LABOR FEDERATION
RAPS KU KLUX KLAN
PORTLAND, Oct. 2. — Opposition to the Ku Klux Klan will be plain-spoken and direct during the American federation of labor convention, many delegates admitted today at the opening of the second day's session of the big labor gathering here.
Groups of eastern delegates are determined by resolution to couch in no uncertain terms their antagonism to the "invisible empire" they stated in commenting on the executive council report which flayed the Klan and other secret organizations.
The temper of the assembled delegates was expressed yesterday when James Duncan, first vice-president of the A. F. of L., read the digest of the executive report which touched on the Klan situation.
"We feel that the Ku Klux Klan is destructive to that freedom and devotion to the principles of liberty which we regard as the first essential in democratic civilization," Duncan read. "We know of nothing that could be more intolerable or more hostile to the purposes of organized government or the trade union movement."
Enthusiastic applause greeted the reading. Of all the subjects touched on by the executive report, this was the only one which caused any cheering.
The executive council minced no words in its denunciation of the Klan. In summing up the report said: "We believe that no trade unionist can consistently participate in the activities of the Ku Klux Klan or any similar organization, and we unhesitatingly denounce its efforts to supplant organized government, to promote religious intolerance, racial antagonisms and bigotry."
INQUEST DISCLOSES BANKER IS SUICIDE
LINDSAY, Oct. 2. — Testimony at a coroner's inquest last night developed the unexpected fact that G. V. Reed, vice-president and manager of the First National bank of Lindsey, committed suicide some time early Monday morning, instead of having died of heart trouble, as was at first announced.
According to the testimony at the inquest, Reed's body was found in the bathroom with a tube from a gas heating stove in his mouth and the gas turned on.
A note addressed to his wife was found, the testimony revealed, in which he explained that "business pressure is too great for me, I cannot stand the strain."
His accounts at the bank are in perfect order. He had been vice-president since the organization of the institution in 1906.
AERIAL LEVIATHAN REACHES ST. LOUIS

The giant airship will be held at the flying field until shortly before noon today when it will nose its way northeastward for Detroit, passing over Chicago on the way.
HOLD TRUCKERS FOR LEAVING INJURED

FOSTER FAILS TO VISIT PORTLAND
PORTLAND, Oct. 2. — Wm. Zane Foster, radical leader, will not be here during the A. F. of L. convention according to department of justice agents today.
Foster was scheduled for speaking engagements at a local hall Oct. 7 and 10. No reason was given by federal officers for Foster's failure to come.
William Dunne, said to be the former editor of the Butte Bulletin, will fill Foster's engagements, federal agents stated.
Twenty-one communists and radicals are in Portland, federal officers are informed, and are believed to be meeting secretly to further their endeavors in the labor movement.
ABOLISH SPANISH MUNICIPAL COUNCILS
MADRID, Oct. 2. — A royal decree was issued today abolishing municipal councils in Spain.
General Primo Rivera, head of the directory, is considering a non-party scheme to decentralize the nation, abolish political parties and re-organize parliament on the lines of the U. S. congress.

BLUNDER CORRECTED
A man with a broad face should avoid wearing a hat with deep dent in the sides. They make the hat appear too small and the contour line of the head to run to a peak at the top. A hat with no dents or very slight ones will conform more to the lines of the face and tend to lengthen it.

The regular meeting of the local post of the American Legion is scheduled for tonight at the Legion clubrooms in the basement of the new city hall. Who are the people that have made their money in the oil game in So. Calif.?
