NEW RECORD THIS MONTH PREDICTED
Car Sales Heavy in Certain Sections; Half Year's Total
Another new high sales record in California for the month of July is predicted by automobile distributors. They thought that the record established in May would force June business down, but that proved to be wrong. June sales were only eight and a half per cent behind the May sales which was the greatest month in the history of the business.
July will exceed June, declare the dealers in certain quarters. The sales have shown a great strengthening so far this month and the first half proved that the slump which AUTO TRADES TO SEEK NEW MEMBERS Efforts to bring the Orange County Auto Trades Ass'n back to its former activity began this week, with the opening of a campaign for members.

The next meeting will be held in Santa Ana on Aug. 17.
YOSEMITE MASTERED EASILY BY THIS CAR
The performance of his Buick touring sedan in the Sierras and elsewhere is delighting E. J. Hartung of Anaheim who writes Art Steward the foreman of the Anaheim Auto Co.'s service department from Yosemite:
"Am writing this on running board of car, hence excuse the scribble. We drove to Fresno the first day and pitched camp here the next. Experienced no difficulty with car and am very much pleased with the performance so far, as compared to other cars which I have driven.

July will exceed June, declare the dealers in certain quarters. The sales have shown a great strengthening so far this month and the first half proved that the slump which was expected in mid-summer did not materialise.
California's passenger car sales in the first half of this year according to officials reached 114,745 as compared with 66,274 during the first six months of 1922, an increase of 47,471, representing a gain of 73 per cent.
Southern California accounted for 65,850 of them, a gain of 29,364 or 80 per cent over the corresponding period last year. Northern California passenger car sales were 48.895 an increase of 19,154 or 64 per cent.
According to reports presented to the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce directors at their July meeting, which was held this month at Buffalo, a total of 2,029,000 cars and trucks were built in the United States during the first half of this year.
This is an increase of 47 per cent over 1922, when the output for the first six months was 1,164,000.
June production was about 372,000, which is a decrease of only 5 1-2 per cent from May.
"The industry is well pleased with the excellent showing made in June," said Colonel Clifton, president of the Chamber.
Expect a seasonal decline due to the long series of record production months this year. The market is holding up remarkably well, however, as the June total shows.
"This exceptional demand for motor transportation is based on sound economic conditions."
"Highways are being built at the rate of 20,000 miles a year."
"Suburban home areas are being rapidly developed."
"General business conditions are sound and with cars selling at their very low prices, it is natural to expect that the public will be in the market."
"The industry is expecting that the usual seasonal recession will be felt during the next six months. On the average 56 percent of cars, and 52 per cent of trucks are made in the first half of the year, although this percentage varies from year to year."
SURMOUNTS SIERRAS ON REPAIRLESS TRIP
M. M. Sanford of Placentia who has just returned from a trip of 1568 miles in one of the late models of the Dodge car with three passengers and a heavy camping equipment, is convinced that when it comes to roughing it on the mountain roads, the Dodge is about the right car to have. The only trouble he had was a puncture.
Sanford used only a gallon of oil and got 20.1-2 miles per gallon of gasoline.
He crossed the Sierra Nevada mountains at Oroville, then to Quincy, east and slightly north; on to the lake region, Truckee, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Gardnerville, Bridgeport, Pomona Lake, Bishop Big Pine, Independence, Mojave, Mint Canyon, Saugus and home.
It was nothing but mountain work after leaving Oroville.
RALLY OF NEBRASKANS
Ali who ever lived in Nebraska are called to meet under the auspices of the Nebraska Association of Southern California all day, Saturday, August 4, in Bixby Park, Long Beach.
Am writing this on running board of car, hence excuse the scribble. We drove to Fresno the first day and pitched camp here the next. Experienced no difficulty with car and am very much pleased with the performance so far, as compared to other cars which I have driven.
"I offered the valves and generator every 125 miles on account of the fast driving and find that I have made no mistake.
"The roads are terribly rough and dusty and required some low gear work, but after all the mileage was checked up we received 16 l-2 miles from Anahiem to here. From Anahiem to Freano we made 18 l-2 miles to the gallon. The water did not boil and it was not necessary to add any. I am very well satisfied with the performance of the car, it's a good value for the money.
There are 2,000 autos in the park, 700 came in last week, from every state in the union and from Canada.
"The fishing is not good and it is very dirty and dusty.
"We will probably leave next week and go home the coast route. It is a better trip all the way round.
"Give my regards to the boys in the shop retaining, of course a big share for yourself."
REO HAS BIGGEST JUNE IN HISTORY
The month just passed goes as the largest June in the Reo Motor Car Company's standpoint of shipments, as to announcement just made by Rueschaw, sales manager of Company, received by Dale & cal distributors.
In establishing this new record," says Mr. Rueschaw ships during the past were 50 per cent greater June 1922.
More significant than this statement of increased volkswagenships, however, is the increase has simply come in Reo's endeavor to meet mal and continuous demand passenger cars. Speed Wag taxi cabs. Reo's production the past few months has been insistently even and steady, that there has been a norof material into the factory equally consistent demand products throughout the entire city.
"The prospects for the later and early fall months are encouraging. The Speech is already enjoying heavy salt farm communities and business to be holding up all over the States. There would appear let-up this fall."
Motor bus transportation increase in rural schools from various states indicated 267,000 children were trapped by motor vehicles during a year. One hundred sixty-consolidated schools were ed in Georgia during 1922.

