MAUNA LOA
ERUPTING AGAIN
HONOLULU, Sept. 7.—Hundreds of residents of the Hawaiian Islands are flocking to the "Big Island." Hawaii, to gaze in awe upon a spectacle that has never before presented such a terrifying aspect and may never again.
The entire fire pit of Halemau-mau in the crater of the volcano Kilauea on the side of the mountain Maua Loa is now a mass of seething lava, the largest lava pool ever seen in the "house of fire" as Halemau-mau is called by Hawaiians.
Dr. T. A. Jaggar, in charge of the volcanic observatory, reports that several small pits and lakes of lava have combined into a single lake which comprises the entire area at the bottom of the pit, nearly two miles in circumference. The main fountain of lava issues from the southeastern end of the pit, fumes and noxious odors make the western rim exceedingly dangerous for HEIRS IN GERMANY

TOBACCO FARMERS
SEEK INDEPENDENCE
KINGSTREE, S. C., Sept. 7—Two thousand tobacco farmers who listened to an address by United States Senator E. D. Smith of South Carolina, at a great barbecue held in celebration of the success of the Tobacco Growers' Co-operative Association in its first year of marketing, have begun discussion of ways and means of attaining economic independence.
The Senator hinted strongly at the domination of South Carolina tobacco markets by British financial interests and mentioned the Imperial Tobacco Company, of Great Britain as a powerful factor in setting the price for the labor of the farmers and their children.
The Senator's intimation that antagonism of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain to cooperative marketing is thwarting efforts of thousands of South Carolina farmers to improve their living conditions injected a new note into

Fullerton's jump from $4.25 last year to $4.95 this year already has been announced.
Huntington Beach, omitting the local city rate which usually is included, is $.25 lower at $2.50, because of the school tax which is that much less. Santa Ana's combined rate is the same, because a cut of $.05 in the city rate balances a gain of the same amount in the school rate.
