HIGH SCHOOL GIRL GIVEN SURPRISE BY JOLLY CROWD MISS VIDA SUTHERLAND, popular high school girl was complimented last evening on her birthday when a jolly crowd of her school friends dropped in to surprise her. The young honoree was busily engaged with her studies and was more than surprised. She was the recipient of many lovely presents. Games were played during the evening and dancing alley was a delightful feature. Ice cream, cake and punch were provided by the self-invited guests. The jolly affair was held at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Poore, 252 So. Los Angeles. Taking part in the jolly affair were Missen Mary Jane and Modesta Van Hooven, Thelma Sanchez, Velda Dunham, Lois Dunham, Fivelyn Magatham, Imogene Saunders, Lucille Hatfield, Francis Murch, Virginia Noll, Marion Downs, Messrs Jesus Orchon, Jerome Giss, Britts Price, Laurence Ennis, Clelen Alsip, Laurence Mitchell, William Ward, Jack Hensley, Jimmy Fitzgibbons, Jack Mattis, Walter Blakely. Expression Class Recital Mrs. Faye Kern Schulz, expression teacher at Anaheim High school presented her first class pupils in a recital in her room Wednesday. This is the first of a series planned by Mrs. Schulz. Guess included many of the southern faculty members and Congenial Crowd Plays Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Clark were host and hostess last evening to a dozen friends. The evening hours were pleasantly passed playing five hundred. H. C. Ruick and Mrs. Adolph Rimpau made high scores and received appropriate prizes. Low scores were made by Frank Geiser and Mrs. E. P. Fergus. A merry hour with conversation followed while the daffty luncheon was served. Attractive fall flowers were placed about the rooms. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clark included Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Ruick, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gieser, Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Durkee, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Fergus, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Randall, Mrs. Adolph Kimpau and Dr. Hargrave. Mrs. Durkee was given a picture in celebration of her birthday anniversary which occurred Tuesday. Club Plans-Party Final plans for the Halloween party to be given by the Chat 'En Seau club were made last evening at the regular meeting at the home of Mrs. Fred Scott on Carleton ave. The party will be held at Paper's half-Tuesday evening, Oct. 30, and guests will number about 50. The affair will be a "hard times" party. Delicious refreshments were served at 10 o'clock. Mrs. W. F. Van Meter was a guest at the club last evening. Members present included Mrs. Gus Prescott, Mrs. W. C. Carle, Mrs. Harriet K. Boyd, Welcome M. Ward, C. B. The girls will leave on the five o'clock bus and will get down in time to take in the evening's festivities. Miss Callye Sparks is in charge of the arrangements. The opera will be staged at the high school auditorium, Santa Ana, on the nights of Dec. 4 and 5, instead of late in November as had been originally scheduled. The changes in dates, Rhodes stated, were decided upon at a meeting of the Choral Union directors held this week. Residents of Anaheim will have more than a little share in the production, Rhodes pointed out. Mrs. Arthur May, formerly of this city, now a resident of Santa Ana, one of the county's most popular vocalists, will probably be heard at the Anaheim presentation of the opera in the part of Maid Marian, though this has not been definitely decided. Miss Marjorie Warner will sing the part one of the nights that the opera is produced in Santa Ana. Two other residents of Anaheim, Mrs. J. W. Hitchecock and Glenn Merill, will have parts in the opera. Mrs. Hitchecock will alternate with Miss Kathleen Owens of Santa Ana in part of Annabel. Mr. Merrill will play the part of Little John, alternating with Robert Brown of Santa Ana. The name part will be in the hands of Raymond Miles, popular tenor of Santa Ana; Maurice Phillips of Santa Ana will be the Sheriff of Nottingham; Fred Wilde will play Sir Guy. Rubye de Remer. Luce entertained at dinner Wednesday for a number of the entertainers and patrons of the Norse Studio at Hollywood Guests Included Mr. and Mrs. Finn Haakon Frolich, the noted sculptor. A 7-pound, 14-oz. son was born Wednesday night in the Anakeim Community hospital to Mr. and Mrs. C. Calmer of Fullerton. The hospital also announces the birth today of an 8-pound 14-oz. daughter to Mr. and Mrs. H. Bunton of Anaheim. Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Hanson of Madison, Wis., arrived Tuesday night and are guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Prince. They will remain there until arrival of their furniture, which is en route, after which they will be at home in one of the Jack son cottages on Lemon street. Mr. and Mrs. Hanson passed the winter here last year and realize what great pleasure is in store for them. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hamilton Evans are now cozily located in their new home at 304 E. Wilhelmina, having moved Wednesday. They formerly resided at 321 S. Lemon. Mrs. Thomas Remp and Mrs. Martha Remp of Brea were guests at the Meeker home last evening. W. F. Van Meter is limping around these days. In stepping to the running board of the car, he missed his footing and slipped, spraining his ankle. The C. F. Grim family is passing today in Los Angeles. The Mosdames Sidney Prince and her house guest Mrs. Guy E. Hansen and Mrs. Mattie Thompson were in Long Beach last night to attend a lecture by a Christian Science reader. Dr. Leota P. Anderson was in Los Angeles making the Hear Mission Talks "An Evening in Alaska" was thoroughly enjoyed by the congregation which met at the Presbyterian church last night. As it was a warm evening, the wonderful iceberg and snow capped mountains were very enjoyable. One could almost see them when described by both Mrs. H. C. Downs and Mr. Harry Lewis. Mrs. Downs very vividly described her trip all up along the coast and the stops made at different towns which were once large cities. Miss Drake of Santa Ana, told of the school at Haines and