HI GETS DECISION OVER ORANA CLUB
By Sargum Sprout
Hiram Johnson received the decision over the Orange County Athletic club last evening. Hiram's attendance outnumbered the clubs by several hundred, but that did not detract from the show the club put on. About 1000 saw a real good card from curtain to curtain.
A disabled war veteran opened the show with a speech in which he explained the object of the World War Veterans Ass'n. The Legless Bard sang a song that was well received. An orchestra entertained the early comers and in between the beats. All in all we had a big evening.
Eddie Doolis and Gilman opened the boxing entertainment with four rounds of honest to goodness mixing. Doolis was credited with a clean knock down in the first and had a good lead otherwise but Gilman came back in the following rounds and reserved a draw but received the short end.
Jack Reed uncorked a windmill left that had Babe Orton guessing for about two minutes. This Reed is tall and lankey and brings his left from in back of his flask pocket with much rapidity. Babe evidently had never fought a buzz saw before and he was dumfounded for a time, but he finally decided the thing could be hit and he tried a left hook to the chin which stopped the proceedings. This bout had the fans on their feet while it lasted.
Johnny Nandes was out-classed in all four rounds of his bout with Paul Donza. This Donza is a nifty mit clinger and Johnny did well to keep the bout as even as he did.
The Pennant Race
The Giants speeding home today after their final western trip, found themselves needing but one more victory to win the pennant, even if the Reds should win all of their remaining games.
The Giants have five games to play, four with the Dodgers and one with the Braves. If they win one of these and the Reds win four games, the final standing of the teams would be:
W L Pet.
New York ...94 50 .614
Cincinnati ...94 60 .610
The Giants will be idle until Friday, when they meet the Robins at the Polo Grounds, while the Reds will not play until the end of the week, when they clash with the Cardinals.

Johnny Nandes was out-classed in all four rounds of his bout with Paul Donza. This Donza is a nifty mil clinger and Johnny did well to keep the bout as even as he did.
Curley Brown had K. O. Brown down about half the time during the first round and while he was a mile in the lead K. O. landed once on Curley's eye that loosened the floodgates. In the second K. O. was down for the count of nine, up and groggy landed one that almost upset Curley. Curley knocked K. O. to his hands and knees and was so anxious to finish the Orange lad that he slammed the fallen lad and lost the fight on a foul.
Tobby Montoya was outweighed and out classed by Jack Lewis. Tobby looked bad against such odds. Toby was hurt once with a foul that the referee did not see. Lewis is a good boy and the fans would enjoy seeing him box someone his weight.
Jack Iman put up a real fight with Burman of San Francisco in the semi-windup. After a poor start, Jack evened the first and took the next two. In the fourth Jack had the Frisco lad in a very bad way but got in the way of a hook to the chin that befuddled the Santa Ana lad and at the finish he was hanging on, dead on his feet. Another blow would have put Jack away. The whirlwind finish gave the Frisco lad a draw.
Dick Griffin is under contract to the Hollywood club and that club refused to allow the Fort Worth boxer to take part in any exhibitions outside their own arena. Ashton Donza was substituted and gave Kid Sunday of San Diego a boxing lesson that the Kid will remember for many a day. The Kid was too tough to be put away but absorbed enough punches to sink a battleship. Sunday was introduced as Billy which was quite a slam on one of the Sundays. They both use their fists in their professions but we never heard the Kid say a word which is very unlike the great Billy.

Tagging All the Bases
The Giants stepped blithely along to within a single game of the pennant by beating the Reds 3 to 2.
Coming like a bolt from the blue, the Athletics won two games from the Indians, 6 to 5 and 5 to 1.
Jess Haines fell heir to his twentieth victory of the season when the Cardinals beat the Dodgers 4 to 1.
A three run rally in the ninth gave the Tigers a 5 to 4 win over the Yankees.
The Pirates mailed four Phillie pitchers for 22 hits and won, 18 to 5.

