INTEREST IS KEEN IN NEW BUICK CAR The reception to the 1924 Buick, and the interest shown by the public, have proved conclusively that car owners still are looking to the Buick company for better motor cars, says Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co. The 14 new body lines of the Buick, the upholstery and finish of the new cars, etc., are of keen interest to observers, but the mechanical changes even more so. The four wheel brakes, which have been installed on all models, are receiving particular attention from motoring connoisseurs. The car has a specially patented kingpin and universal joint set at such angles that when rounding a corner tie outside front wheel is not affectied by the brake, so that control is easy even tho the brakes have been used to their fullest. The new valve-in-head engine gives 50 per cent more power, according to the manufacturers, and there is a longer wheel base, while automatic lubrication has been exlended to all the major engine parts. Ten of the 14 new models are sixge and four are fours. There are two new models, the double service sedan, as it is called, and a five-passenger brougham. The sedan is in a hard finish black enamel and its upholstery can be readily cleaned, so that it can be used for social as well as business purposes. The brougham is in a brilliant maroon of the sport type. REBUILT BATTERY NOT TRUSTWORTHY "Just as good as a new one" is a statement often made and seldom true. The need is for the good battery, the standard battery for honest construction, but many battery fixers have fallen for the idea that they can build a battery as well, but a lot cheaper than the manufacturer who uses volume production methods and who has the pick of the market for supplies. "The rebuild battery," says A. Bevillard, local Willard service station man, "is often made of parts from discarded batteries which have just enough life in them to get by the purchase date. A few new parts may be added, a new case and a lot of new paint and then the head refrain just as good. The car driver who wants satisfactory battery operation is advised by Bevillard to go to the authorized battery service station representing a standard make of battery. He is then getting more than a battery, he gets a battery with the reputation of a manufacturer who has thousands or millions of dollars invested in plant and equipment behind it. "The battery" says Bevillard "is one part of the car's equipment which now gives little trouble over a considerable period if given proper care. The discovery of threaded rubber insulation by the Willard people has eliminated a lot of former battery troubles. This sort of insulation has greatly reduced the national bill for repairing and recharging batteries and has given the battery unusual durability, greater force to spin the engine and a higher resistance to summer heat and winter cold." Brunswick Red Tube Is Latest Creation Reports of negotiations for the sale of the Brunswick Manufacturing Co.'s tire plant to the Goodrich Tire & Rubber Co. are unfounded, says Clyde Williams of Daniels & Williams, Northern Orange-co distributors. Far from that, the company is preparing to manufacture a new red tube on a scale. This tube will be the finest of the sort ever turned out by the concern. Sales are good, says Williams. Dye Upper Right—Morning Inspection, with Harri Lower Left—Scott sleeping quarters showing Marked improvement in appearance and comfort is apparent in the new line of Dodge Brothers Motor Cars, in the production of which the factory has been gathering momentum since July 1. Hundreds of dealers are now supplied with display cars of the new type, and from every source the factory is receiving reports of enthusiasm approval by the public, according to word received by Charley Mann, Anabeim distributor. While the basic characteristics of the familiar Dodge Brothers cars of recent days are still present, there is an air of distinctiveness that surpasses all previous efforts of this concern to build a moderately priced car of commendable appearance as quality. The wheelbase is a trifle longer. The body is lower and the racer springs changed to semi-elliptical type are underlung, and increased from 45 to 65 inches in length. All the features so popular with the public today are embodied in the design of the complete line, which includes a touring car, roadster, coupe, two types of sedan, and screen side and panel side commercial cars of XLon capacity. All steel bodies—as introduced by Dodge Brothers in their open passenger cars several years ago—are now used for all types. The effect of the longer and lower body and longer wheelbase, combined with the new lines and lower seats, is very fine. According to dealers and others who have driven the new cars, the improvement in riding qualities is no less pronounced than the improvement in general design. The reduction in body height lowers the center of gravity and thereby reduces sidesway, while rebound shocks are effectively dissipated by the improved front and rear springs. The car holds the road easily and gracefully and affords real riding comfort. Westinghouse BATTERIES Harry Riley Visits Orange County Scout Camp Have Distinction; Changes Make for Comfort comfort and leg room. The intrument board is greatly improved in appearance, with instruments grouped on a raised panel and longer lighting switch lever facilitating control of the lights while driving. Head lamps are specially designed to harmonize with the new body lines. A combination caution signal and tail lamp is mounted rigidly on the license plate bracket and conforms with the requirements of all states having lighting regulations. Brake pedal pads are larger and of a design which makes for greater ease and safety. The hand brake lever, like the shifting lever, is moved forward, giving more leg room and making it easier to get in and out. A Yale lock is built into the transmission, making it possible to double-lock the car when idle. The steering wheel is materially improved in appearance and all electrical connections are inside the steering column. The front springs are increased in length and from 1½ to 2 inches in width and built of more leaves of a thinner stock. The rear springs, in addition to being longer, are now semi-elliptic and flat. The front axle is of a design unusually strong. The camber, or tilt of the front wheels, is increased, making steering easier. A new gear ratio of the rear axle gives increased flexibility and adds to the ability of Dodge Brothers cars as hill climbers. In the Type A sedan, the upholstery is the finest grade mohair velvet, and all interior hardware is of distinctive Dodge Brothers design. The business coupe and business sedan are finished in attractive Spanish blue leather. The fiscal year ending July 1 was the most successful