BASEBALL BOXING SPORTS THROAT CUTTING IS POPULAR IN GOTHAM (By Davis J. Walsh) (I. N. S. Sports Editor) NEW YORK, Aug. 8—Throat cutting being the local idea of how to carry on a business rivalry, at least as far as the Giants and Yanks are concerned, it is not surprising to learn that Benny Leonard and Johnny Dundee are to frolle in full view of the populace at the Yankee Stadium, Sept. 5. The affair in question not only will harrass the box office men employed by the Yanks, but should prove quite annoying to Tex Rickard, Charley Stoneham and the New York Giants in general. This is killing two men with one set of boxing gloves. The date of the bout is the answer. It comes at such an unseemly juncture as to leave the Leonard-White Melee, with which Rickard and the Giants were dallying, out on a limb. Further, it is altogether possible that it will cut into the publicity for the Dempsey-Firpo entertainment. This latter is an unpardonable front. You may permanently borrow a promoter's watch and he will forgive you—after you return the watch. Tamper with his publicity, however, and he is discovered striking an heroic pose for just anyone within range. At more popular prices the Dundee-Leonard enterprise would fill Central Park, both of the young men having a large acquaintance among barbers, buttonhole makers and other classes of the independent rich. Most of them being able to read with the aid of a forefinger, the publicity will follow as naturally as a buck private, and the Dempsey-Firpo bout, set for nine days later, will suffer. Sports) NEW YORK, A competition sufferer to speak, it is now ty that another olympics known as the world's series, will fail with an enlargement from the field. The Giants today front as a result thru the Reds to tories and the Yankees a mere 12½ games. Both should arrive home on this for their third work in as many years. We can think of pressing. The bthing, like a chrch and eggs. For a prohibitive premium the dollar. New Yorld's series all t can afford to pay. The Giants did trying a salary over send most of their referee in ba forgive you—after you return the watch. Most of them being able to read with the aid of a forefinger, the publicity will follow as naturally as a buck private, and the Dempsey-Firpo bout, set for nine days later, will suffer accordingly. It will be a case of share and share alike in newspaper space and that's no wider than it's narrowest column. "I like the date of the bout" Leonard said today. "If it came after Dempsey's meeting with Firpo, our publicity would be hurt. Now it is the other way around. It should be a great fight." The champion neglected to say that it should be a great crowd also. He has come to have an abiding affection for cash customers, en masse. Tagging All the Bases The Giants hit Luque and Luque hit Stengel, but the former counted in the club standing and the latter did not. Score 5 to 2. It was the fifth straight for the champions over the Reds and the first between Luque and Stengel, the scuffle coming when the Senor retired from the box by request in the eighth. The Phillies made it three out of four by beating the Pirates again, 7 to 5. Williams socking his 29th homer with two on. Manhandling three Senatorial pitchers for 26 hits, the Indians established a season's record by winning 22 to 2. The Brown won a go-as-you-please from the Yanks, 12 to 10, with a six run rally in the sixth deciding issue, if any. WIDOW HOLDS LAST VIGIL WITH DEAD WASHINGTON, Aug. 8.—Mrs. Warren G. Harding, widow of the twenty-ninth president, held a last vigil with her dead this morning before turning his mortal remains over to his countrymen for the impressive public funeral. Arising at 7:45 o'clock, Mrs. Harding had stolen quietly to the east room, where the body of her distinguished husband lay in state. Sitting by his bier, with tear-dimmed eyes, she bowed beneath the burden of her grief. With a last long look at the bier, she turned away to let the White House attaches prepare for the removal of the body to the capitol for the public service. Despite the terrific strain under which she is laboring, Mrs. Harding walked with a firm step this morning. It was reported she had rested well during the night, getting almost seven full hours of sleep. Mrs. Harding remained in the White House from the moment she reached "home" following the long 3000 mile journey across the "avenue of sorrow" until she entered the funeral procession which carried the late president's body to the capitol. CHARGE OFFICER JOINED IN HOLDUP LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8.—Personally supervised by Chief of Police Volimer, an investigation was launched today into the arrest of traffi cofficer E. E. Ward, charged with robbery in connection with the holdup on July 1 of Mike Argo's restaurant on Ord-st. A check was also being made of the record of Peggy Davis, 21, and Jimmy Price as suspected accomplices in the holdup, which netted several hundred dollars. According to the police the trio have been positively identified by Argo as the persons who held him up. PLAYS 18 HOLES OF GOLF IN 61 STROKES VICTORIA, B. C., Aug. 8.