Sales of Jordan Are Up 93 P.C.
A record breaking year for the Jordan Motor Car Company is reeled in a statement including statisticsof production and sales turnover for the twelve months ending June 30, received by the J. E. Walter Co.
Jordan produced 10,147 cars, that represents a 93 per cent increase over the preceding year.
Sales Volume totaled $15,029,
456.71.
The inventory was turned approximately fifteen times during the period.
The sales and advertising expense ran-3 1-2 per cent on the total volume of sales.
The above record is remarkable when the fact is considered that the total volume of business done equals approximately twelve and one half times the authorized capital of the company.

If the public would only realize the number of batteries which go out of service before their time, because the owners do not treat them properly and exercise wise protection measures, the average life of batteries would be much longer, declared the Exide Service Station, of North Los Angeles street, exclusive local Exide distributors.
Many batteries only a few months old are brought into the shop for repairs, because of negligence or of home treatment of some suspected ailment.
The station, however, is glad to furnish its patrons with information on how to take care of their batteries.

the month just passed goes down the largest June in the history of Reo Motor Car Company from the endpoint of shipments, according announcement just made by R. C. Schaw, sales manager of the Reo company, received by Dale & Co., local distributors.
In establishing this new June ord., says Mr. Rueschaw, "Reo's events during the past month is 50 per cent greater than in 1922."
More significant than the mere moment of increased volume and amounts, however, is the fact that increase has simply come about Reo's endeavor to meet the nor- and continuous demand for Reoenger cars, Speed Wagons and cabs. Reo's production during past few months has been constantly even and steady, proving there has been a normal flow material into the factory and anally consistent demand for Reo ducts throughout the entire countryside.
The prospects for the late sum- and early fall months are equal-encouraging. The Speed Wagon ready enjoying heavy sales in the communities and business seems holding up all over the United States. There would appear to be no gap this fall.
Motor bus transportation is on an ease in rural schools. Reports of various states indicate that 3000 children were transported motor vehicles during the past one hundred sixty-two new solidated schools were establish- Georgia during 1922.
The sales and advertising expense ran 3-1-2 per cent on the total volume of sales.
The above record is remarkable when the fact is considered that the total volume of business done equals approximately twelve and one half times the authorized capital of the company.

SAINT MORITZ, July 28.—Automobile traffic is now allowed in all parts of Switzerland, the people of the Canton of the Grisons recently having voted to annul the law prohibiting motor traffic. The other 21 cantons had one by one repealed like laws.
There are still several Swiss Cantons where automobiles are not allowed on the highways on Sundays.
CLUB STARTS DRIVE TO END GRADE CROSSINGS
Popular sentiment demanding the elimination of dangerous grade crossings from the highways of Southern California has congealed in action just taken by the Board of Directors of the Automobile Club of Southern California, saying that "grade crossings must go."
A rigid and extensive investigation into the grade crossing problem has been conducted by the Auto Club in preparation for this final action, and in this investigation it is shown that more than 200 persons have lost their lives at grade crossings during the last year and a half.
It is determining that nothing will be left undone now in order to bring about an immediate solution of the problem.
As an immediate measure of precaution, it is recommended that all trains slow down at grade crossings to fifteen miles per hour, or to such a speed as may insure full control by the motorman. This is to be in effect from the present date until highways and railroads are separated.
Furthermore, it is strenuously recommended by the motoring organization that no more permits for grade crossings on principal highways be granted.
But underlying the entire action by the club is a current denoting the necessity for immediata action and no delay involving red tape or long, futile discussions.
It is also urgently recommended that the campaign of educating motorists to be careful in approaching crossings be extended in the most effective manner possible, and in this the Automobile Club pledges its cooperation, as well as to the California Railway Commission in put-

It is also urgently recommended that the campaign of educating motorists to be careful in approaching crossings be extended in the most effective manner possible, and in this the Automobile Club pledges its cooperation, as well as to the California Railway Commission in putting into effect the policy not to grant further permits for grade crossings on principal highways.
In regard to the cost of elimination of grade crossings work, it is recognized that the responsibility does not rest entirely with the railroads, and that the entire separation cost cannot fall altogether on the railroads with any fairness. The Club recommends that the cost be equitably apportioned between the railroads, the counties and municipalities involved, together with the State of California in such cases where state highways are concerned.
It is further recommended that a competent engineering commission investigate existing conditions, determine which crossings shall first be separated, and then recommend a manner of separation and an estimation of cost.
It is pointed out that so long as the grade crossings remain, the number of accidents will increase in Southern California. It is admittedly true, according to clab officials, that many of the accidents are caused by mistakes or carelessness of automobile drivers. But although the club directors grant this, they are determinedly in favor of eliminating opportunities for mistakes in order to cut down the death toll to a minimum believing that it is not necessary that every time a mistake is made that death should result.
But it is tersely shown that the grade crossing accidents are not all due to carelessness. A dangerous condition exists, and that is all there is to it.
Observations made by the Auto club engineering experts show that the majority of the most dangerous crossings can be readily and economically separated. In some instances, both the railroad tracks and the highways have been graded to meet on a high level, and in examples of this kind, one could be
