CONNECTICUT BOASTS LOW CRASH RATE
HARTFORD, Nov. 1.—Railroad trains and autos came together in 26 collisions in Connecticut in the first seven months of the year, the state motor vehicle department announces, killing 5 and injuring 17. Connecticut is lucky, the department believes, for the state his one-eightieth of all the autos of the country, and if it had one-eightieth of all the crossing fatalities—which total 1820 throughout the land each 12 months—the list here would have been 14 deaths in the seven months.
The 1923 record is 23 motor vehicles hit by trains and 13 trains hit by motor vehicles, while the 1922 record was 22 machines hit by trains and seven hit by machines.
MINERS APPROVE ARMY EQUIPMENT
WASHINGTON, Nov. 1.—The old "tin hat" which served the Yanks so well in France as a head protector, has become a necessary part of the miners' equipment, the department of the interior has announced.
Before the advent of the tin hat miners used stiff resined felt hats which were exceedingly hot and uncomfortable. Now, owing to the helmets, the former have become obsolete.
Trench shoes also have become very popular in mining centers, the department states. Their durability and thickness affords the miner a cheap shoe and excellent protection for his feet.

RAILWAYS TO QUIT
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 1—
The fact that every farmer along the lines of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Street Railway Co. owns an automobile is given as one of the reasons for the abandonment of that enterprise by Gaylord Thompson, its president. The abandonment was recently approved by the Pennsylvania public service commission after it was shown that during 1922 the trolley road, which connects Bristol and Doylestown, in Buck county, lost $25,000.
The line was originally built 30 years ago at an estimated cost of $250,000. It is 26 miles long. Today it is valued at less than $10,000.
CONKLIN LOSES GRIP
S. S. Conklin, business manager of the Long Beach Telegram and formerly of the Santa Ana News, has written Sheriff Sam Jernigan, asking his aid in recovering a leather covered grip containing valuables, including a pair of cuff links made from gold colons which he prizes as he looms. The grip fell off his car near Tustin.

SEEK AUTO DRIVER
CHICAGO, Nov. 1—A man hunt was under way in Chicago's south side today for the driver of the large touring car which fled after striking down a mother and her little daughter as they attempted to cross the street after alighting from a street car.
Mrs. Anna Joyce, 28, and Dorothy, 8, were dying according to physicians at Washington hospital. The mother has a fractured skull and the little girl a fractured skull and fractures of both legs.
The car, a large and expensive touring car, abandoned by the driver in his flight, is held at police headquarters. It bears Illinois license 3,684, issued to Thomas Willee, vice president of the Wille Dry Kiln and Mill company and also of the T. Willee company.
Willee had not returned home early today.