the wonderful work done there and of the devotion of the children to Miss Jackson, the superintendent, whom she call, "Mother". Mr. Lewis spoke of how, when and where missions started in Alaska and especially mentioned the church and its wonderful native pastor Edward Marsden. Mrs. Downs had many curios that she brought back with her on display and Mr. Lewis had a great many beautiful pictures he took while there. The evening closed with a very pleasant social hour when tea and cakes were served. Bride and Groom Return Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Goddard returned home today after a week's honeymoon trip in the northern part of the state. Visits were made at Fresno and San Francisco and along the coast. Mrs. Goddard will be remembered as Miss Mareta Westphal, popular Anaheim girl and former employee at the American Savings Bank. Bridge Guests In Santa Ana A number of Anaheim ladies were included in the guest list invited by Mrs Nelson Edgar and Mrs John Reception To Members Royal Neighbors of America will meet in regular session Monday afternoon in Odd Follows hall. After the business all will repair to the banquet room where the camp will entertain the 1923 members, of whom there are more than 40. Each lady is asked to bring a covered dish for the supper and every member, more than 150, are urgently asked to be there and all are promised a good time. Baptist S. S. Council The junior department of Calvary Baptist Sunday school which recently was added, is working in first-class unison with other departments and the Sunday school is now thoroughly graded. Teachers and officers gathered at the H. H. Knox home Tuesday evening in monthly meeting and heard most encouraging reports from the several departments. Plans were discussed for Christmas entertainment for the children, and suggestions heard for further betterment of the organizations among the young people of the church. GERMAN GOVERNMENT PREPARES NEW NOTE LONDON, Oct. 19. — The German government has prepared a new note dealing with reparations, it was revealed by the German embassy today. It may not be delivered for some time as Berlin has decided to make informal overtures to the allied capitals before handing in the communication. FORD CATCHES FIRE The fire department was called out last night about 9:20 to extinguish a blazing Ford in front of the California theatre. The fire was out when the firemen arrived. The services were conducted by Rev. John L. Grand assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Howe, evangelist singers. The First National Bank of La Habra was host th the Kiwanis club of La Habra at the noon day meeting Thursday, which was held at the social hall. Several pleasant surprises to the club was rendered by the bank. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the McAulay undertaking porrors for Mrs. Marjorie Smith of Fullerton, mother of Mrs. C.W. Rowley of Mountain Views-ave. Mrs. A.B. Capers had a narrow escape from a serious accident Thursday morning from a gas accumulation in her cook stove. The explosion resulted in burned hands and eye lashes. Little Rodney Hilbert, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Hilbert, while playing on the end of the sluk board in the kitchen, leaned too far over to get something and fell, breaking his right arm at the elbow joint. Dr. D.L. Burgeson, after taking an X-ray picture, set the injured member and later pictures showed a perfect setting. The little fellow will be laid up for some time. Francis Rockwell of the Coyote lease had the misfortune to have a pipe fall on his foot, necessitating the amputation of one of his toes. He was taken to the Anaheim hospital where the operation was performed by the company doctor. The accident occurred Saturday. To enlarge the school ground for recreation John Kruse is pulling the trees from the acresage preparatory KANSAS CITY NOW HUBBY'S PARADISE KANSAS CITY, Oct. 19.—Kansas City's newly married husbands two or three years hence will not suffer from indigestion. Qualms of fear which every husband experiences when his wife attends a fashion show, will be forgotten. They will not have to dig down deep into their pockets monthly to buy their wives new hats or dresses. The home will be furnished attractively, but inexpensively. That is, it will be, if the husbands-to-be choose a Kansas City girl who has benefited by the home economics course offered in local public schools. Home—just one word—is the aim of the home economics course, according to Miss Anna E. Hussey, supervisor of the home economics course in the public schools. The value of a properly conducted home and the joy of keeping such a beautiful and clean is being stressed in all schools this year more than ever before. Miss Hussey says. "Girls are taught to love beauty and search for it, but they also are taught to find beautiful things at an inexpensive cost," she says. Young men contemplating getting married are advised and urged to give graduates of the Kansas City schools a chance. Miss Hussey promises they will find graduates of the home economics classes perfect women, so far as their knowledge of managing homes is concerned. The couple were attended by Mrs. Spencer and Mrs. Swartz, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Holsten uncle and aunt. Mrs. D. E. Fletcher of South Hiatt street entertained the Home club at her home Friday. A delightful afternoon was spent in needle work and planning for an elaborate Halloween party. Delicious refreshments were served late in the afternoon. Those present included Mondames, W. L. Roberts, D. E. Fletcher, Ed Davis, Clifford Davis, C. W. Rowley, and Mrs. Varnes. The Birthday club celebrated the natal day of Mrs. Bert York of Whittier Friday at the home of Mrs. Ray Rodfern of Florence-save. Beautiful fall flowers were used. A three-course luncheon was served at 1 o'clock, when Mrs. York was presented with a beautiful picture, "The End of the Trail". The afternoon was spent in music and chatting. C., and Echel Towler spent Sunday at Tia Juann. Those who arrived from Pateville, Arkansas this week are Mr. and Mrs. M. D. McCamish and grand-daughter, C. R. Guthey and wife.
