COOLIDGE AT WORK IN WHITE HOUSE By GEORGE E. DURNO (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, Aug. 13.—President Coolidge transacted official business at the White House today for the first time since he bacame the nation's chief executive. Accompanied by Edward T. Clark, his personal secretary, and Charles former Republican state chairman, the president motored from the New Willard Hotel to the executive offices at nine o'clock this morning. Frank W. Stearns, Boston, close personal friend of the president, was the first caller at the executive office. George B. Christian, Jr., secretary to President Harding, remained at the office today to assist the president. While he has resigned, Christian will stay for an extended period to help in clearing up the great pile of detail work which accumulated while he was on the western trip. Under the direction of Secretary Christian and Mrs. Harding, all of President Harding's personal effects were removed Sunday from his desk in the executive offices. One of the first matters to receive the president's attention today was governmental economy, the strongest plank in the platform of the republican party. General Herbert M. Lord, the director of the budget, was to confer with the president during the day to map out the administration's program for paring down federal expenditures. As president Coolidge is committed politically and personally to economy measures, the continuance of the Harding economy program is assured. As a result of week end conferences between the president and attorney general Daugherty, the department of justice today was expected to make known what action is to be taken in connection with the Southern Pacific Central Pacific merger, a matter in which the department has been involved in litigation for some years. An appeal from the decision of the lower court, permitting this combination, is considered likely. Likewise, as a result of a Sun1-day conference, the state department PRESIDENT COOLIDGE PHOTO This photo of Coolidge was taken as he disposed of room in the Capitol August 4. The first official act performed by Calvin Coolidge as thirteenth president of the U.S. was to issue a proclamation setting aside Friday, August 10, as a national day of mourning for President Coolidge. An appeal from the decision of the lower court, permitting this combination, is considered likely. Likewise, as a result of a Sunliday conference, the state department has under consideration the Cuban situation. Hubert Atkins, representing New York sugar interests, called at the Willard Hotel and urged President Coolidge to intervene in Cuba to prevent the confiscation of American-owned properties. A tariff bill, now under consideration in the Cuban legislature Atkins said would make possible the seizure of railroad, port and other properties valued at millions of dollars, in which American sugar interests are heavily interested. This matter has been referred to the state department and Atkins will confer with Secretary Hughes and General Crowder, the American ambassador to Cuba, who is now in the city. Some interest was evident this morning around the temporary hotel "white house" over the statement issued by the Democratic national committee serving notice on President Coolidge that he would be given the "acid test" by the opposition party. The statement declared that the Democratic party "would not" prejudice the new executive; that it was up to him to recommend and put thru the various reforms which the nation was now demanding with good cause, and that he would be classified only in the light of subsequent events." STAR OUT OF DANGER NEW YORK, Aug. 13.—Gloria Swanson, screen star, who was operated on Friday, was reported out of danger today. (Spk)—S. P. Kraemer has decided not to be a candidate for one of the directors of the new sanitary district to be voted on August 28, and it is thought that Arnold, Kraemer will consent to run in his stead. C. R. Farrar also does not wish to be one of the directors and this will leave the list at present time as follows: W. W. Krick, W. C. Cober, R. L. Fourman, Qle Christensen and Arnold Kraemer. While there may be another change in this list before the time comes to vote, an effort is being made to get men who will promise to take the work and stay with it for at least a year because the district does not want to be put to the expense of another election any sooner than can possibly be helped. The first year of this work in the district if it is voted, will be very hard and very trying and if anyone wants on the board or knows of anyone who would be good on the board and would be willing to serve, they should make it known to those interested, because anyone of the mentioned above will be glad to give way to anyone who will take the interest to do the work and do it the way it should be done. Remember the election will be held on August 28 at the Placentia National Bank and you should be there to vote sometime during the day. The leases for the two new store buildings under construction for Joachim Queyrel have been signed by J. R. Wallace and C. E. Halber. The east side store will be occupied by the C. E. Halber Drug Store and the west and somewhat narrowest store will be occupied by J. R. Wallace as a grocery store. The buildings are expected to be completed before the end of August and the less severe are planning to move about the first. The new stores will give both the occupants more space to display their goods and thereby make a more attractive store. Mr. Bever the owner of the vacated store, is out of town on his vacation at present and it is not known just what new business will occupy the "High Cost of Loving" Proves Riot of Fun The delighted audience that attended the United Theatre last night put its stamp of approval on the Siegel company's presentation of that funniest of all dialect comedies, "The High Cost of Loving". No press agent could exaggerate the many humorous complications and milth provoking situations. Nearly every line carries a laugh, and the action is not allowed to lag for even a second. This is by far the cleverest farce yet presented by this capable stock company, and their previous offerings have been way ahead of the ordinary. "The High Cost of Loving" is in a class by itself as a fun maker, and after seeing it, its success is easily understood. Mr. Siegel handles the principal comedy role in his usual finished manner, and as an exponent of the Hebrew dialect, he is a master if ever there was one. Other characters stand out prominently, in fact, every member of this capace company is most at home in their respective roles. The play is prettily mounted and the ladies wear some attractive gowns. So all together "The High Cost of Loving" is quite one of the most enjoyable entertainments that we have ever had in Anaheim. The same bill will be repeated again tonight and tomorrow night. The Siegel company's business has increased to such an extent on each visit, that now it is an assured guarantee that their weekly visits will continue indefinitely, and is certainly something to look forward to each week. Gen. Leonard Wood, saying the Philippine National Bank has been wrecked by maladministration and criminal negligence by American and Filipinos. According to the Independent, the total losses were $65,000,000 in six years. Independent declared that the auditor's report, which was appended to the message, named several prominent Filipinos, including ex-mayor Fernandez, to whose companies several million dollars in bad loans were alleged to have been made. At a joint meeting of nationalists and collectively, numbering about 500 delegates, a resolution was passed approving resignations from the council of the state cabinet. This resolution followed a long speech by President of the Senate Manuel Quezon. The meeting condemned the attitude of Montinola, Sumulong and other democrats. This is a yearly event for the getting together of the growers and their employees. A sumptuous dinner will be served as usual at noon and the afternoon will be devoted to sports. Mrs. Olive Bailey and Miss Minnie Maxwell of Fullerton have gone in Mrs. Bailey's coupe to San Francisco. They plan to be away nearly four weeks, making the trip leisurely and stopping over where the country is most alluring. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Edwardson and family are spending a couple of weeks at East Newport. THREE DROWNED, FIVE INJURED AT SEATTLE SEATTLE, Aug. 13.