in the history of Dodge Brothers, their dealers having marketed approximately 200,000 cars. With the improvements now put into effect, obviously making the car better and more attractive in every way, though still retaining the essential attributes to which the car owes its great popularity, it seems quite evident that this company has not yet reached the maximum of its potentialities, despite the remendous record of the year just closed. WESTINGHOUSE HAS LIGHT CAR BATTERY Owners of light cars who need a battery are recommended by L. H. McGee to the Westinghouse Wubco special, which costs less and has all the Westinghouse features. This battery has the quality of the standard battery. The latter has an oversize plate area as much as 20 per cent larger in common sizes. Plain Dealer Ads Bring Results. Willys Again Controls Willys-Overland Co. Permanent control of the Willys-Overland company, as represented by the block of 739,000 shares of common stock held by the Willys Corporation has definitely passed into the hands of John N. Willys and his friends thrue the decision of Judge Knox in the Federal District court at Buffalo. This large block of common stock for which several bids were entertained by the court, originally belonged, to John N. Willys who built up the Willys-Overland company. It was turned over to the Willys Corporation organized by him in 1918 as one of the assets of that corporation. When the affairs of the Willys Corporation, after the result of the decession following the war became such that a receivership was made necessary in order to liquidate the assets of the corporation and satisfy the creditors, Mr. Willys took the firm stand that the first preferred stockholders should in so far as possible be saved from loss of their investment. These stockholders, numbering about six thousand, hold $15,000,000 par value first preferred stock. The majority of the second preferred stock and of the common stock was held by Mr. Willys. Since the appointment of the receiver approximately 78 per cent of the claims against the Willys have demanded that he be used in lieu of another return tire for Willys. BREAKING RECORDS PLAY FOR BIGELOW California has been talking about record runs for the last three weeks. Not since the days of the old Los Angeles Phoenix road race—the famous "Desert Classic"—have automobile men had so much to talk about on fast runs and rough going. Charles H. Bigelow and his double record from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and on to San Francisco in a stock model Reo Six sport phaeton has provided the "old-timers" with their incentive to talk over the earlier days in the industry and of the records that long since — most of them — have gone by the board. Bigelow has been making road records with his Reo for more than a year and each time he has put over a record it has been through territory more difficult than its predecessor. The round-trip, Los Angeles to Phoenix record of last year was accounted a real performance. Then came Bigelow's run from Salt Lake to Los Angeles—a heart breaking trip across mountain and desert which broke the previous mark just six minutes elapsed time. His next achievement was the run from Los Angeles to Phoenix last March over the Oldfield record route in which the Reo stock touring car clipped many minutes off the time made years before by the "Master Driver". The run from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City in June, in which Bigelow and Dave Fassett beat the best time of the Limited to Sale Lake by several minutes and the automobile mark by 34 minutes, was the most strenuous of Bigelow's recent record runs. His elapsed time of 25 hours, 41 minutes is considered phenomenal by those familiar with conditions along the 833 miles of the route. A few days later Bigelow and Fassett "hopped off" from the Utah capital for San Francisco, and just 28 hours and 29 minutes later arrived in the Bay City. Approximately $2,600,000 in cash was in the treasury together with additional assets, which prior to the decision of Judge Knox included the Willys-Overland common stock, and other securities valued at approximately $1,000,000. In September last year Mr. Willys gave up all personal activities in all other of his business interests and returned to Toledo to devote his entire time to the development of Willys-Overland. The come-back of the Willys Overland during the past few months is the talk of the entire industry. Willys Overland production has climbed back to second place among all the automobile members of the Chamber of Commerce from fourteenth place—last highest point in the history of the company. Production and earnings for the six months of 1923 are in excess of any previous six months' period. Dealers have been almost doubled in number. Overhead cost has been cut to a lower figure than ever before and even at this period when a seasonable lull is generally expected the demand for Willys-Overland cars is greater than ever at any time this year. Four hundred tons of steel will be demanded to manufacture the more than 1,000,000 1924 license plates to be used in California, W. G... McMillan, state purchasing agent, announced this week. The plates would form a continuous band of steel 429 miles long. VALVE IS KEYSTONE OF EFFICIENT MOTOR The main part of a car is the chassis, of the chassis the engine, of the engine the valves. Compression, the heart of motor power, is possible only when the valves fit and function properly, says C. J. Nenno of the big accessories store. The Toledo Steel Products Co. is the largest manufacturer of valves only in the world and its valves have no superior. The Toledo standardized valve has a 100 per cent bond between the head and stem, a weld made possible by the electric welding process originated in this plant. When a new valve is needed, no amount of tinkering with the carburetor will entirely correct the trouble. Nothing but a new valve, and a particular valve for that particular engine will restore its power in smoothness and performance. Recutting, or refacing of valve seats is becoming recognized as a makeshift, only, not a cure. When the cost of a new set of proper valves is contrasted with the cost of re-conditioning and the uncertain results therefrom, there isn't any economy in trying to make over a part that should be entirely replaced. COAST ROAD LINK NEAKER Early construction of the coast highway link between Huntington and Newport beaches was indicated this week, when J. L. McBride, county engineer, inspected the route with W. W. Patch, division engineer, and S. V. Cortelou, assistant. It is said that grant deeds for most of the rights of way have been obtained. The investigation included selection of points where fills must be made and points from which the filling material must be secured.
