$50,000 RACE NO 2-HORSE AFFAIR BY JONATHAN BROOKS (Written for I.N.S.) CINCINNATI, Oct. 30—(INS) Don't get the idea that the $50,000 Latonia championship, to be run November 2, is going to be one of those two horse affairs. Zer, conqueror of Pupyrus, and many other thoribeds of lesser note will start. So will My Own, bitter rival of the Sinclair colt. The race will offer opportunity for a settlement of the argument that has been raging for weeks—viz, which horse has the more foot. But that does not mean it will be a two horse race, by any means. Kentucky is no respecter of other folks horses, even if these horses, like Zer, come from the Blue Grass. Last year, Latonia was all ribbed up for a two horse race between Morvich and Whiskaway, only to see Thilodeaux whi Morvien and collar Whiskaway for a brilliant, if losing battle in the stretch. This year, Kentucky sorts figures on another upset. In Memoriam, handsome bay son of McGee and Eschantress, owned by Carl Weideman, of Newport, is picked to do the upsetting. This colt, fast and a stayer, was touted to win the Kentucky derby last spring, but turned up slightly off edge and fell down on the job. Thru the summer Wedman has had him in the hands of R.J. Gilmore, acknowledged a king pin among trainers. Since Gilmore has had the colt, In Memoriam has won several good races and won them impressively. Two weeks ago he finished second to the imported fire HOT OFF GRID By I.N.S. The Illinois squad seems to be in fine shape and there are not likely to be any changes in the lineup for the Chicago game unless Zuppke discovers a star tackle or two. The Iowa squad is practicing behind locked gates this week and it is rumored they are working up a speed attack. Out of six chances last Saturday Michigan only made one point after touchdown. Willee is giving the Ohio team a there overgoing. The program for this week is straight football and hard work. Rockne's grid machine took a rest yesterday, but will get down to hard work again today. LOCAL BOWLERS GRAB 3 POINTS Roehm-Sylvesters are crowding first place closer as the result of winning four points from the House of Quality in the Mercantile Bowling league on the local alleys last night. Jake Schaefer, former cplain; Roger Conti of France; Edouard Horemans, of Belgium are fancied by the wise men probable successors to the championship. This colt, fast and a stayer, was routed to win the Kentucky derby last spring, but turned up slightly off edge and fell down on the job. Thru the summer Wedman has had him in the hands of R.J. Gilmore, acknowledged a king pin among traineers. Since Gilmore has had the colt, In Memoriam has won several good races and won them impressively. Two weeks ago he finished second to the imported fire year old Chacolet, in the $50,000 Kentucky special. He would have won it if Jockay Barrett had not been so Lusy watching Shuffle Along and Knobble, inside him on the rail, that he could not see Chacolet whining along outside and finishing behind Cherrie, Untidy and other good ones. That race at a mile and three sixteenths was run in 1:56 3-5, which is very tidy time. Since then, Gilmore has been busy nursing In Memoriam along for the race on November 2. Weideman proclaims his McGee colt the best three year old in the land, Zov and My Own especially included. He has offered to wager a large sum his colt can beat the other pair and has refused to sell In Memoriam for any amount of money. Kentucky likes In Memoriam. Kentucky also likes Enchantment, Harry Payne Whitney's soft, of which much was expected at various times this season. It entailed a right at least he should be very much in the running. Kentucky likes them and this race is to be a mile and three quarters which is an awfully long race. It would not be at all surprising since In Memoriam is so well regarded, if Zev turned out to be third choice in the wagering for My Own, despite the fact that he has not raced in these parts, is highly favored. With six games of the 1923 ball schedule of the Pacific Conference passed into his Golden Bears of U. of Opeared today to have their sunk into the title honors. Along with the Univ., of Idaho, and Oregon, the Bears are among the four teams we have not met defeat this season and the Californians seem on the way to another conference victory, altho the Washington Huskies loom as genuine contenders. WALSH I. N. S. Sports Editor NEW YORK, Oct. 30.