Miscellaneous MELODRAMA THRILLS AT UNITED THEATER "Where the Trail Divides" proved another winner last night at the United Theatre. It is a melodrama and busy thrills together with a powerful story and much very lively comedy. The play is unusual but in every way is up to the excellent standard set by the Siegel Co. on their very first appearance in this city. The western atmosphere is breezy and each character is well drawn and exceedingly well acted. Mr. Siegel plays the leading role of an educated Indian, and it is a masterful performance. The settings are unique, artistic and absolutely correct. Edna Cecil Daly has more opportunity in this bill than she has had in the last two or three plays and it is needless to say takes advantage of it and again proves herself a real artist. The supporting company leaves nothing to be desired and fits the parts perfectly. "Where the Trail Divides" will be given again to night and tomorrow night, and like the other plays that the Siegel players have given here, should not be missed. Packed houses will undoubtedly be the rule. Scott Enthusiastic Over Sutter-Co. Land Harry E. Scott has just returned from an inspection trip over several thousand acres of land in Sutter-co. He brought back some of the fruits which he has grouped in his office window, attracting much attention. It speaks eloquently of the ground that can produce such mammoth Market Reports FRUIT SALES (Calif. Fruit Exchange) New York: steady Valencia, lower lemons; oranges $4.2 to $6.75, lemons $8.90 to $9. Steel common yielded fractionally to 92 and Baldwin closed at 121%, half a point decline. California Petro, was down % to 31. Studebaker fell one point to 105½%. Union Pacific foil % to 131. Scott has just returned from an inspection trip over several thousand acres of land in Sutter-co. He brought back some of the fruits which he has grouped in his office window, attracting much attention. It speaks eloquently of the ground that can produce such mammoth peaches and White Astrachan apples. Mere pictures might be doubted, but "seeing is believing." Gen. Sutter whose mill gave gold to California rendered his state an even greater service when he planted made peaches a better producer of in Sutter-co its first peach tree and made peaches a better producer of red than the sluices of his famous mill. The peach orchards are a vast not work of props supporting 20 to 25 tons per acre—over 58 acres averaging 22 tons. One of nature's phenomena is the quick maturity of the trees, actually bearing fruit measured in tons the second year while 9 tons at 3 years and 15 tons at 4 years is encouraging to one who appreciates quick returns. Such land cannot help being ideal for other fruits also and the cherry grower swells his bank account over a thousand dollars per acre net from his early fruit. The Solitana seedless grape planted with cherries yield 15 tons while the cherries are coming into bearing. After dehydrating prunes they have 3 tons for $160.00 per ton while 60-acres of Bartlett pears netted $31,000.00 Water for irrigation is far in excess of all needs and is direct from the Feather river while much of the land is sub-irrigated. Mr. Scott has a fine collection of actual photographs as well as the demonstrating fruit exhibit which he gladly shows to any one. Heat prostration is seldom accompanied by loss of consciousness. In places of worship under the Church of England are 31,454 unpaid bellringers. Marden, Fullerton trustee, said this morning. Mr. Marden said, however, that the chief reason for the increase of the tax rate to $1.55 is the recent bond issues. The rate for the general fund is $1, maximum allowed by law, while the 55 cents is for bond interest and redemption. He said that the recent bonds run for 20 years and will be paid sooner than bonds issued years ago to run for 40 years. Mr. Marden said that the falling off in the assessed valuation is due to the closing of certain oil wells, which he said was done not because in some instances there is no oil there, but because of the low price of crude oil, and the fact that Fullerton is not a competitive field. The oil is still there, he said, but is not being pumped out. He says that the valuation from residential and business property has increased. Fullerton's assessed valuation last year was $14,469,450. This year it is $12,189,310. REX INGRAM MOVIE AT UNITED THEATER Rex Ingram, producer of the "Four Horsemen," has a worthy successor to that screen masterpiece in his production of the "Conquering Power" seen last night at the United Theatre. The action is again in France, but this time in a small provincial town, where a story of love and greed is pictured with intense intimacy in an atmosphere of family life. It is the powerful story of Balzac's "Eugenie Grandet." translated to the screen by June Mathis and superbly enacted by a cast that includes beautiful Alice Terry as "Eugenie" Rodolph Valentino as the Parisian dandy who wins her love, Ralph Lewis as Eugenie's miserly old father, and many other well known picture players. It is a picture whose dramatic power and nuance meet. "EVERY ONE A MONEYMAKER" EAST FRONT—corner lot, shade trees and high ground. An exceptional homesite at $2,000. Terms.
