the headlights and front spring bumper, all do their part in producing a car of refined and graceful appearance. In commenting on the new line, President Sullivan said: "The country will adopt this car as promptly and as enthusiastically as it did a year ago, the first Star car. There is combined in the new models every mechanical feature of the other line, the chassis which made an unprecedented name for itself, and has established records for economy and endurance at which all car owners marvel. The new beauty crowns the firm first foundation. "There has never been as great an interest displayed in the first appearance of any car as was demonstrated when Durant made the original showing of the Star car. Twenty-seven thousand people examined it the first day in New York, and on the Pacific coast the reception was equally cordial. "I look to see those records swamped by the attention which our new line will attract. Even though no previous news was published in regard to it, many inquiries have been coming to us, as to whether we would have any change of models. Sales should, and will, take an immediate lean forward." LOCAL PASTOR IN ALL SAINTS PULPIT Rev. A. G. H. Bode has returned home after passing several days in San Diego. Mr. Bode took part in the parish feast observed in All Saints Episcopal church on All Saints day, being the chief speaker of the day. On the afternoon of Wednesday he conducted the meeting of women, known as the "quiet day," and at night addressed a body of men at a smoker. Dodge Car Is Ever-Dependable With every year that passes," says a local Dodge fan, "I become more convinced than ever that for all year round service at small initial cost and cheap upkeep the Dodge has no rival. There are perhaps better looking cars than the Dodge, but few if any so substantial. "Every summer and fall I read dozens of newspaper articles regarding the performance of the Dodge in the mountains and over the roughest kind of roads, with the repair bill at the end of the trip little or nothing, and the gas and oil mileage at their absolute minimum. The best material and workmanship possible go into Dodge cars. I know it from my own experience as well as that of others—and you always know that the Dodge will stand up." Commercial cars equipped with solid tires will be charged additional weight fee. In order that a minimum of demand and difficulty may be experienced by auto owners, the Auto Club suggests the following precautions: The 1923 certificate of registration which serves as the application for 1924 license, must explain legible." If the certificate is now illegible in that the state license number or the engine number is not readily readable, it will be necessary to make application for a new certificate, and if this is done, now it will save considerable time and inconvenience at renewal period." If the address as now shown on the certificate is incorrect, it should be crossed out and the address written in ink." If the certificate of registration shows some other party as real owner and if the legal claim has been satisfied, his signature must be secured on the second line on the back of the certificate." "In case the registered owner is now deceased and the automobile has been left to beneficiaries, a transfer should now be made into beneficiary's name." "If your 1923 certificate has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you should make immediate for a new one. The charge for securing such duplicate certificate is 50c." COMING!
