HINT SISLER WILL BE BROWN MANAGER
By DAVIS J. WALSH
1 N. S. Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Aug. 8.—The latest whisper, right off the back stairs, is that George Sisler will take charge of the Browns, supplanting Lee Pohl in actuality, if not in name, as soon as the club returns. This report is common gossip around temporary headquarters of the Browns here and the constant repetition has cause it to be accepted as fact.
The same story claims that Sisler will not attempt to resume active ball playing this season, but will work out with the club in pre-game practice and direct its activities from the bench. Meantime, Pohl is supposed to remain about the premises, saying nothing with his usual facility.
At the end of the season, it is alleged, Fohl is to be wafted gently but firmly out and Sisler appointed manager of the club.
So much for that.
Part of the sad tale has it that Sisler wants to resume playing when the Yankees appear in St. Louis in the immediate future, but that physicians in charge of the case have made walnuts on the idea.
They grant that Sisler's impaired vision has improved to the extent that he is able to play golf but would be far worse if he attempts to hurry his recovery by premature return to baseball. It is their intention that Sigler be kept out of the game until next season. That stand is said to have been accepted by Phil Ball of the club.

Out of respect for the dead president the two major leagues did not play Friday and will not play on one day of the burial which will take place August 19. President Harding was quite interested in the sports. He was very fond of golfing and fishing and was interested in football and baseball.
President Wilson before him had little time to spend on sports and never appeared to keep in touch with the sport world. Harding kept well posted in all lines of the sporting world, and it is natural that all great sporting activities pay him a tribute.
Recent reports are very possible for a championship fight between the border. Coffroth is talking in a real business like way and apparently the deal will go through. Coffroth announced that Jack Kearns is favorable to a Dempsey scrap in Tina Juana.
Coffroth has hopes of landing Harry Wills as the second man in the ring. Coffroth usually gets that which he goes after and maybe he will be able to land the Wills-Dempsey affair.
Such a fight would bring a great gathering of eastern sportsmen into our Southern California. While the fight would be held in Mexico, California would come in for a lot of advertisement and we will bet own hat that would not be frosty advertising like Shelby received. With Coffroth at the wheel it would be a grand success.
The Coast League owners are now planning the organization of an 8-club class D league in Southern California. This new league will act as a pasture to turn promising talent into.
The venturer is not expected to bring financial profits if it pays its way the promoters will be tickled to death. The real return will be from the development of the young players. Some of the cities mentioned as homes of the clubs are San Diego; San Bernardino, Long Beach, Pasadena and Sawtelle. Anaheim and Fullerton might club together and support a team.
In our little town the young ladies must have entered into a contest to see who could come out with the loudest shoes and stockings. The proceeded with this test.

In our little town the young ladies must have entered into a contest to see who could come out with the loudest shoes and stockings. The first to come out was red, so red that we thought the whole town was on fire when first they appeared on the street.
Then there was a display of many shades, but recently a green pair has appeared. The green is as green as alfalfa appears to be when growing on white walls. Travelers passing through our town, when those shoes and stockings are on display, try to pick four leaf clovers off the white cement side walks. Anyway, the green is a rest for the eyes after the glare of the flaming red.

ANAHEIM WINS, 8-4 FOR SO. CAL. TITLE
Anaheim Elks, for the fourth consecutive year, yesterday won the So. Cal. leadership in the Elks State Baseball league, by defeating their old time rivals from Pasadena on the local high school field to the tune of 8 to 4. The largest crowd of the season was on hand.
Anaheim will play the northern champions for the state title of California. Elks convention in Eureka the first of October.
An unusual feature of the game when Umpire Daly announced after the third inning: "Out of respect for our late president, Warren G. Harding the play will be suspended for three minutes," with heads bared, the vast crowd stood in silent meditation.
Lefty Manker who started on the mound for Ury's tribe, was handed an impressive reception, Pendleton Buster and Glen Callan and Art Ramage punching out base hits that resulted in the home ferres chalking up four runs. At this stage of the game Manager Ury relieved Manker, substituting Fred Nettles, who arrived in town yesterday morning.
Since Nettles was not eligible for play in the Elks league Anaheim proceeded with the game under protest.
Harry Hughes pitched his usual brand of ball, and was given enough offensive and defensive strength to assure victory. Archie Hawkins came through with three blows which played no small part in Anaheim's scoring. On the defensive Glen Callan was the big gun, handling several difficult chances in the outfield in faultless style.

OFFICERS SEEKING "TRUNK BANDIT"
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6.—An attempt to rob the American Railway Express Co. offices at Pasadena of $500,000 in valuables by Charles Descheneau, famous "trunk bandit," recently released from San Quentin prison, was unknowingly frustrated by employees of the company and three of the five members of the "trunk bandits" gang have been arrested while search is being made for Descheneau, it was revealed today.
Detectives have been rounding up the gang for a month and Descheneau was "tipped" of the search and "skipped," the police say.
Descheneau was arrested three years ago by detectives in a Hollywood warehouse where he had concealed himself in a trunk which was shipped into the vaults of the Hollywood Wood House Co. and for which robbery Descheneau served over three years in the penitentiary.
Descheneau's latest bandit coup is said to have started here last July 12, when two members of his gang shipped a box which they said contained an old valuable French clock by express to Pasadena. It was later learned the box contained Descheneau and a small supply of food.
