GENERAL MOTORS SALES MOUNTING Embracing in its output motor cars of every type covering every price class, the General Motors Corp. occupies a conspicuous position in America's automobile manufacturing industry, says Los Angeles authority. Three of its makes—Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac—ranked first, second and sixth in the drawing for spaces for the national shows, whose order of choice is based on total value production. Buick headed the list for the fifth consecutive year, and in 1923 Chevrolet passed Studebaker, and Dodge into second place. How well this giant corporation has succeeded in meeting the motoring needs of every class of automobile users is well illustrated by the magnitude of its sales and the great increases in purchases of its products in California, which consumes 10 per cent of all the automobiles built in America and bids fair to be revealed as the largest user of automobiles in the United States when the 1923 registration figures are made public. How extensive has been the buying of its cars and how predominant is the position the G.M.C. occupies this year in the Golden State may be judged from the fact that during the first nine months of 1923 it sold nearly one-half of all the new passenger cars bought in California, exclusive of Fords. To be exact the percentage was 48, resulting from G.M.C. sales having been 45,807 of the total of 94,133 sold in the state outside of Fords. The aggregate gain made by Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Oakland and Oldsmobile as compared with the first nine months of 1923 was 17,318 sales, or 60 per cent. In northern California there were 20,984 sales as against 11,929, a gain of 8464, or 71 per cent over last year. RIGHT OF WAY DRIVE STARTED Drivers who don't get off the right of way when they hear the siren of county or city police or fire officers, will do more than get themselves disliked hereafter. Inspector G.T. Gilroy told the automobile editor yesterday that a campaign now was being started all over the state with the aid of the state traffic officers, to compel autoists to give the police and firemen room when they approach. The officers never use the siren unless they have to, and they alone are permitted to use it. ALL-YEAR DEMAND KEEPS CARS CHEAP Reports from all over the country show that retail sales of Studebaker cars for the year to date have beaten all previous records," says Harry D. Riley, the Studebaker dealer. Several factors have contributed to this record-breaking demand for Studebaker cars. The first undoubtedly is the ever-growing appreciation of the automobile as the indispensable necessity it is in the life of today. Then the increased percentage of closed car production has emphasized the demand. The so-called seasonal demand is a thing of the past. Today we have an all-year demand—in the winter as well as the spring, summer and fall—in the last six months of the year, as well as the first six months. And the public benefits from this in a way it may not perhaps appreciate. Speaking for Studebaker, for instance, I may say that a steady, consistent demand for our product permits of greater manufacturing economies than a sharply fluctuating demand would, and the public gets the benefit of JENSEN TAKES ONE GOULD BATTERY Rober V. The aggregate gain made by Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Oakland and Oldsmobile as compared with the first nine months of 1922 was 17,318 sales, or 60 per cent. In northern California there were 20,984 sales as against 11,920, a gain of 8464, or 71 per cent over last year. Southern California's gain was 3185 or 56 per cent from 25,318 sales, as compared with 11,920 last year. The introduction by the General Motors Corp. of its new four-wheel brakes, 1924 models, met with so prompt a response from the public that its sales in September showed an increase of 15 per cent over August, despite the fact that buying new passenger cars in California that month fell off 5 per cent. September G. M. C. sales were 6170, a gain of 703 over the preceding month. Gain over the corresponding month of 1922 was 1506 sales, or 41 per cent. In launching California business men with commercial vehicles general Motors predominated. For the first nine months of this year it headed the list with sales of G. M. C. Buick and Oldsmobile trucks aggregating 810, as compared with 793 and 679 by its nearest competitor. In addition to trucks, 1135 Chevrolet light delivery cars were also sold. Riley Shop Enlarged Here For Fifth Time For the fifth time in a little over four years, the Harry D. Riley garage here being enlarged. This time a space with a frontage of 55 feet on the alley running east and west behind the Chestnut street wing and 75 feet deep is being added. A modern one-story brick structure with loads of light from above and sides is being erected. Riley figures that his total floor space will amount to 25,000 square feet, the largest total in the county. The local shop was opened Aug. 8, 1919. Today we have an all-year demand—in the winter as well as the spring, summer and fall—in the last six months of the year, as well as the first six months. And the public benefits from this in a way it may not perhaps appreciate. Speaking for Studebaker, for instance, I may say that a steady, consistent demand for our product permits of greater manufacturing economies than a sharply fluctuating demand would, and the public gets the benefit of greater dollar-for-dollar values. One of the greatest advantages we have is the fact that with the Studebaker line we do not have to lose sales because of not having the type of car