TAXES INDICATE MILLIONS AT SHOWS Twenty million persons attended motion picture theaters and other places of amusement in the Southern California District last month. This sets a new record according to Collector of Internal Revenue Rex Goodell. It indicates that the attendance for the year will reach the quarter billion mark, or more than twice the population of the United States, and that $46,500,000 will be spent for amusements in the district during the year. Admission tax receipts for the month were $322,244.41, a gain of 33 per cent as against collections of $240,626.87 for the corresponding period of last year. At this rate the tax receipts for 1923 will be $3,868,132.92 as against $582,606 for the entire year of 1918—just five years ago—when the tax on ten cent admissions was in effect. In explaining the almost unbelievable growth of motion picture attendance in Southern California, Collector Goodcell said that the fact that Los Angeles had displaced New York as the Nation's official critic of motion pictures, figured largely in the remarkable expansion in motion picture attendance in Southern California. ENGLAND FEARS U.S. DRY RESULT LONDON, Sept. 8.—The misinformation that England gets about the American prohibition would fill a book today. England is interested in American prohibition, chiefly in its failure for England regards this as an experiment which may be extended to this country. If it succeeds, There- DUTIFUL DAUGHTER IRKS MRS. ASQUITH SOUTHAMPTON, Sept. 8.—Mrs. Asquith does not believe that her daughter, Princess Bibesco, would or could "disobey" her. Unfortunately the Princess has done so. It happened at Southampton. Elizabeth was due to arrive from the United States on the Olympic But punctuality never having been her long suit, Mrs. Asquith was late in her arrival to meet her daughter. The ship's officers announced that the Princess had already left the ship. But Mrs. Asquith would not credit this story. "I know my daughter would not leave the ship before I came," she said. "I had wirelessed her to remain until my arrival." "I absolutely refuse to believe that Elizabeth would disobey me." Mrs. Asquith searched the ship high and low; she visited her daughter's cabin, she made a tour of all the public rooms. But still no Elizabeth. So the indignant mother drove to the Southwestern hotel, where she found the Princess awaiting her. What took place at the interview is not recorded. FLAPPER WRECKS HAIR NET GAME WASHINGTON, Sept. 8.—The "pigtail" hair net industry of China has gone to "pot" because of the whims and caprices of the American flapper, Consul Lupton at Chefoo, reported to the Department of Commerce recently. The flapper just won't wear 'em and the industry is collapsed. Last year the single strand nets were in vogue but the flapper has now ruled them "passes." As a result the industry and importers are glutted with singles for which there is no market. Attempts to palm them off on the trade below prices. England is interested in American prohibition, chiefly in its failure, for England regards this as an experiment which may be extended to this country, if it succeeds. Therefore everyone who has been to America, or who has as much as had a letter from America that derides prohibition, can get a long and enthusiastic hearing in England. Lord Astor charges that the English liquor trade is behind strong anti-American propaganda, but certainly the English liquor trade has no measure of control over American statesmen, near-statemen and semi-statesmen and those who come to Europe and publicly announce that prohibition is a failure. The English public cuts up the words of these individuals however, and cries for more. The more seems to come on every boat that docks. English newspapers publish in great detail the operations of American bootleggers in fact some papers publish hardly any other American news except the bootleggers news. SAVINGS DISAPPEAR IN "MAGIC" TEST GARY, Ind., Sept. 8.—The days when witches were burned at the stake were recalled when Katie Kawolski Gary secrecy was sentenced to from one to fourteen years in the Indiana women's prison for the practicing of her black magic. Mrs. Kawolski was charged with using her mysterious arts to increase her own bankroll at the expense of the bankroll of a client, Anna Brocka, and was found guilty of larceny. According to the charges Mrs. Kawolski promised to increase Mrs. Brocka's savings of $400 to $800 by use of magic. She directed Mrs. Brocka to put part of the savings in a bottle and part in a handkerchief and go to sleep. When Mrs. Brocka awoke she found the $400 has magically disappeared instead of being magically multiplied. FOR RESULTS—Try a Plain Dealer Want-ad. LUNCHEON DANCE LATEST VOGUE PARIS, Sept. 8.—Luncheon dancing is Paris' latest innovation, provided by a restaurant recently opened near the Rue de la Paix, world's famous center. Police permission had to be obtained before the new idea could be tried. Now a jazz band functions from noon until 3 o'clock every day. Midnettes, little seamstresses from the Rue de la Paix style shops, spend their two-hour luncheon time there. CENTRAL EUROPE HAS THE FATTEST MAN BUDAHEST, Sept. 8.—The Serbs, Croats and Slovenes possess the fattest man in the world. He comes from the town of Zaltchar, and is "estimated," to weigh 36 stone. His "width" is given as 5½ feet, and when he wants a suit it takes more than sixteen feet of cloth to make it. Artistic temperament first manifest itself as a desire for a cigarette holder six inches long. Y., Sept 8.—In 1863 Adolph Kirchner, of this city, then a boy of 11, formed his own company of youthful volunteers to fight against Rusala in the Polish rebellion. Now, 60 years afterward, he has been decorated for his services by the Polish government. The Polish medal of honor was pinned upon his breast at services here by Vice-consul Eiland Kaillenski. Kirchner organized his brigade during the Polish rebellion of 1863 when Poland refused to continue under Russian subjection. Poland was defeated. Kirchner twice was wound ed in skirmishes. He came to America 40 years ago and has lived in Syracuse since 1857. He is the only survivor in New York State of the 1863 rebellion. FORGOT SELF WHEN HE SAW WHISKEY NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 8.—Daniel Horan, public school janitor, has lost his taste for sitting in the city court room here listening to trials during his off-duty periods. Daniel, engrossed in a recent liquor case hearing, forgot where he was when the chief of police, in blue and gold out on the witness stand, exhibiting a bottle of Bourbon and telling where he found it. "Open her up and pass her around Cheif, suggested Horan at the top of his voice in the open court, and immediately was forced to part with $5 to purge himself of contempt." BRICKLAYING NEW COURSE AT UTICA UTICA, N. Y., Sept. 8.—Bricklaying has been added to the course of study at the Utica Free Academy. With a shortage of bricklayers prevailing in this city, as well as in other communities, and workmen getting an average of $12 a day for laying bricks, the Board of Education has approved expenditures of about $100 for equipment and materials to conduct the course. First lesons will be given at the opening of the Fall term. It is expected that at least 150 students will enroll. A bricklayer and a carpenter have been employed to teach the subjects. ALL RIGHT TO LAUGH CHICAGO, Sept. 8.—The principle that it is perfectly all right under the constitution Magua Charta and Declaration of Independence, to laugh when someone has been a laugh when someone pops a constable with a brick has been upheld in the Chicago Criminal Court. Charles Bethke, of Dolon, Ill., opened his mouth and laughed right out loud when he saw someone heave a brick at the town watchdog. A country justice of the peace final him $10 and costs for his murrh. The fine was reversed when Bethke appealed. For best results try Plain Dealer Want-ad.
