CLAIM LOWRY IN SEVERAL SCRAPES LOG ANGELES, Aug. 6.—Aided by Fred Wagner, prominent auto racing official, investigation of the strange past of Frank Lowry nationally known clubman and sportsman, now in the general hospital suffering a broken leg, sustained, the police say, when he fled from a building after attempting to open a safe, was speeded up today. Lowry, unmindful of the pleas of his friends to tell what he can of himself, remained silent as investigators declared unless he speaks to the contrary they may prove him responsible for many mysterious robberies throut the country. Officecrime claim they have traced his past and found: In Minneapolis in 1916, Lowry was arrested as a burghar and was given five years probation. In New York after a running battle, he was arrested. The battle ended when he was clubbed at the grand central station. That was less than a year ago, and his friends secured his release on promise of good behavior. Cliff Durant, auto maker, continued today seeking permission to have an operation performed on Lowry to remove a mental disorder which is said to be responsible for his dual personality. OPPOSITION FADES TO NEW STATE ACT Opposition to the appointment of Orange County traffic officers by Will H. Marsh, director of the Division of Motor Vehicles has faded and the contract with the state under the new motor vehicle act has been signed or will be shortly. Disfriet Attorney A. P. Nelson, who regarded the new act as unconstitu- TEACHER$ ENROLL FROM ALL OVER U. S. In a newspaper recently received from her home town, Ashville, N. C., Mrs. N. F. Ballou read an interesting item on the growth of the teacher's training school there, in which she has several cousins and other relatives. Mrs. Ballou and her husband are of old Southern families and keep in touch with their former home, although they have been away several years. The school enrollment contains names from as far north as Alaska; south as Cuba; west as the Pacific and of course many in the east. The total number is 1500., and a teachers' club in the locality contains 900 names. Mrs. Ballou comes to the defense of southern schools which are sometimes bailed "slow" with this proof of up-to-date methods from just one town. DEBATE METHOD OF KILLING SQUIRRELS Whether the county is going to force the O'Neill ranch, which covers parts of three counties and other ranches to poison squirrels or kill the animals in their own way was the subject of a lively debate today between the ranch representatives and District Attorney A. P. Nelson. The Orange county ranches lie between El Toro and Capistrano. The law says the squirrels must be killed by poisoning, and the county has given the ranches 15 days, beginning next Monday, to do the work, according to one of the O'Neill ranch foremen. The latter contended, however, that doves and quail, to say nothing about rabbits—which aren't protected by the game laws any more—are poisoned along with the squirrels. The O'Neill foreman declared that poison wouldn't be used, regardless of the law. NEW TO FOR SALE—While the canceled tubs $24.