the buyer wants. The complete line is an advantage in any business. The piano dealer, for instance, knows he is wasting his time trying to sell a customer an upright when that customer wants a baby grand. The piano man carries both kinds, and player-pianos besides. So it is with us. With 13 body types on the Light Six, Special Six and Big Six chassis, we have a range and variety of models, open and enclosed, to fit every taste and purse, and this is an advantage, not only in selling a man his first car, but in selling him his second, third, fourth and fifth and keeping him continuously a Studebaker owner. L. A. TRAFFIC HEAD LAUDS NEW BRAKES When the captain in charge of the traffic division of the police department of a great city commends four-wheel brakes, there must be something in the new invention, says Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co. Capt James McDowell, who occupies such a position in Los Angeles, says in a letter to the Howard Automobile Co., distributors: "After riding in your new 1924 Buick car equipped with four-wheel brakes, and your request for my opinion as to the use of four-wheel brakes in heavy traffic and for emergency stops, I would state as follows: First. I am in favor of anything that has a tendency to safety. I am satisfied the car equipped with four-wheel brakes has the advantage over the car with two-wheel brakes to such an extent that a car can be stopped in half the distance that is required to stop with two-wheel brakes with the same amount of pressure on the bands, and on wet streets you have more control and more confidence in avoiding accidents, as there is less danger of skidding." Jimmy Murphy has a very slim chance of winning the championship. Even though he should annex first money at Beverly Hills, Hearne will have to come in fourth or worse to be successful out of titular honors. If he takes third he will be just 52 points ahead of the popular Murphy provided James Anthony wins. Murphy's only chance to win the championship is to finish first. Even though he comes in second and Hearne does not complete the entire grind, "Grandpa" Niddle will be the champ. Plain Dealer Ads Always Bring Results RADIO The Best! "I would like to see all cars adopt the four-wheel brake as part of their regular equipment. In my opinion, good brakes are very essential on all cars, and there should be established testing stations for brakes the same as headlights." Don't count too much on the common sense of the other fellow. No one is 100 per cent alert all the time. More than 522,000 freight car loads of autos, trucks and parts, excepting tire and chains, were shipped last year. INSEN TAKES ON GOULD BATTERY Robert V. PARA-BELL TIRE ON SALE 3Rd TIME The Reliable Tire Co. is giving away a handsome spare tire cover with each set of four Parabell tires. Count the covers and you'll know how many quartets of tires have been purchased, says Roy Mendoza, proprietor. For the third time, the company now is offering for sale a 32x4 Para-Bell, which has been used for thousands of miles each by two previous private owners. The tire has gone probably 20,000 miles and looks good for 10,000 more, says Mendoza. HUDSON-ESSEX SERVICE IMPROVED The Hudson-Essex shop of R. R. Grove in Anaheim has the cooperation of the Grinnell lathe shop immediately adjoining, unlike practically every other shop in the city, and from now on unequalled service on both machines can be rendered, says J. W. Casto, who leases Grove's repair department. C. P. Bryant is the branch manager in charge. There is a pit in the Hudson-Essex shop for four cars, and all other necessary repair facilities. In the lathe shop, experienced lathe men stand ready to complete the service provided. Casto has had extensive experience on Hudson and Essex cars in Minnesota. Within a short time an A. A. member will be within reach of A. A. A. emergency service on any of the national highways. CHEVROLET OPENS PRIZE CONTEST Here's an opportunity for Chevrolet owners to win a $25 prize. The company wants to get the answers to the questions why owners purchased Chevrolets, why they decided they needed individual transportation, and how they managed to take care of the purchase. For best letter received before Jan. 1, 1924, answering these questions, they will pay $25; for the second best, $15, and for the third best, $10. They will publish the winning letter in the March Review and later some of the other letters which they receive, in the Review with owners' permission, as they believe that owners' experiences will convince others that an automobile does pay for itself, and that it does double your useful life. $1 will be paid for each letter published that does not win one of the prizes. Address letters accompanied whenever possible by a photo of yourself and your car, to the editor of the Chevrolet Review, Chevrolet Motor Co., General Motors bldg., Detroit, Mich. The Star One year ago W.C. Durant, builder of more than a million automobiles, promised to produce the greatest dollar for dollar value ever given in a low priced car. The whole country waited, skeptical—expectant— AND THEN— Durant fulfilled his promise by building the 1923 Star Car. He built, as do all good builders, a firm foundation. He built a chassis that had hitherto been unapproached—a chassis such as, up to that time, had been used only in cars much higher in price. So completely did this car fulfill his promise that 125,000 light car prospects purchased the Star Car in its first year. To give the public this car at its low price, it was necessary to get into volume production immediately, and work concentrated on the chassis.
