"DON'T GET SCARED"
FANS, OVER BIG BEAR
There is a peculiar thrill that starts at one end of the spine and chases itself to the other end and when a nature-lover hears the word "Mountains" its ring is music to his ears, and broad vistas, tremendous heights and pine-clad slopes reveal themselves to his mind's eye.
But in fact the word "Mountain" is real only to the insignificant animals and humans walking, riding or flying about the earth's surface. To a Diety, ennured a million miles away, this earth is as round and smooth as a billiard ball. Even the highest mountain in the world or the deepest canyon, fails to so much as make a scratch on its polished surface.
The moral of this is: "Don't believe all you hear—so see for yourself". There is so much information being passed regarding the San Bernardino Mountain roads that the most of it has become mis-information. The experience of Charles H. Holdson in driving the N-Durance Essex over these roads once every day for 30 consecutive days, has taught the difference between what is reported, and what is found to be the truth.
If it is easy for the Essex to make a round trip a day for 30 consecutive days from Los Angeles to Big Bear via Arrowhead, what pleasure could be derived from this trip taken in a leisurely manner.

Separators Important Feature of Batteries
Separators, more than any other feature of battery construction, have been the subject of discussion and controversy. Many extravagant claims have been made respecting the virtues of various types, says L. H. McGee, exclusive distributor in Anaheim and vicinity.
With the entire field from which to choose, Westinghouse engineers were able to make their decision with all the facts before them. They have tested every type for life, resistance, and insulating qualities. As a result of their findings they selected the express wood separator as the most satisfactory. Should a superior separator ever be developed, it will be utilized in the Westinghouse Battery.
GOODYEAR TIRE PRICES SLASHED
One of the largest price slashes on tires ever announced is that of the Goodyear, which now is being offered at 20 per cent off by C. J. Nenno's big accessories store.
This reduction is general and does not apply merely to certain less desirable lines.
The Goodyear, with its new treads, is coming to be the standard equipment on many of the finest cars turned out, and Nenno regards this as an unusual opportunity for the public to fill their tire needs.

A Manufactured Product—NOT Assembled
THE reason why the Mighty Speed Wagon sells for such a moderate price is perfectly clear when you stop to consider that the Speed Wagon represents but one manufacturing profit.
All of the vital parts of the Speed Wagon are made in the big Reo shops under Reo management. Reo methods of precision, and according to Reo's exacting standards.
Because there can be but one profit in the Speed Wagon, its selling price is lower than would be possible otherwise. And because the Speed Wagon is built to a single standard of quality and uniformity, its value is many times greater than its price would imply.

FORD 1923 OUTPUT
1,800,000 VEHICLES
A total of 1,050,185 automotive products were built by various divisions of the Ford Motor Company during the first six months of the present year, according to figures just compiled.
The output for the half year was as follows:
Ford cars and trucks, domestic and foreign, 941,245; Canada 46,871; Fordson tractors, 58,557, and Lincoln cars 2,512.
A new monthly record for production was established by the domestic assembly plants in June with a total of 175,000 Ford cars and trucks, exceeding the output of May by nearly 5,000.
New production marks have been set up almost daily since January, but there hasn't been a time when manufacturers even approximated the demand.
With production increasing in an endeavor to meet the demand, it is expected that the company will finish the year with a total approx-imately 1,800,000 Ford cars and trucks.
The demand for Ford trucks and light delivery cars is particularly optimistic since it reflects the attentive of the general prosperity, farmers, toward expansion and the greater efficiency. Sales of Ford trucks are more than double those of last year, which indicates the extent of the general prosperity.

