BASEBALL BOXING AMERICAN WOMEN EXPECT VICTORY FOREST HILLS, L. I., Aug. 13.—The American team swept everything before it today when Mrs. Molla Mallory and Miss Helen Wills defeated Mrs. Geraldine Beamish and Mrs. M. C. Clayton in doubles 6-2, 6-2. FOREST HILLS, N. Y., Aug. 13.—The Wightman cup, emblematic of international supremacy in women's tennis, will remain in America for at least one year as a result of the defeat of Mrs. Geraldine Beamish, of England, by Miss Eleanor Goss, American, in the first singles played this afternoon. The scores were 6-2, 0-6, 7-5. The remainder of the international program includes singles matches involving Miss Helen Wills, the California child wonder, and Mrs. K. C. Clayton, of England, and Mrs. Molla Mallory and Miss Kitty McKane, star of the invaders, and a doubles match in which the Wills-Mallory combination will face Mrs. Beamish and Mrs. Clayton. NEW YORK Aug. 15.—The American women expect to say it with requests at Forest Hills today and complete the rout of the invading British begun on Saturday in the opening skirmishes for the Wightman cup, token of suppremacy in international tennis for women. They need only a single victory, in any one of the three singles and one doubles match, scheduled for today and, barring the unforeseen, will do that and more. Simultaneously the national championship in women's singles will be started, with four British representatives, Miss Kitty McKane, Mrs. R. C. Clayton, Mrs. Geraldine Beamish. Tagging All the Bases George H. Ruth, the well known notfielder, not only smote his twenty-ninth home run of the season, but displaced Harry Heilmann for the batting leadership by .002, Heilmann being out of the picture with a spavined arm. The Yanks, however, finished second to Sylvester Johnson and the Tigers, 5 to 2. The Dodgers knocked whatever pennant dreams the Pirates entertained for a row of lavender neckties by winning both games of a double header, 11 to 2 and 6 to 0. The Giants completed their western tour by losing the decision to the Carda 5 to 2, Gearin, a recruit left-hander, being bested by Jess Haines. A six run rally at the expense of Cygnetrose and Robertson in the seventh staked the Senators to 9 to 6 victory over the White Sox. Joe Miller was never known to utter a jest and his demeanor was so grave that friends, in jest, ascribed every new joke to him. Jon Bourke, who has made betless racing a success in Chicago, is in Los Angeles conferring with Dick Ferris on the proposed Culver City race meet. Ferris has been working on the project for some time and has interested Bourke and it now appears that ground will soon be turned to fashion the tracks. There is no sport on earth that appeals to a greater number than good, old-fashioned horse racing. Tommy Milton in the fastest racer going could not get the raise out of the grand stand that Black Bess can when she is coming down the home stretch only a neck ahead. A home run off the bat of Babe Ruth with the bases full can not produce the thrills of a tight finish on the track. A good race meet has its effect on the surrounding country in the way of improving the breeding of horses. All that become interested in racing are interested in better horses. Where there is racing there are always good horses. Our Coast League pennant chase is more interesting. WOOD MANILA, Aug. 13. — Friendship of Filipino veterans of the insurrection toward their former enemies, the Americans, was pledged here today by General Hernandez, one time Aguinaldo lieutenand, in a brief address during annual "Occupation Day" celebration here of the Spanish war veterans. The Huntington Beach Boxing club is going to star Stramaglia, he who jumped into fame by giving Jack Dempsey a black eye, next Friday evening. Stramaglia will be opposed by Joe O'Brien. Stramaglia has made two starts in southern California. He fairly got started when he knocked out Tom King in the first round one night last week, the following evening he knocked out Battling Ortego in the second round. During Harding memorial services here yesterday, General Wood declared that President Harding had instructed him to work for the co-opération of Filipinos and Americans, giving the former constructive leadership. EXPECT 20,000 AT FIRPO GO TONIGHT PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 13—A crowd of at least 20,000 is expected to watch Luis Firpo, the South American man-eater, attempt to do all stuff at one of the local ball paras tonight. The senator will be served one Charley Weineri of New York, a rather tasty morsel, and if he fails to knock the latter out within the scheduled limit of eight rounds, the Argentine's prestige and his drawing power against Jack Dempsey, Sept. 14, may suffer considerably.
