ANNUAL PARAMOUNT WEEK SEPT. 2 TO 8TH The Sixth Annual Paramount week will be celebrated nationally this year during the period between September and 2nd inclusive. This event, now recognized throughout the nation as the most important of the entire theatrical calendar, has grown to be an emphatic demonstration in favor of bigger and better motion pictures. The Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, producers and distributors of Paramount pictures are directly responsible for the event, and have consistently sponsored all that it stands for. Born of that ambition which has always governed the making of Paramount pictures, that they be recognized as the highest standard of screen value, Paramount week, from an humble beginning six years ago, has grown steadily year by year in importance, until it is now eagerly looked forward to by the theatre-goers of every community in the entire nation. The theatres everywhere have joined enthusiastically year by year with the public at large in making the event an impressive one, until it is very doubtful now if there is a single contributing factor any more responsible for the steady uplift of the silent stage than this same Paramount week. As each year has found it more firmly implanted with the public, the mercantile world generally has come to realize the importance of Paramount week, and it is the universal rule now that lavish co-operation between the commercial and the theatrical interests at this period is the order of things. From the largest to the smallest establishments, displays, co-operative advertising and the general conduct of the commercial marts leaves no room to doubt that Paramount week has made an impression as general as it is sincere. It is the period for reviewing the work accomplished during the year then ending, and for the announcements of the attractions to be offered by Paramount during the year then starting. Every national magazine of importance will carry liberal announcements this year, and over 2500 newspapers throughout the nation will spread the glad tidings from coast to coast. Annaheim is going to celebrate Paramount week this year with a program of Paramount pictures calculated not only to prove unquestionably the leadership of this brand of motion pictures, but at the same time assure our city a program of the most comprehensive entertainment we have known in many moons. Arrangements are now under way for making Paramount week locally a most important one this year. Many merchants have already expressed the pledge of heartiest co-operation and the list is growing daily. Gala decorations will adorn the theatre while attractive displays throut out the city will add to the general spirit of the nation's real "movie" week. Everything points to the sixth annual Paramount week eclipsing all its predecessors. L. A. This sensation, according to Quezon, was intended by Governor Wood to cause a reverting of public opinion and to start a serious national conflict among the Philippine people. Furthermore, Quezon alleges, was the governor's policy of usurpation and imperialism is also intended to place Mr. Fernandes, a high official of the Philippine bank, in a false position with the object of discrediting him in the present political campaign. Quezon states that Wood withheld publication of the reports on the condition of the bank made by Messers Wilson and Coates, the former ex-manager of the institution, and the latter a bank expert. The Filipino leader calls for Governor Wood to make these reports public so that the country may see who was really benefitted by the bank and who are still benefitting from it. Quezon concludes his letter with the charge that Wood is also plotting with members of the Democratic party, which political organization is mild in its expressions for independence of the Philippine Islands from the United States. City Commissioner Joseph Koutsky introduced a resolution in the city council demanding an investigation to fix responsibility for the water famine in Omaha. When more businesses here closed today due to the muddy condition of the city water, one city official estimated 20,000 people had been completely thrown out of employment and that the loss to the city would reach $5,000,000. City health inspector Pinto issued a statement declaring Omaha was threatened with an epidemic of typhoid and warned citizens not to drink water under any conditions. A test of city water today showed that the fluid was 43 per cent mud. The first arrest of a "water bootlegger" was made today. Lewis Margolin owner of a tank truck, was charged with commercializing water. Police charge that Margolin canvassed residents of the poorer districts and sold water, taken from a city spring, for five cents a quart. Omaha's street flushers were hauling water from Council Bluffs, Ia., today. The water was transferred to large containers at fire stations through the city where hundreds were in line with all sorts of receptacles to get water. BRITISH PROPOSAL CREATING FURORE LONDON, Aug. 23.—British hopes for a reparations settlement were based today upon the possibility of an allied conference. Premier Poincare's willingness to participate in an allied conference and his evident desire to avoid a breakup of the Anglo-French entente furnished ground for optimism. Premier Baldwin is expected to confer with Lord Derby, secretary of state for war, and Lord Robert Cecil at Aix Le Bains Saturday. British officials resent the declaration of the French that England is making no sacrifices. It is feared in official circles that the French note has not advanced the reparations situation. There is a disposition to believe the French document was intended mainly for home consumption. Premier Baldwin and foreign Secretary Lord Curzon may see M. Poincare in France next week and lay the groundwork for an amicable conference. Full Fashioned Women Will Enjoy Them!