—Among local sharpshooters who claim the all, know all, the tip is that Willie Hoppe will defeat the end of the present from his throne as world’s platoon biliardist, never again return. Hoppe’s present form, it is conceived, is so unimpressive as to hide all possibility of the invasion winning the internationals 18-2 balk line affair, now progress at the Hotel Penhsylan Schaefer, former champion Roger Conti of France and guard Horemans, of Belgium, anchored by the wise men as able successors to the championship. The others entered Cochrane, of San Fran., is thot to lack the necessities, and Erich Hagenlach of Germany, the necessity to finish at the top. But “Hoppe against the field” position, they will be factors perhaps not altogether minor. Hoppe averaged less than fifty in beating Hagenlacher in opening match last night. He did not get away with that fact any man in the tournaments the German included. In the will have to raise that age by at least ten to dispose of conti and Schaefer. The latter, it is said, is playing the form he showed at Chicago years ago, when he broke down with a sense of supplants and ended Willie’s armageddon. PLAY FIRST AAA CONTEST SUNDAY Final arrangements were made last night for Anaheim’s entry in the Triple A league. Doty Bush presented local moguls at the Swal Baseball Managerw Assn. meeting in Los Angeles last evening. Bill LeVecke and Bush have passed a subscription paper among local fans and businessmen, signing up something like $600. It is desired that the subscriptions reach $1000. It is expected that the first game will be played next Sunday. Callahan will play center. Barnaby, a left-handed pitcher and fielder, will be in right. If Red Smith, who played short for Oakland in the Coast league last summer, can be obtained for the third bag, Jimmy McDowell will play first. The latter made a whale of a success at the initial corner with Wichita in the Western League this summer. He was one of the league’s leading hitters. Jimmy played third with the locals last winter. If Smith does not come, Art Mueller who played with Hanford in the San Joaquin valley league will be signed. Familiar faces will grace the other positions. Buster Callan behind the bat; Pendleton, short; Bush, second, and Herb Salveson in the box. Another pitcher will be signed. It is expected that Barnaby will be poison for the fast Shell Oil team with its string of left-handed batters. The Triple A league will include Anaheim, Wilmington, San Pedro, Glendale, Shell, Sawtelle, Ualon Tool and Hammond Lumber Co. or White King Soap. A number of big leaguers will be seen on the various teams. Because of the delay in getting the Anaheim team started, Irish and Bob Meusel of world’s series fame will play with Glendale. Anaheim will have to play its early games away from home as the high school field is now on. NOTRE DAME MAY RECONSIDER TRIP SOUTH BEND, Oct. 30. — An announcement was made here today that the way had been left open for Knute Jocknec’s fighting Irishmen of Notre Dame to play football in California if a tempting and definite offer were made by Los Angeles. It was indicated that the faculty’s action yesterday in deciding against acceptance of offers was not final. DARTMOUTH WITH EASTERN LEADERS By DAVIS J. WALSH I. N. S. Sports Editor NEW YORK, Oct. 30.—Into each life, they say, a little rain must fall and today a few of our esteemed football teams are all wet. Up at Cambridge, for example, it is neither raining rain nor votes, but large crimson tears over the convincing defeat of Harvard by Dartmouth, the third scored by the latter in 50 years. That game served two purposes, namely, it confirmed the suspicion that Harvard is not what it might be and elevated Dartmouth to the front rank of eastern elevens. Others retaining that status are Yale, Syracuse, Cornell, Pennsylvania State, West Virginia and W. & J. In the middle west and out on the west coast, the situation remained unchanged, although big ten reputations were tarnished. In addition, the south lost several games and much prestige, Center College and Georgia being badly worsted by Pennsylvania and Notre Dame, respectively. California, however, maintained its domination over the coast situation by beating Washington State while Stanford was finishing second to U. S. C. Notre Dame, Michigan, Illinois, Chicago and Wisconsin remained at the top of the heap in the middle west, the first three nams... HARS MAY GRAB ANTHER VICTORY N. No communique was issued. It was learned at the foreign office that Great Britain is proceeding with conference negotiations, attempting to get France to consent to broader terms than Premier Polincare outlined in his speech last Sunday. British officials fear that the conference will not be able to make much headway toward a final settlement if it is restricted by France.
