LA HABRA'S BIG PAVING CONTRACT TO START SOON George R. Curtis yesterday signed the contract for LaHabra's $205,000 paying program. Work, which includes the widening of Central avenue and many of the other principal streets connecting with it, will begin very shortly. Asphalt is the material. Further improvements are expected ultimately to follow when the community is incorporated. Its petition will be heard on Aug. 21, by the Board of Supervisors. The work of graveling the Ball road eastward from Placentia avenue is finished. Sunkist avenue from the Ball road to Wagner avenue now is being graveled for the first time. Today, in preparation for the heavy traffic on Sunday, the county engineer and surveyor, on instructions from the board of supervisors will finish widening with asphalt the intersection at Olive. The improvement is in line with the building improvements in the town and will help to prevent future jams. On Thursday the work of pouring concrete on the new section of the Placentia road from the Katella road to the state highway was finished. The concrete will have to cure for three weeks. The road is open between the Katella and Ball roads. Within two weeks Maassick Pros. will start on the paving of the Olive-Richfield road south to the Santa Ana canyon. Garden Grove road southward to the end of Fifth street, Santa Ana, has been closed and the paving with concrete will start within 10 days. The asphalting of Rio Vista street east of Anaheim will start on Monday. There is 3300 feet of work which will extend from the Anaheim-Olive road to North street. The graveling and grading are all done. A mile and one-half of the Santa Ana Canyon-Richfield road has been completed and is open to traffic. WORTHMORE TRACT Dodge Bros. Erect New Assembly Building An immense new assembly building, duplicating the present structure in size, is announced by Dodge Brothers as the principal unit of the 1923 expansion program says Chas Mann, local distributor. The building is six stories high, 1,000 feet long and 75 feet wide with more than one-half million square feet of floor space. Construction work which started some months ago is now nearly completed. The new assembly building, paralleling the old structure, is just across the street which formally marked the boundary line of the great Dodge Brothers factories. Factory executives would not comment on the number of additional cars contemplated in this extensive addition, but it is believed that the immediate him is a capacity of 1,000 cars a day. In the face of the greatly oversold condition which prevailed throughout the entire year just past, it is not unreasonable to assume that this number mentioned could be absorbed easily by Dodge Brothers dealers. Other units of the expansion program are the new cyanide building, a million dollar addition to the power house, and a mammoth new closed body building. The latter is completed, several floors having been occupied for some time. It is estimated that the total investment represented by these additions, in the buildings alone, will reach $5,000,000. While this unit is an enormous building in itself, it is in reality only half a building. The other half was completed two years ago. Taken as a whole the building is one of the largest single factory units in the world, with a floor area of a million square feet. It will be devoted entirely to the production of all steel bodies—a type of construction originated by and for Dodge Brothers. Nothing looks sadder these days than a coal dealer wondering if the winter really has none. Diamonds are beautiful chiefly because you can't get them. For months gossip of what Buick would do on August 1st has been prevalent and often solemnly asserted by the wisecraes as "on good authority." Yet so little of it proves true, and so many complete surprises characterize these cars, that Buick is to be congratulated on keeping its secret so well. There is no question that those Buick cars will be hailed as a substantial advance in automotive engineering, but it will be noted at the same time. That the new features are developments rather than innovations, evolutionary rather than revolutionary and consistent throughout with those Buick fundamental principles that have endured through twenty years of Buick manufacture. With fifty per cent more power claimed for its famous valve-in-head six cylinder engine, its successful external brakes extended to four wheels in both sixes and fours, a specially designed carburetor that is heralded as a wonder, and literally dozens of other developments, major and minor. Buick proves that its engineering staff has been very much "on the job." The thousands who are certain to see these cars in the leading centers this week—and very soon in the showrooms of all Buick dealers—will first observe a change in body lines, undoubtedly influenced to a degree by recent refinements in foreign design. Thus a more modish appearance, even than the 1923 Buick, has been accomplished by a departure in radiator and hood contour on both open and closed bodies. This applies to both the six and four cylinder models, of which there are fourteen body styles. Exterior features noted at first glance are the new head lamps, nickelied radiator on the sides, water-tank hood