TWO MORE DAYS OF GRID SCRIMMAGE
Only two more days of seriage at Anaheim H. S. for Coach Fitzmorris' football squad before the first outside practice game at Compton Friday on the local field. The boys lined up for inspection last evening in their complete new uniforms and made a great hit with the student body.
Just who will be placed in the first quarter has not been decided. However Coach Fitzmorris will give his entire string a chance in action. This game with Compton will be invaluable as it will give the boys the practice they need for the first league game with Huntington Beach on Anaheim's grid, Oct. 20. Several lettermen are in back in uniform and there is much other good material to construct a winning machine.
SARGUM PROUTINGS
The more that is said of the Firpo-Dempsey right by the experts, the more we know there was not a same man present during the three minutes and, 50 seconds the night was going on. There was too much excitement going on for any one to see more than half and what was seen was exaggerated by the onlookers' overwrought condition. Even old time sport writers went daffy.
There was crowded in just a little over a round more thrilling action than many great lights produced in 10 or 20 rounds.
ANAHEIM HI SCHOOL GYM CLASSES BUSY
Athletic activities at Anaheim H. S. are keeping all gym classes busy. Something is doing continuously. Tennis has started and the courts may be seen full at all periods of the day. Interclass tennis meets will be held in several weeks. L. E. Satherland is coaching this branch.
Anaheim's class B football team played Compton this afternoon. The class B team is equivalent to last year's 130-pounds. The four-point system is used in all the schools in the state this year. The players are graded according to age, grade, height and weight. The system includes both the class A and B teams. Freshmen are barred from the class A division. The O. J. F. rules govern this system. If a player has had a year or more of experience and is under 140 pounds and is around 15 years old, he belongs in the B class. This rule serves the same in basketball and football and even up the teams in the county.
Class A will play Compton Friday evening.
Coach Sutherland yesterday staged a swimming match at the plunge for sophomore and junior boys. A contest will be held next for the winners of the class events. The three highest in each class will compete.
Winners of yesterday's swim were Rector Coons, Harold Sierson and Zeus Ochoa, 25 and 50-yd free style.
25-yd dash—Jungkelt, Dargatz and Chandler.
50-yd, dsh—Washburn, Dargatz and Jungkelt.
Coach Sutherland has charge of the girls and boys, tennis teams and swimming, and boys class B teams.

SO. CALIF. CHAMPION LEADING OPPONENT
DEL. MONTE, Sept. 26. — At the end of the first half of the first round of match play of the state
The more that is said of the Firpo-Dempsey right by the experts, the more we know there was not a same man present during the three minutes and 50 seconds the night was going on. There was too much excitement going on for any one to see more than half and what was seen was exaggerated by the on-tookers' overwrought condition. Even old time sport writers went daffy.
There was crowded in just a little over a round more thrilling action than many greatights produced in 10 or 20 rounds. The marvelous physical condition of the fighters that enabled them to take such terrible punishment and come back for more had the onlookers bewildered. No one can conceive a man who could be knocked down seven times in such a short time with such force and still keep fighting and almost conquering his adversary by a knock out.
Louis Angel Firpo's demonstration of strength and stamina was marvelous and only slightly less was that of Jack Dempsey. Jack was down only three times but he had to be a real champion to come back.
This talk of foulighting is all coo-coo. Who was there looking on sane enough to really know which a foul was struck? Perhaps neither man lived up to the rules of strict ring etiquette. The champion is one of those sportmen who take advantage of every opening. Win by all means is his motto and he is the champion. Any one who fights Jack Dempsey must be prepared to take care of himself at any and all time. We many not admire Jack's methods but he gets there just the same.
Tommy Gibbons is doing a lot of explaining how the fight was won and lost. Tommy's guess is about as good as the guesser of the rest of us. We'll bet a cookie that Tommy Gibbons can not stay 15 rounds with Firpo. Tomn is a smart ring man and a good boxer but boxing a man who can box-and boxing a wild fighter are two different propositions.
Jack Dempsey started into box Firpo but saw right away that such a course was impossible. The big Argentinian has to be stopped or some one is going to get hurt. I do not believe that Tommy Gibbons can stay ten rounds with Dempsey another time.
Well, I guess our Elks can bring home the bacon. Their game with Sacramento for the state championship proved somewhat of a farce, just too much Anaheim as the 14 to 1 score would indicate. Harry Hughes must have had his curve ball working over time as the Northerners failed to do any damage but the one time and that did not have the Howling One in trouble for long.
Old Strong Arm Art Ramage demonstrated how to Firpo the horsehide for a couple of round trips. If Art keeps on with his rough stuff and Chandler,
50-yd, dash—Washburn, Dargatz and Jungkoff.

