DAY NEW YORK, Oct. 23.—Thomas Edison, the electrical wizard, declared in an interview this afternoon that new inventions some day might make the four-hour day an actuality. He said he questioned whether such a condition would be a good thing for the people. "The time is coming," Edison said, "when full automatic machinery will be so common that the four-hour workday will be possible." Edison feared it would induce idleness. Asked if he believed as much progress would be made in electrical development in the next decade as has been made in the past, Edison said: "Indeed so—seemingly there is no end to the development and the progress of electrical equipment." He praised Herbert Hoover, secretary of commerce, and Henry Ford; Hoover because of his water power program and Ford for his business accomplishments. "Mr. Hoover," said Edison, "is one of the few men in the country who has a dead level head. What ever he says you can rely on." Asked what he thought of Ford for President, Edison said: "I would hate to see Ford president, as it would spoil a good man. He is more valuable where he is." Edison said it required seven to forty years to "put an idea over on the public." He said this when he was asked whether he thought conversion of coal into power at the mine was coming. He said he believed it would come, but he could not predict how soon. "I have been advocating this for 40 years," he said.
