18,535 PUPILS IN ORANGE-CO. SCHOOLS
The enrollment in the public schools of the county, including elementary, high and junior colleges, totals 18,535 according to a compilation made today by R. P. Mitchell, county superintendent. This is a gain of approximately 16 per cent over last year.
The enrollment figures are those following the first week of enrollment, the last of the individual reports on which reached Mitchell this week. The corresponding figures for last year are lacking, but the average attendance amounted to 16,368. On this barls the gain this year was 2,157. But an estimated 500 should be added to this year's figures, according to Mitchell, because Mexicans busy with walnut picking are not enrolled until later and because new pupils constantly are being added during the year.
The enrollment in detail this year was: Elementary schools, 14,242; high schools, 3,883; junior colleges, 2,482,292.
The huge jump in the junior college enrollment Mitchell ascribes to the fact that students who attended Pomona the first year came back home for the second year to avoid the tuition of $250 charged.
