BUMPER VALENCIA CROP OVER COUNTY Conditions over the county indicate that its crop of valencias, as well as miscellaneous varieties of oranges, will prove a bumper one the same as in the Anaheim district, according to A. A. Brock, county horticultural commissioner. Brock's estimate is nearly 18000 cars for oranges of all kinds and 14,000 for valencias. Lemon-like will be a crop close to 25 per cent larger than that of 1920-21, says Brock. This was the banner orange year for Orange-co. Figuring at least 2500 cars of leonons for the county barring accident of cold weather, etc., Brock says that in 1920-21 only 2,071½ cars were shipped. Brock apparently allows for trees destroyed in the cold weather of two years ago that had to be pulled out. Taking the average of the estimate of G. W. Sandilands, Manager of the Anaheim Orange & Lomen Ass'n, who figured a crop of 8500 to 4000 cars for the Anaheim district, compared with 3,000 in 1920-21, the gain would be 750 cars or a flat 25 per cent. In the previous bumper years the county shipped 14,239½ cars of oranges of all varieties or 11,270 of valencias. Adding 25 per cent to these totals we got 17,759 all told or 14,687 for valencias. At 4484 the Artesia Oil Company claims to have found something that assures field. Recent newcomers on the Artesia field this past week are C. C. Julian, and the Jameson Oil Company. W. M. Keck is going ahead carefully and painstakingly with the Calpetro well at Bellflower. It is understood that the drilling has 1300 feet and the outlook is good. Keck has a wonderful reputation for drilling oil wells and if there is anything at Bellflower will find it. The National Security Oil Company is going ahead with its Orange Park well and wants to get further into the sands before making another production test. Drilling is now close to 5106 feet, the formation carries gas and colors. At Compton interest centers on C. C. Julian. Pico set the 10-inch at 5609 and with the drilling out of cement and drilling ahead this well will present interesting developments for the new field. The Union Oil Co. is going ahead with the Callender well and will find the deepand if there is one to find. Drilling on the Callender well has passed the 4000 foot mark and is going nicely. Considerable core sampling is being done and a very careful record of the progress made is a feature of the drilling. At Ocean Park Heights the Southland Petroleum's test well has passed the 2800 foot mark. The drilling from 3500 to 3800 has shown some very encouraging indications of oil and there is a strong feeling that Ocean Park Heights will make a field. However it is the opinion of the writer that the well will have to make a showing above the 4000 foot mark if it is going to get into the pay. COURTHOUSE NEWS In People vs R. W. Those incharge of the training of Luis Angel Firpo for his bout with Jack Dempsey today were devoting their best efforts to bring the Argentine out of the temperamental grouch which yesterday gave evidence of seriously interfering with the challenger's work. They were compelled to resort to tact in order to attain their ends. Firpo is king in his own camp and if he wants to work or load his subjects merely shrug their shoulders and wish it were not so. Apparently the only thing the challenger does with real pleasure is to get up at six and do some road work on the board walk. He likes to do this and leave his companions half a mile behind in a six mile run. When the trip is over, the others find him seated contentedly on the walk ready to josh the others unmercifully for their lack of endurance.
