BASEBALL BOXING SPORTS ANAHEIM ELKS WIN ANOTHER FAST ONE Harris of Monrovia-Arcadia Elks pitched a pretty game against Highes on his own lot yesterday but went to piece in the ninth when Poio Hax sluggers unlimbered their heavy artillery, seven Orange pickers crossing the home plate on five hits, a walk, batter hit, and the home club only error. Up till that time it was as nice a ball game as has been played this season. Anaheim scored two in the first on hits by Jack Pendelton and Buster Callan and a long two-base drive by Ranage, that was all for them until the ninth when they drove Harris to the showers under a barrage of hits, including a triple by Ramage and a double by Hawkins. The visitors' only score came in the fourth on Johnson's long triple to left and a high throw to third by Bush. That was the only time the home club was dangerous. Hughes pitched one of his best games, having everything as the scores shows. He allowed five hits, widely scattered, struck out two and walked one. Both clubs fielded in a brilliant manner. The home club pulled a fast double-play to get Harris out of a hole while Anaheim keystone combination turned in two snappy plays. Maloney's fielding shown for the home club. He handled six chances cleanly at third base, some of them mighty difficult. Lewis at first place played a fine game for Anaheim, proving that they can come back. Umpires Daley and Teck handled the game in a very capable manner. Anaheim Elks AB. R. H. PO. A. E. Pendleton, ss...5 2 2 1 4 0 B. J., July 23.—Lew Tendler, who will fight Benny Leonard, present champion, for the lightweight crown in New York tonight, weighed in at 134 1-2 pounds at his training quarters here today. He will leave for Gotham later in the morning. TENDLER CONFIDENT, LEONARD IS, ALSO (L. N. S. Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK, July 23.—Lew Tendler, Philadelphia battler, will have his second opportunity to try for the lightweight crown tonight when he meets Benny Leonard, the champion, in a scheduled 15-round bout at the Yankee Stadium. Tendler is confident of victory. So is Leonard. The champion predicts he will win by a knockout and thus settle once and for all the question of supremacy. Benny knows he must win decisively tonight. The bout will be a decision and the champion realizes that altho he won the popular decision from the newsboy fighter in Jersey City a year ago, the margin of victory was so small that had that bout been a decision affair, the judges might have decided against him. The challenger in last year's bout swept Leonard off his feet with his southpaw tactics, and had the champion on the defensive for a greater part of the bout. In the bout tonight, Tendler believes he will prove that Leonard's victory a year ago was a questionable one. He is confident that Benny has not mastered his style of fighting and that he will carry the lightweight crown today to Philadelphia. RICHFIELD D L. A. When the International News Service telephoned his house for a comment on the statement of Jack Skelly that Willard did not train properly for his Firpo battle, Mrs. Willard said she had not heard from her husband for several days. She said she did not know defintibly as to where he was, but that she thot he was enroute to Los Angeles. YESTERDAY'S HOME RUNS NATIONAL No. Tttl Tierney, Phil. ...11 T. Odds of two to one are offered on the champion and five to eight that he will win by a knockout. Plain Dealer Ads Bring Results. SARGUM SPROUTING By Sargum Sprout Isn't it strange how we think of the people that we call successful or that we sorta look up to as great. That Dr. Frank Crane had had a life long fight against morbid and gloomy self never entered my mind. His forceful writings always impressed me as coming from a man who had perfect control over himself. He has made the world listen to his ideas, yet all the time he was besieged by a foolish fear that we might have expected belonged to one well, just a little weak minded or some one with several foolish kinks in their gray matter. In an article in the current American Dr. Crane lays bare the skeletons that have been rattling in his closet for all his years. These confessions were made to help others over the bogs when the "blues" have settled their clutches into the very soul. It took a brave man to lay bare the foolish dilusions that almost wrecked a life and it took a brave man to throw off those dilusions and make himself so useful to his fellow men. A man with an arm full of kettles and a bill that ran into several dollars dropped in on me yesterday with: "You are the husband of Mrs. Smith, aren't you?" I have been accused of many things but never before have I been accused of belonging to the great army of Smiths. I have a hard enough time trying to pay Mrs. Sprout's bills without taking on any of the Mrs. Smiths'. That pot peddler must have been crazy or he was trying to kid me. How in thunder could I be the husband of Mrs. Smith? I must look dumb, poor not the only ones who something over on me wrestler and fighter wink me. A yellow did a loan on a phony dish a watch. Y., July 23. "Seventy-five thousand sucker fans paid their money to see Jess Willard take a soft flop in his fight with Firpo" said Jack Skelley today in charging that the big Kansan did not train properly for his bout and that he was not knocked out and could have continued. Skelley, who was in charge of Willard's training both for the Firpo fight and the Floyd Johnson match, which preceded it, declared he believed Willard never had an idea he would get a match with Dempsey and that he went into the Firpo match with the deliberate intention of fading out of the picture as soon as the going got rough. "I haven't said anything previously," Skelley said. "but you can tell 'em I did everything I could to make Willard train and to make him fight when he stacked up against Firpo." "In the sixth round when Willard was going all right, there was talk from Ray Archer, Willard's manager, of having to throw in the towel and I refused to fall for that and said, 'what's the idea?'" "Then when big Jess went down on his knees in the eighth, it was right near me. I yelled at him and said 'you're all right, get up' and pleaded with him to rise, but he just looked at me as if to say 'go to blazes.'" "When he did get up after the count, I thought perhaps he was hurt and rushed to him with the smelling salts, but he pushed me to one side and then posed for the photographer." "What got me is that after the fight he left me flat and never came near me. He never had a word of thanks for anyone of us around here who tried to help him." "The fans who paid their good money to see the fight did not get a fair shake from Jess, as I see it. Their money put him on easy street and he just bowed gracefully as if they were a bunch of suckers." Professor Paul Kammerer. Prof. Paul Kammerer, a biologist of the University of Vienna, claims to have demonstrated the truth of evolution. The crippled yacht reached Venice during the night and several injured members of the crew were taken to hospitals and their homes for treatment. At the time of the explosion the Idalla was leading the five yachts racing from Santa Barbara to Honolulu. PROUTINGS m Sprout and not be a Smith? Firpo knocked out Jess Willard, in what was supposed to be the final demonstration of his ability in proving him worthy of meeting Jack Dempsey. Mariner, 47, reputed to be a wealthy New York merchant, was arrested here today for violating the Mann act. Mariner's arrest took place after officers had been called by neighbors who reported that a flight was in progress at Mariner's bungalow. Perbine in which a woman and a child had but recently been sitting, completely demolishing it, and battered its way into the ground within a few feet of a huge tent in which 300 people were eating dinner. The manner in which the accident occurred is in dispute, some saying that the woman in the front cockpit "froze" the control, causing the accident, while others say the aeroplane struck a guy wire of one of the oil derricks, and came to the ground. The witnesses are agreed that the plane circling over the holdings of the Daily Oil Syndicate, suddenly went into a nose dive and dashed to earth. The several hundred people who were eating dinner a few feet away as guests of the Daily Oil Syndicate were asked to leave because of the accident, and all efforts to interest them in oil stock were suspended. The bodies of the two victims of the crash were taken to the White-Emmerson undertaking establishment at Whittier. Both are said to have been killed instantly. SMACKS 18TH HOMER ST.
