Thursday, November 1, 1923 BOWLERS' COMING BACK IN ENGLAND LONDON, Nov. 1.—If you are coming to England this fall and want to be sartorially correct when you stroll through Bond-st., bring along your derby hat and wear it. About 20 years ago King Edward cast the hard felt style of hat into the discard and blossomed forth in a soft hat of the Homburg type. Then ensued a scramble on the part of the followers of masculine fashions to get rid of their "bowlers," as the English call the derby, and to acquire soft felt headpieces. So for nearly 20 years the derby lid has been passe in London. Now the Prince of Wales, who more or less sets the fashion for men's styles in England, and who has a style of hat for every conceivable occasion, has begun to show marked preference for the "bowler." The Duke of York also has been adorning his dome with a derby with increasing frequency. As a result the hatters of London's fashionable West End have laid in a new supply of derbies and have decreed that "the bowler will be worn this autumn." There remains nothing for the devotee of fashion to do but to buy a "bowler" and wear it, whether he likes it or not. Reports from 19 counties show 465,996 acres swept by flames. Crop losses amounted to $1,576,-329.70, and value of improvements destroyed was estimated at $256,633.60. FAMILY CLOCK IS ALSO SAVINGS BANK WEST PALM BEACH, Nov. 1. A family clock which demands at least 5¢ as its daily working wage has made its debut in West Palm Beach. It will not wind unless coins in denominations of 5, 10 or 25 cents are deposited. But this new timepiece is not so cruel after all, as it might seem. At the end of each month its coin box can be unlocked, and the money deposited there during the month will be returned, wita gratifying silence. Thus it serves a double purpose—as a timekeeper and as a money-saver. This coin clock is sold by a local bank. "Economical saving as regular as a clock," is the slogan the financial institution has adopted. A. H. Wagg, president of the bank, vouches for the fact that the clock keeps perfect time so long as it is fed the daily coin. "Rewinding means the saving of at least one coin," he says. "Thus the pocket change so often wasted will build a substantial savings account when used to wind the clock." The instrument has an open face, plain, while the other material is steel. It will hold approximately $25, but there is a place for depositing bills, so that it will take care of as much money as desired. Charlie Chaplin says, "Health is a state of mind, and laughter the best tonic." Making allowances for rhetorical exaggeration, there is much truth therein.—Sacramento Bee. Herr Fellinger. CHORUS GIRLS TO WEAR MORE NEW YORK, Nov. 1.—The 1924 chorus girl will wear more clothes than does the late edition of 1923. Dorothy Bryant, executive president of the Chorus Girls' Equity association, predicted in an interview today. Leave it to the "aristocracy of the chorus" to see to it that the prevailing rage for "nudes" does not last, said Mrs. Bryant. "Parisianize the American stage? Never! she asserted." "Why, the girls themselves—that is, the better class (the 90 per cent)—already are turning thumbs down on the salacious and snappy, the daring decollettes, the beautiful but dumb "nudes." Dramatic critics, now shaking an apprehensive head over the trend in the theater, and reformers, eager to legislate against and censure the stage, needn't worry. Leave it to these girls. "The time is coming—and very soon—when the chorus girl who does the undraped in musical reviews, will automatically be relegated to the realm of burlesque." "Next season, the girls will be asked not so much, how do you look, but what can you do? Beauty is to be supplanted by talent." Mrs. Bryant recalled that when the Amazon type chorus girl made her first appearance about 25 years ago, the country was shocked. The shock wore off, however, and in the last year or two, the tights have given way to talcum powder. DIVERGENT GOALS FOR HURRIED N. Y. NEW YORK, Nov. 1.—Mad Manhattan — pushing, pulling, pummeling, racing to subways, running from the "L's." "Where are you going?" the inquisitive reporter asked. Middle-aged woman—"To buy a nut sundae." Middle-aged man—"Newsstand—get a golf magazine." Old lady—"Tickets for the Winter Garden." Old man—"To get a necktie." Youth with the oiled hair—"Home." Flapper in sleeveless gown—"To call a cop, you fresh thing." Plain Dealer Ads Always Bring "It's really been the small-town man's fault. When in the big city he demands a zippy show—something Main street, the family, or the Woman's club wouldn't stand for. But the chorus girls have had enough," said Mrs. Bryant, "It simply can't last."