PAPYRUS STANDING SEA JOURNEY WELL
NEW YORK, Sept. 26. Radio advice from the Aquitania, which is bearing Papyrus into port for the international match race with America's leading 3-year-old, indicate that the English derby winner is continuing to survive the rigors of the ocean voyage without distress.
The ship, according to reports, has run into storms, Basil Jarvis, the trainer, stating by radio that the seas have been unusually high.
Papyrus' quarters, however, are apt of the "D" deck, the best position on the liner to overcome the motion of the sea, and the horse is standing the journey well, Jarvis reported.
The Aquitania is due to dock here on Friday afternoon.

SO. CALIF. CHAMPION LEADING OPPONENT
DELI.MONTE, Sept. 26. At the end of the first half of the first round of match play of the state amateur golf championship, the standing leaders in the championship was as follows:
Willie Hunter, So. Calif. champion,
1 up on C. E. Goley of San Francisco.
J. F. Neville, titleholder, 1 up on A. E. Darbee.
E. M. Eddy, Los Angeles, 2 up on Clark Spirs, former Canadian champion.
Claude Edwards, San Francisco champion, 1 up on M.J. O'Brien.
G. H. Mullin, 2 up on Kales.
Rudie Wilhelm, former Pacific northwest champion, 3 up on D.C. Walters of Oakland.
Fred Wright Jr., of Los Angeles, 6 up on Fred Barber, Los Angeles city champion.
J. J. McHugh, San Francisco, 1 up on H. Seaver.
Sam Conlan, San Francisco and W.C. Ryan, all square.
The surprise of the morning play was the failure of Willie Hunter to establish a safe lead over Charlie Foley, and the failure of Jack Neville to clinch his match with A.E. Darbee.
RED SOX WINNERS
BOSTON, Sept. 26. Although able to connect safely with the offerings of Davis but four times, the Red Sox downed St. Louis today, winning by a 3 to 2 score.
Murray allowed St. Louis eight hits, but was tight in the pinches. He eased up in the last innning when the Browns scored their two runs.

Old Strong Arm Art Ramage demonstrated how to Firpo the horse-hide for a couple of round trips. If Art keeps on with his rough stuff he will have Babe Ruth tied to the starting post. His first homer must have taken the heart out of the northern aggregation as Anaheim scored nine runs in that inning.
Every one was wrong as to who would play third base, Fay Lewis did that little job and did it right well. Curley McLain got in the game in the last inning as a substitute for Doty Bush who was slightly injured by a pitched ball.
Our boys all played good ball and won for us the state championship of the Elks league, and now we are all back of them to win over the Shell Oilers for the So. Calif. semi-pro champship.
Old Sargum Sprout hit the nail on the head several weeks ago when he told you that the New York Yanks and Giants would repeat in the Big Leagues and the Frisco Seals in our Coast league. The Yanks have already ridden home and the Giants and Seals are seafar in the lead that they will never be headed.
The Giants will have a harder World's series to capture this year than that of last. Babe Ruth is going to make trouble for the Giants this time, but the Giants look to be stronger and better balanced and will retain their honors.
Babe Ruth was given the honor of being more valuable to his team than any other player on the American league. Last year Ruth did not receive mention in the selection, all of which goes to prove how the big boy has worked and how he has succeeded in coming back from a laughed at and disliked player to the most popular in his league.
