COULD PUT KEY UNDER DOOR MAT
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1.—Who shall be the custodian of the county "cellar?"
The weighty puzzle bothers the board of supervisors after the request of Deputy District Attorney Pitts that the key to the "cellar" be given to Detective George Contreras.
Contreras, who heads the county "dry" squad, has informed Pitts that he has been unable to store liquor confiscated by his men, because the raids are mostly made at night, and when the conficated booth is brought in the "cellar" is locked.
Under previous arrangement, County Clerk L. E. Lampson has been custodian of the "cellar" key. The situation is complicated, however, by the fact that Sheriff Tranger's dry squad also uses the "cellar" to store liquor taken in raids.
Supervisor Bean is of the opinion that the key should be in the hands of some person other than the head of the sheriff's dry squad or any member of the district attorney's office.

WISE OLD BEAR OUTWITS FARMER
PORTERVILLE, Nov. 1. — A big bear which straddles steel traps and knocks quarters of beef from the limbs of trees in order to indulge its appetite, is being hunted by residents of the Milo section.
George Wray killed a beef last week and hung the careass in four quarters on a tree, as is the mountain custom. The next morning the farmer found one-quarter eaten and the other pieces clawed to the ground.
A big steel-jawed trap then was placed in position and other quarters of beef hung directly over it. When Wray arrived the next morning, he found that the beast had straddled the trap with his hind legs and used his fore legs to pull down the beef.
