FRANK MAYO COMES TO TURNING POINT It is always an interesting occasion when an actor comes to a turning point in his career. Frank Mayo reaches such a place in "The First Degree," the Universal production coming to the United Theatre tonight. Having established himself as one of the leading portrayers of vigorous, outdoor roles on the screen, in this latest photoplay Mayo enters the field of purely emotional drama. The picture has its exciting moments of physical conflict but these are incidental to the more gripping conflict of emotions in a man's tortured mind. George Pattullo, noted Saturday Evening Post writer, wrote the original story which was adapted to the screen by George Randolph Chester, equally noted as an author. Critics have declared the story to be the most powerful ever written by Pattullo. AT THE HOTEL VALENCIA Maude McLeod, Portland; Fred Andrews, George C. Smith, C. W. Baker, E. E. Werdin, and E. E. ALLENRHU has been tried and tested for years, and really marvelous results have been accomplished in the most severe cases where the suffering and agony was intense and piteous and where the patient was helpless. CALUMPIT MUSTERS IN 2 NEW MEMBERS (By A Comrade) Calumpit Camp No. 26, of the United Spanish War Veterans, met in regular session Tuesday evening, and as the Commander was reported sick, the gavel was taken up by Senior Vice Commander Henry G. Miller. One could tell at once that he is an old hand; acting as presiding officer, altho somewhat unfamiliar with the ritualistic work. The work was carried through with a snap that completed the large amount of work that had accumulated during the past month and the Comrades present enjoyed getting through earlier than ever before. One application was received and balloted on and two new members were mustered into Camp. Geo. V. Area and Benjamin F. Botkin, both of Santa Ana were the two new ones. Acting Commander Miller paid glowing tribute to our departed president, after which the Camp was called to rise and stand at Parade Rest for one minute in silent prayer. The By-Laws committee composed of Adjunct Dixon and Officer of the Day Cooper reported that they had sufficient advertisements to pay for the printing but at the request of the Commander they will not close their books for two weeks more. Junior Vice Commander W. Wintlinger and Comrade Botkin were appointed to act with the Auxiliary.