—Completing 18 holes of golf at the Victoria Golf Club yesterday in 61 strokes, seven under par, Phil Taylor, open golf champion of the Pacific Northwest, is believed to have established a world's record. He required 23 to go out and came home in the remarkable score of 28. CALIFORNIA HOTEL FULLERTON H. W. Truesdell, Rosemead; C. A. O'Connor, San Francisco; J. E. Walie, Berkeley; and Evelyn Meis, Sioux City. REVOLT IN GREECE VIENNA, Aug. 8.—A dispatch from Trieste today reported that revolution and civil war are threatened in Greece. It is feared cavalry may march upon Salonika and seize the city. Demonstrations by workers against the high living costs are taking place at Athens, Salonika and elsewhere. But, happily, the chiropractor can relieve your worries, if you suffer from this dreaded disease, as his science eliminates the cause of it. "Your Health Our Aim" DR. JOSEPH H. BALL By DAVIS J. WALSH (I. N. S. Sports Editor) NEW YORK, Aug. 8.—With all competition suffering a bad rally, so to speak, it is now a virtual certainty that another of those abominations, known as an all-Mannattan world’s series, will be played this fall with an enlarged bank note fuller-ing from the flag pole in center field. The Glants today are 5½ games in front as a result of running attack thru the Reds to five straight victories and the Yanks are leading by a mere 12½ game margin. Both should and probably will come home on the out and qualify for their third world’s series meeting in as many years. We can think of nothing more depressing. The business, for one thing, is like a chronic diet of bacon and eggs. For another, I puts a prohibitive premium on the power of the dollar. New York can have the world’s series all to itself because it can afford to pay for the privilege. The Glants and the Yanks are carrying a salary overhead that would send most of their competitors before a referee in bankruptcy. However, so far as John McGraw is concerned, credit must be given for having developed second string material to the highest degree. He lost his captain and shortstop, Dave Benecroft, in mid-season, and immediately replaced with Travis Jackson, at extremely young man who more than made good. Groh is also out with injuries, but Maguire, a collegian, has made the riffle. HEAR 4 CASES IN BUDGET AMENDMENT LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8.—Whether various state departments will be permitted to continue the practice of turning fees collected into their own fund, from which they may later draw for current expenses, or whether all fees collected must be turned into a general state fund and expenses paid by an appropriation, was to be decided by the state supreme court here today, which was to hear four cases growing out of the budget amendment, passed at the last general election. The fundamental principle involved in the actions is whether a department which is being operated on a paying basis shall be permitted to use the excess profits for enlargement and improvement of its own department or shall be forced to assist in the support of other departments which are not on a paying basis. The four cases set for hearing today were: State Railroad Commission vs. Ray L. Riley, controller of the state of California; Will C. Wood, State Superintendent of Public Instruction; vs. Riley; Western Shore Lumber Company vs. Riley and Edwin T. Kelser, real estate commissioner, vs. State Board of Control. JIM ALAMO, ACTOR, JUMPS $2000 BAIL Jim Alamo, alias Jim Davis, vaudeville actor of Los Angeles, jumped his ball today and did not appear before Superior Judge F. M. Jamison at Santa Ana. Alamo was charged with a felony carrying a penalty of one to 50 years and involving a Santa Ana girl. Two other charges, one of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and the other of conspiracy, had been dismissed by Justice J. B. Cox at Santa Ana, following the examinations. Alamos bail was only $2,000. A friend put up the money. He will be sought at once by the county authorities. Alamo’s bail was only $2,000. A Clair Woolwine, Geisler and Ball of Los Angeles. The girl again was to have been the principal witness against him. It had been reported that Alamo would fight the charge to the limit. CONGRESSMEN IN SAN DIEGO TODAY SAN DIEGO, Aug. 8.—Congressmen on a junket trip of inspection on the Pacific coast were guests at Rockwell flying field and the naval air station today. Their transport, the Chaumont, is scheduled to sail at midnight for San Pedro, conveyed by the cruiser Seattle, flagship of Commander in Chief Admiral Robert E. Coontz. "The trip of these congressmen and naval technicians will be of great value in deciding how and where the nation's money shall be spent," Admiral Coontz said today. "They will be able most intelligently to recommend and advise at the joint army and navy board now functioning under General Persaing as chairman. "The day of the pork barrel is past. No longer is it possible for a congressman to ask and receive an appropriation for a project in his district for patronage. Unless there is the highest merit in the expenditure no award can now possibly get thru." The Chaumont will arrive at San Francisco on August 12. She will spend four days in the bay cities, two days at Astoria and five days in Puget sound, it was announced. Over 100 houses were recently moved from Jennings, Michigan, to Cadillac, Michigan, a distance of 11 miles.
