HARDING REAL KING IN KNIGHTHOOD ROLE When Cosmopolitan Productions secured the pictorial rights to Chas. Major's historical romance, "When Knighthood Was in Flower," it was announced that the best possible cast would be selected to support Marion Davies in the stellar role of Princess Mary Tudor. As an earnest of the strict performance of this promise it is to be noted that the eminent English actor manager, Lyn Harding, was induced to come to this country especially to appear as King Henry VII—which role he has played more than two hundred times on the stage, and for which he is considered the ideal in England. Mr. Harding is six feet tall and burly. When he dons the heavily embroidered silken doublet and hose, the short cloak, plumed hat and jewelled dagger of Henry VIII, he looks exactly as if he had stepped out of a life-sized painting of that jovial monarch. One consideration which induced Mr. Harding to come to this country especially for this production was to preserve his version of the much-married monarch in motion pictures—especially as he is characterized in "When Knighthood Was in Flower" which will be shown at the United theater tonight and Saturday. Mr. Harding's parents intended him for the church, but he took to agriculture. Farming was not his forte, so he joined a touring theatrical company, and played in China, Japan and India. Returning to England, he was engaged by Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Mr. Harding played such roles as Henry VIII, Brutus, Cassius, Bollingbroke, Richard II and Prospero. This repertoire gave him splendid training in romantic and costume roles. Mr. Harding, who may be considered an expert on period plays, expressed his delight at the meticulous care given to every detail in Cosmopolitan's production of "When Knighthood Was in Flower." "Sir Herbert himself could not have done." ACTORS OPERATE SARAH'S THEATRE PARIS, Sept. 7.—Administration of the Sarah Dernhardt Theatre, nominally under the direction of the great tragedienne during the last 20 years, has passed since her death into the hands of a group of ten actors and actresses. The theatre situated on the Place Catelet, received its present name on January 21, 1899, when the "Divine Sarah" participated in the inauguration. Originally the theatre was built in 1868 in the Lyric Brewery by fire in 1871, it was rebuilt as the Historic Theatre. Before assuming its present name it was known successfully as the Theatre of the Nations, Italian Theatre and the Theatre of Paris. The Opera-Comique Company played there in 1887, after the destruction of the old Opera-Comique and before the construction of their present theatre. SUCKER LIST STAYS AKRON, Sept. 7.—"The slicker will get you if you don watch out" in the warning sent out by the Akron Better Business Association this week. Investigation by the commission has shown that the "sucker list" is never destroyed, and it is only after years of refusal to bite the second time that names are cancelled. Main Office, Sacramento LONDON LEARNS NEW USES FOR ICE LONDON, Sept. 7. Americans certainly boom the ice market when they hit London. More than 2,000 American tourists decended on the British capital in 24 hours during a recent British heat wave. The demand for ice immediately began to get ahead of the supply. The Savoy hotel where nearly 500 Americans were quartered has an ice plant with a capacity of 16 tons a day. The day before the big American caravan arrived the patrons of the hotel consumed six tons of ice. The next day the hotel’s plant ran its full capacity and the officials of the hostelry had to buy two tons of additional ice in the open market to meet the demands of their guests. The American tourists are showing the British more new ways to use ice than they ever thought of. Resourceful Yankees even have succeeded in getting cooling draughts of ice tea in British restaurants, but it is reported the conservative members of Parliament are planning to ask the Prime Minister to take steps to put an end to this flagrant heresy against the time-honored British institution of tea.