Surf-Boarding Contest At Balboa Sunday
Sunday afternoon at Balboa a unique exhibition of surf-boarding will be given under the auspices of the Balboa Chamber of Commerce, Ernie Peck Elmer Judd and the latters' wife, all professional performers of San Diego, will give a duplicate of their performance given two weeks ago at Coronado Teen City, an exhibition of which they received many columns of attention in the San Diego Press. In fact they promise to put on even a better show at Balboa, as they have perfected a new stunt in the last two weeks.
Surf-boarding was introduced in Southern California a year ago by Duke Kahnamoku. It consists of riding a regulation Hawlian surf board, nine feet long and weighing 50 pounds, behind a fast motor boat The sport differs from aquaplaning however, in that no tow lines is attached to the board. The tow line must be held by the rider, and only those who have equaplanced can appreciate the pull on such a line that must be met by the rider in addition to performing his stunts. One of Ernie Peck, who stands on a can-formed by the San Diego trio is that of Ernie Peck, who stands one canvas camp stool which is placed on the surf board, with his arms outstretched, and holding the tow line in his teeth.
In addition to the surf-boarding exhibition, which will start at 2:15 p.m., there will be held the First Annual Aquaplane Championship contest on Newport Bay. This event is open to all amateur athletes and there are three prizes; $25.00 $15.00 and $10.00. This will give the boys of Orange County a chance to ascertain who is the best aquaplane rider. Entries for the contest must be in the hands of Ross Greesley at Balboa Pavilion, or in Post Box 512, Balboa, on Saturday.
BOARD TO DISCUSS HOSPITAL OIL LEASING
(By International News Service)
SACRAMENTO, July 23.—Preparatory id making plans for leasing a bearing property included in the New Walk State Hospital site, George Radcliff, chairman of the Storm Board of Control, Attorney General U.S. Webb and Surveyor General S. Kingbury, will hold a conference here in the near future to discuss preliminary negotiations, it was announced today by Kingsbury.
The three officials are constituting a special committee to care for leasing oil bearing state property under a law passed by the last legislature.
Under the new measure the state is authorized to lease lands believe to contain oil deposits at a figure determined by the committee three.
Preliminary examinations of the Norwalk property, which is situated in the Santa Fe Springs district, indicate that the land is rich in deposits and the proceeds of the lease will materially swell the state revenue, according to estimates.
When the state purchased the Norwalk site several years ago the Board of O'Control was severely criticized in investing in the land, the content being that it was swamp land utterly worthless for a hospital anything else. According to prescriptions the royalties which the state will receive for a one year lease will exceed the original price of the land.

PARA-BELL TIRES
Chicago isn't the only city where taxis are using Para-Bell tires. Los Angeles is doing it too. Roy Menendez of the Reliable Tire Co., local distributors, declared. And it's again Checker Taxi Company.
The taxi concern writes the manufacturers that "the many cord tires of your manufacture placed on test on our cabs in this city have proven the most economical tire equipment this company has ever purchased."
The Para Bell cords have given the taxi company an average of 2,000 miles more service than any product it has used before, which constitutes all the standard makes. "It is our intention to recommend the use of your tires exclusively on our cabs in the future," says the company.
The company, on assurance from the manufacturers that the quality of the tires will be maintained, ordered 1,000 of the 4,41-2 and 5-inch cords.
Overheating Battery Is Danger these Days
Hot weather, just like extremely cold weather, is a danger period in the life of any storage battery unless the proper care is given it. So warns A. Bevillard, local Willard service station dealer. Summer weather is probably the most dangerous time the battery must pass through because the automobile is used more during this period. This is the time when overheating a battery is liable to happen.
Motorists as an average are prone to forget or neglect keeping the battery filled with pure distilled water in hot weather. Evaporation of the water in the solution in the battery during hot weather is rapid. If the level of the water is permitted to reach a point below the tops of the plates, the upper portion is left exposed and useless. The covered portion of the plates are then obliged to assume the extra burden of the unequal portion. This causes rapid overhealing and damage not seen at the time, but which results in considerable expense later.
When undercharged for some time plates become hardened and offer greater resistance to the charging current.
Periodic inspection of your battery's condition during hot summer weather by a battery service station is about the best sort of trouble insurance you can carry, concludes Mr. Bevillard.

STILL WANT EXTRA CONGRESS SESSION
DES MOINES, July 28.—The fight of progressives for the extra session of congress is far from abandoned. Senator Smith W. Brookhart said today as he started for an old fashioned county meeting where he was to address farmers much after the fashion in which he toured the state in his pre-election trips.
"With President Harding back on United States soil proper, he may change his mind about the necessity of calling an extra session of congress." Brookhart declared with emphasis. Secretary McNary of Oregon is going to take up the matter with the president today. I believe that President Harding will be compelled to listen to reason. Conditions demand an extra session.
