Omahans were laid off today when many industries, including packing plants, laundries, bakeries, barber shops and restaurants were forced to mend business because of the muddy condition of city water.
City water today was worse than yesterday, it fairly dropping from faucets in chunks of mud.
The entire city today began to feel the effects of being without water. Sickness was reported on the increase.
It was estimated $200,00 in wages had been lost but this was small compared to the thousands of dollars lost by big businesses when machinery and boilers were totally destroyed by the oozy, muddy water clogging the parts.
Several explosions were reported to police.
With trucks loaded with barrels, Omaha's "bootlinggers caravan" descended on the big spring at Elwood Park at 4 a.m. today. Even at that hour a large crowd had gathered to get water. The bootleggers forced the throng away from the spring. A near riot followed. Police were called but the "caravan" had disappeared.
Mayor Dahlman of Omaha, arranged today with Mayor Zurimuhlen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, to have city water hauled from Council Bluffs to Omaha in street sprinklers to be distributed to down town hotels.
City commissioner John Hopkins was to ask city council today for permission to lay 5,000 feet of hose from the waterworks in Council Bluffs across the Missouri River bridge and into Omaha.
Even the flushing of streets was abolished today when city commissioner Dean Noyes declared that the water was too filthy to sprinkle the streets with.
Men and boys with push carts, wagons and flivvera laden with bottles, tins and barrels were coining money today going about the residence districts selling spring water at five cents a quart.
Officials said it may require a week to clean out the main intake basin at the pumping station into which a Missouri River bank tumbled early yesterday.
Dresses made of colored wash material should not be hung in the direct rays of the sun. They will dry as well if hung in the shade where the colors will be less apt to fade or bleach out.
