HOLD GIRL SUSPECT OF BLACKMAIL GANG LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20.—While pretty Edith White of Chicago sobs out her innocence at the city jail today detectives hunted for other members of a suspected gang, believed to have tried to blackmail Milton Levy, former army captain of Denver, Colo. The prisoner is said to have given the names of several young women whose activities in mutting huge rams from innocent men is said to have surprised even the police. Levy told the police today he was victimized on August 4, after giving to young women, one of whom he said was Miss White, a "lift" in his automobile. Both sides have rushed up reinforcements. The Spanish minister of war has ordered every army corps to be held in readiness for field service. General Echague, Spanish commander in chief at Melilla, and Abdel K. Rim leader of the rebels are directing their armies in person. NEEDS SACRAMENTO, Aug. 20.—Total collections of the state government for the 1823-24 fiscal year will aggregate $43,966,353.30, it was announced today by M. D. Lack, secretary of the state board of equalization. The state's revenue will exceed by nearly $4,000,000 the sum which the last legislature directed should be raised for support of the government. The legislature instructed that the state taxes should be so levied as to bring in $40,000,000. The revenues of the state for the year will be collected from electric and street railways, gas and electric companies, telephone and telegraph car, express, insurance companies, national and state banks, and from general franchises. Inheritance and license taxes, fees secretary of state, interest on deposits in banks, punitive and reformatory schools, collections, fees, supreme and appellate court and miscellaneous receipts. REAPPOINT OFFICERS As forecast the present county traffic officers have been re-appointed. Will H. Marsh, director of the state division of motor vehicles approved the nominations of the incumbents. Kingsbury and Jones were remanded to jail in default of $50,000 ball. ARREST HOODLUMS SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 20. Twenty-five youths, from 18 to 21 years, were arraigned in police court today on charges of disturbing the peace. The wholesale arrests are a result of the expressed determination of Chief of Police Daniel O'Brien to rid the city of the hoodlum gangs which recently have been terrorizing and insulting citizens. MEXICO AGREES TO GUARD U.S. INTERESTS WASHINGTON, Aug. 10.—President Coolidge and Secretary Hughes today received from Charles Beecher Warren and John Barton Payne a report on their negotiations in Mexico City looking to the resumption of diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico.
