DUCK SEASON OPENS
WITH A GREAT BOOM
The duck season opened with a boom, many hunters having taken out licenses at the Wisser sporting goods house and the Kern Cycle Shop. And if the success of Mr. Wisser, who went out for a short hunt Monday, can be taken as a sample, the poor ducks are out of luck. Wisser, Paul Nichols and Jack Warner went to Anaheim Landing, killed 28 ducks, and returned by 8:30 a.m.
Others taking out licenses at the Wisser house included Otto E. Carter, G. L. Jones, Grant Unckles, A. G. Kettler, H. Grimes, C. A. Jerzy, V. Rush, B. G. Schlosser, E. L. Hatcher, H. L. McKinley, C. DAY GREAT COLTS MAY MEET SATURDAY
NEW YORK, Oct. 2. Some time today definite announcement is expected that Harry Sinclair's Zev and Admiral Cary T. Grayson's My Own have been matched to race next Saturday for the honor of meeting Papyrus, the English champion, Oct. 20.
At last reports, Sam Hilareth, trainer of Zev, had declared for a trial at a mile and an eighth because he believed the coot was not prepared to go a longer distance at this time. Simultaneously, Admiral Grayson stated that the race would be at a mile and a half, the distance named for the international event, or not at all.
But well-pasted horsemen have informed the writer that a compromise will be affected and intimated that all parties concerned will finally agree to a trial at a mile and a quarter.
If no compromise is possible, however, it is believed that Zev will be named as the American candidate by the selection committee on Saturday, the last day on which the nomination can be made.
Speaking for the committee, August Belmout plainly indicated its tendencies when he said today:
"Zev ran the Lawrence realization, a mile and a half, in 2:30 3-5. My Own finished the same distance with conditions virtually identical, in 2:32 1-5 in the trial sweepstakes."
"Also in the Lawrence realization, the mile was covered by Untidy in 1:37 3-5 with Zev close up under slight restraint. Whereas, the first mile of the trial sweepstakes was only run in 1:29 1-5, a speed covered by home runs."

SECOND DISTRESS SIGNAL FROM SHIP
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2. For the second time within 24 hours distress radio calls were received today from the freighter Diana Dollar, of the Robert Dollar Line, reported afire after an explosion in her hold.
The ship, according to radio advises, is off the Mexican coast near Banderas Bay.
First calls for assistance were picked up early yesterday by the Radic Corporation of America at Wilmington, but later reports from the burning ship reported the crew could handle the situation.
However, a second call for help was intercepted early today. The latest advice report that 60 members of the crew might be forced to take to life boats and asked all ships close by to rush to their aid.
The American Shipping Board vessel President Hayes, the Dutch motorship Drechtdyke, the Mexican vessel Cohuilla, the S. Argonne and Cacique are all reported to be within a radius of 100 miles of the stricken ship and aware of her plight.
According to intercepted radio messages, Captain Anderson of the Diana Dollar has his boat anchored close to shore and the life boats lowered ready to take them if necessary.
Advices picked up by the Radio Corp. of America from the Diana Dollar stated the fire on the ship was centered in No. 6 hold, which had been broken open and flooded with 12 feet of water in an attempt to extinguish the fire of blazing oil.
The same advices stated that Captain Anderson of the Diana Dollar was prepared to beach his vessel if necessary at a point where it could be easily salvaged and flood it.
The location of the Diana Dollar is given as approximately 1150 miles south of San Pedro. She also is said to be anchored a half mile off Band-
Speaking for the committee, August Belmont plainly indicated its tendencies when he said today:
"Zev ran the Lawrence realization, a mile and a half, in 2:30 3-5. My finished the same distance with conditions virtually identical, in 2:32 1-5 in the trial sweepstakes.
"Also in the Lawrence realization, the mile was covered by Untidy in 1:37 3-5 with Zev close up under slight restraint. Whereas, the first mile of the trial sweepstakes was only run in 1:29 1-5, a speed covered by horses of all classes.
"This is not conclusive but it is seriously indicative."
However, in view of Brigadier General William Mitchell's letter to Mr. Belmont, demanding action on Hildreth's early refusal to race Zev in a trial with My Own, horsemen here seriously doubt whether the jockey club committee will have the tenacity to name the Sinclair celt unless he proves his worthiness in an actual race. It is this lack of conviction that will force a compromise they declared.
Public opinion is divided on the question of the respective ability of Zev and My Own, but it is unanimous on the point that a satisfactory candidate for the international race can only be determined thru a trial.
Majority of racing men look upon Zev with favor. He was beaten in only one start this season, being kicked at the post in the Preakness and refusing to run. Subsequently, he won the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont, the historic Witbers, the Paumonok handicap, the Lawrence Realization, the Autumn Dash, the Queen's County Handicap and the Rainbow Handicap. The distances ranged from six furlongs to a mile and six furlongs, proof of both speed and stamina.
In the Lawrence, Zev cast a frog and until recently was out of training altogether. Hence, Hildreth's refusal to race a trial, in fact, he will race Saturday with the understanding that the jockey club must take the responsibility if anything happens.
My Own came into prominence at Saratoga where he won four races including the Saratoga cup event. Last month he came here to beat Untidy in the national trial sweepstakes, one of the official tests for the international match race.
He is now at Laurel, and according to Admiral Grayson, in top condition, reports to the contrary notwithstanding.