hinge, open hood support, tight hood hinge, open hood support, newly designed crown fenders, a more effective weather-proof wind-shield strip, operating instruments conforming in design to the headlamp flush ventilators near rear. Starting from Los Angeles at midnight a stock Reo seven-passenger touring car nosed eastward recently. Just twenty one hours and eighteen minutes later the same car was in Phoenix, Arizona and the existing record had been lowered by one hour and twenty-six minutes. The distance is 571 miles. Barney Oldfield, who won his fame as the world's master driver in the Los Angeles to Phoenix event of ten years ago, had previously held the record of 22 hours, 44 minutes. This was made in a stripped racing car under road racing conditions. The route was over the highway to Victoriaville, then across the desert to Needles, and through the mountains of northwestern Arizona by the way of Kingsman, Selligman, Prescott, Wickenburg, and Hot Springs Junction, into Phoenix. In sharp contrast with the powerful Reo touring car which scored this record time, fully equipped with top and windshield and carrying 4 passengers and their baggage, is the Reo the drivers of the car used as they chartered a race course 15 high speed was attempted only after California state line was crossed and good roads were left behind. On the desert roads speeds as high as 70 miles per hour were made. Since the purpose of the run was to bring to light any possible structural weakness in Reo such terrible punishment as this was sought, rather than speed records over smooth roads. Average speed from Los Angeles to Needles was only 32 miles per hour. The last stretch of the road, from Wickenburg to Phoenix was negotiated in 2 hours and 26 minutes by the Reo. A fast train requires 2 hours and 45 minutes for the same route. Driver Bigelow who brought the Reo into Phoenix, and Newspaper representatives accompanying him, declare that no mechanical trouble of any kind was encountered. Two stops were made because of tire punctures but no time was lost even for adjustments on the car itself. No weakness was found in an examination of the Reo at the end of the run. The six cylinder valve-in-head engine, which has probably brought more enduring fame to Buick than any other unit of its construction, has been so re-designed that it actually yields 50 per cent more power and a speed of 60 to 70 miles an hour. It has forced feed lubrication, removable heads, larger valves, heavier crank and cam shafts, greater piston displacement and a new Marvel carburetor that includes a simple dash adjustment for economy, regardless of weather or kind of gasoline employed. The extension to all four wheels of the highly successful Buick external brakes is a feature that, it is announced, has been in process of development for a period of years and recently subjected to more than 150,000 miles of hard and varied road tests. These brakes enable the car to be brought to a standstill much more quickly and smoothly thus affording an added factor of safety inastimable in its advantages. The brakes are operated by a light pressure on the foot pedal and the mechanism is both simple and ingenious. The factory organization gives its complete approval to this feature as perfected and in no sense experimental. Another outstanding factor is the improved lubrication of the engine. There are new cup-top push rods and the rocker arms, valve stems and springs, connecting rod bearings are all automatically lubricated. The foregoing are merely "the high spots" in the 1924 Buick, the stripped racing car under road racing conditions. HUSBAND WHIPPED HER HUNDRED TIMES * BINGHAMTON, N. Y. Aug. 3. — "He whipped me one hundred times in less than five years!" This, in substance, was the accusation made by Mrs. Ruth Phillips, of the village of Edwardsville, against her husband, Edison Phillips, in an action which has resulted in the issuance to her of a divorce decree. Mrs. Phillips, young and appealing, declared that the indignities of her husband began with the abuse of her mother. After they were married in 1917 they went to live at the mother's home, and it was because of the young husband's treatment of the old woman that they were obliged to leave, she said. They then went to live with a sister of Phillips. There Phillips—not once, but month in and month out—flogged his wife, she alleged. One time he beat her into unconsciousness, she told the court. Another time he drove her and their baby into a bitter snowstorm. That night he came home at 11 o'clock and because his wife had been unable to obtain coal, flew into a rage and forced her out into the tempest. She had been ill, but she struggled through the snow, carrying her baby, to the home of her sister. Thru an error, on account of the change of program, a notice was put in the afternoon papers yesterday saying that the plenie had been postponed. The families attending will take food and other things as was originally planned, because people have to eat. Adjutant Chas. E. Dixon has received a short history of Duffield's Brigade, composed of the Ninth Mass., 33rd and 34th Mich., Vol. Infantry. This organization will hold a silver anniversary reunion at Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 12, 1923.
