U. S. REGISTRATION IS UP 2,400,000 OVER 1922
How big an automobile year this is may be judged from the fact that during the first six months of 1923 there were 686,751 more motor vehicles registered in the United States than during all of 1922.
According to a compilation of license figures made by "Automotive Industries" cars and trucks registered on July 1 totaled 13,048,128. This was 2,440,001 more than appeared on the registration books at the same time a year ago.
How big a part was played by the Pacific coast region in these gains may be seen from the fact that four states of the far-western group exceeded the almost exact 23 per cent total gain—Utah with 38.1, California with 28.7, Washington with 28.6 and Arizona with 25 per cent. Oregon exactly equaled the national gain of 23 per cent. Nevada's gain was 21 and Idaho's, 14.4 per cent.
Based on the estimated population figures for July 1, 1923, there is now no More Cuts In Tire Prices announcement that the Firestone Many, which caused a break in prices a few weeks ago, will no further cuts was received today by F. S. Dunlap of the Nu-Way Tire Co. from the Rubber Ass'n of America. The latter declares further that production now will in use in this country one motor vehicle to every 8.9 persons. On this basis California cars the country with an average of one to 3.9 people, or more than one to a family. In a word, as Automobile Industries puts it, there are enough cars in California to give every man, woman and child a comfortable ride at once without crowding.
New York still leads in total of car and truck registrations though her licences have dropped 10,000 since last January, but California has the most passenger cars registered.
California is in second place, Pennsylvania being her runner up. Both already have more cars registered than they had a year ago.
Ohio is first in numerical gains with 215,000 more cars registered than on July 1 last year; but West Virginia leads the Union from the standpoint of percentage increase with a gain of 40.6 per cent.
Probabilities point to there being only about a ten per cent drop in sales of new passenger cars in July in Southern California as compared with June.
Motor Fax figures for the first 28 days of last month show for the fifteen leading makes, usually responsible for about 88 per cent of the total 9,133 salas as compared with 10,505 for all of June, or 86 per cent of that entire month.

No More Cuts In Tire Prices
Announcement that the Firestone Many, which caused a break in prices a few weeks ago, will no further cuts was received today by F. S. Dunlap of the Nu-Way Tire Co. from the Rubber Ass'n of America. The latter declares further that production now will be curtailed and predicts that the tire situation will be normal again by Oct. 1. Over-production is said to have been responsible for the break in prices along with the Firestone company's reduction.

Auto Club Shows New Million Plates
CAL 23 ★ 30
What is the meaning of that "star" on the new California auto license plates?
Offices of the Auto Club of Southern California have been overwhelmed with inquiries as to the significance of the lone star on the license plates with a numeral following it.
Some interesting investigators have ventured the opinion that this star means anything from the fact the motorist has been "pinched" and is now under a penalty marked by a star, to the fact that it is an auto owned by some famous movie star!
It simply means, point out the Auto Club officials, that California state licenses have passed the million mark and instead of using numerals to indicate the million, the state authorities have substituted a star.
Therefore, when you see a license plate with a star and a numeral "30" after it, or "18," then you know that the real license number is 1,000,030, and so on.

"DON'T DRIVE WITH AN ARMFUL OF BABY"
"Babes in arms" can be an important factor in causing traffic accidents, if motorists don't watch out.
Reports of automobile drivers filed with the Auto Club of Southern California show that scores of motorists are attempting to operate their motor cars while holding one or more babies between them and the steering wheel.
You cannot drive a car and hold a baby or two and do both efficiently, points out the Auto Club. In case of an emergency, the driver is so handicapped by an armful of child that he could not act quickly. In grasping the emergency brake or in swinging a heavy car to avoid an accident. Let the other passengers hold the children, is the general advice offered to the motoring public."
1922 PRODUCTION EQUALLED IN 7 MOS.
When the 8052nd Franklin car made this year passed off the final assembly floor at the Franklin Automobile plant, a mark was reached which equalled the entire Franklin production for the year 1922. Several hundred employees staged a little celebration of their own as the car, gally decorated with placards, was being given its last few finishing touches. Never before in Franklin history has such a high production mark been reached so early in the year. Back in 1920, the company made its 8052nd car for that year on September 15, the earliest previous date on record.

Alden says the Anaheim plan is known all over the United States and is being discussed and copied on an increasingly large scale.
Olds Engine Wonder·Piece of Motor Work
In the model 47 eight-cylinder power plant Oldsmobile has achieved an engineering masterpiece—nothing less, declares a statement to V. V. Vanderlip, local distributor. This most compact of all “eight” engines delivers practically unlimited power and speed without vibration at any rate of travel. Further, its scientific design, plus an extraordinary amplitude of bearing surfaces (perfectly lubricated under pressure), plus 100% quality in the materials and workmanship that enter into its construction, give this engine an amazing measure of endurance. And it is a very economical car to operate.
Of the many outstanding characteristics that distinguish this engine, its great power range stands foremost. While its S. A. E. rating is 68,652 MORE VEHICLES IN CAL.
July Registrations Greater by,
15,000 Than in
July, 1922
Continuing on its upward march, registration of motor vehicles in California during July was greater by 15,828 than in July, 1922, according to an announcement made public today by Will H. Marsh, director of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Revenues jumped $602,303 during the month.
Registration aggregated 68,652 and revenues $252,929.
Marsh announced a payroll $2817 lower than in July a year ago.
Hydrometer Shows
Of the many outstanding characteristics that distinguish this engine, its great power range stands foremost. While its S. A. E. rating is 26.45 horsepower, it actually develops 63.5 h.p at 2710 revolutions. The significance of this is best expressed in terms of performance, as you will discover when its power efficiency at all speeds and under all conditions is demonstrated to you.
FRANKLIN COSTS ONLY $100, 18 YEARS
Among the interesting records uncovered by the Franklin Automobile Company as a part of its 21st Sales Anniversary Celebration is the fact that a 1905 Franklin Runabout is still running and being operated by W. Elliott of East Grand Forks Minn., the original purchaser. It has been driven over 200,000 miles and runs like a clock today, according to the owner. It is still in daily use and Mr. Elliott says he would not part with it at any price inasmuch as no car made today is as good, according to Mr. Elliott's theory. During 18 years, it has cost him less than $100 for repairs.
Hydrometer Shows Battery’s Condition
Watch your hydrometer, when you are not within convenient reach of a service station to do it for you, and if it isn't floating high in the battery solution with all of its neck protruding above the surface, the battery is not fully charged, say Herr and Pulfer of the Exide battery station.
Sometimes the hydrometer barely floats at all that means that the battery starved and must have more juice, more current food and less work until it has been restored to good condition.
