RADIO SPELLING BEE INTERESTS OTHERS (By Interventional News Service) SACRAMENTO, July 6.—Because of widespread interest in the unique contest outside of the state, Will C. Wood, state superintendent of public instruction, announced today that four neighboring states will be permitted to enter the radio spelling bee to be staged early in November. During the National Education Conference Wood will confer with J. A. Churchill, Oregon; Josephine Preston, Washington; W. J. Hunting, Nevada, and J. O. Case of Arizona, heads of the state school departments in their respective states, relative to the entrance of senior high school students from their states in the contest. The spelling examination will be broadcasted by Wood from either Sacramento or San Francisco, Emerson's Essays being used as the examination material. The spelling contest, which is intended to prove the reliability of modern educational methods, will be taken by thousands of students "listening in" at their respective schools. FAMOUS FRENCH RECIPE By Alice Langlier (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) PARIS, July 6.—In most French restaurants strawberries are served with the stems on with a little pile of sugar at the side of dish. The stemming is performed at the table, as well as the washing, if any is done. Most of the French find that the water washes away too much of the flavor. Some moisten the berries with white wine and others use the famous thick cream of Chantilly. Because of the cool weather prices are high and the thrifty French housewife is obliged to use even the smallest and poorest ones. They go to make good tarts. Line a mould with a flaky crust and fill with the cleaned strawberries, sprinkling well with powdered sugar. Cover with the same crust to which has been added a taste of BOOTLEGGERS TO JAIL WITH VICTIM (By International News Service) SACRAMENTO, July 6.—In addition to the penalty meted out by the court, bootleggers arrested in Sacramento will in the future be forced to spend their time in jail in the company of their booze crazed victims. Police Sergeant Harry Ribble inaugurated the new policy by consigning a number of men taken for dry law violations to the drunk cell. "I have no sympathy for the bootleger, said Ribble, "and I intend to let the ones who are arrested see what they are responsible for by locking the mup with the drunks." DINNER STORIES Three o'clock in the morning! Brown let himself noiselessly into his flat, tiptoeed to the bedroom and started to undress silently in the dark, says Judge. He thought perhaps he could creep into bed without disturbing dear wife. Although, of course, he really should have known better than to think such a happening was possible. For suddenly Mrs. Browne spoke: "Hello! Been playing cards again?" "Yes, dear." "And how much are you in?" "I'm all in—move over!" "What kind of a fellow is Watson?" asked Black. "Well," replied White, "he's the kind of fellow who skates on thin ice, rocks the boat, races a train to the crossing and looks to see how much gas there is in the tank with a lighted match. Nobody knows why he has ben able to live as long as he has." —Cincinnati Enquirer. On the big curve coming into the Irish wayside station, the train stopped longer than usual one morning, and the guard descending from his van, walked up to the driver, says the "Tatler." "What are ye stoppin' for?" he inquired. "Sure, and can't ye see the signal is again me?" MORE LAND FOR VETERANS WASHINGTON, July 6. — More than 100,000 acres of land in four western states were thrown open today to world war veterans by the interior department. The land includes $36,000 acres in San Bernardino and San Diego counties, Calif.; 1800 acres in Costa-Co., Colo.; and 44,000 acres in Washington-co., Utah. IMPORTANCE OF THE MOTOR PASSPORT. An operator of a motor vehicle should not forget to carry both certificate of registration and license or operator's card, (if any), on his parson. In case of a violation, the possession of these may save humiliation and embarrassment. In some jurisdictions, failure to have them is, in itself, an offense. HOUSEHOLD HINTS Vinalgrette Dressing—This is one of the best dressings for spring and summer salads, and when it is used the salad bowl should be rubber over with a cut clove of garlic dipped in salt before the salad ingredients are placed in it. To make the dressing blend together twelve tablespoonsful of salad oil, six tablespoonful of vinegar, half a teaspoonful each of salt and paprika, one-quarter of a teaspoonful each of mixed mustard and powdered sugar and four tablespoonsful of mixed mustard and powdered sugar and four tablespoonsful of mixed parsley chevril, chives and terragon leave finely chopped. Smothered Chicken—Select clean and joint a good chicken weighing four pounds. The chicken should be singed, then washed carefully by lukewarm water with a little brush before it is cut up. Lay the chicken in a large frying pan, putting a half cupful of butter or any good fat in the center. Add water, if needed, to keep from burning. Cover the pan and let the content cook slowly for half an hour. When it begins to brown turn in pieces and watch that they do not burn, but brown evenly. Serve on toast garnished with fresh cress. If desired a good brown gravy can be made and served with the chicken, using the foundation of fat for its making left in the frying pan. Grapefruit Pie—Juice of one and one-half grapefruit, juice of one-half orange, juice of one-half lemon, one fourth cups of sugar, one cup hot water, four level tablespoons corn starch, one teaspoon butter, two egg yolks, meringue. Mix cornstarch and sugar, add boiling water, stirring constantly. Cook two minutes, add butter, egg yolks (slightly beaten), and the strained fruit juices. Cool, put into a baked shell and cover with a meningue made with the stiffly beaten whites of the eggs, two level table spoons powdered sugar one teaspoon lemon juice. Bake fifteen minutes in slow oven until meningue is set and delicately browned. FALSE PRESCRIPTIONS LOS ANGELES. July 6. — Los Angeles is being flooded with counterspace debris. Mrs. Maria Teresa Candeo. Mrs. Maria Teresa Candeo, wife of Enrique O. Candeo, Mexico City capitalist, is suing for divorce in San Francisco. She charges he went to New York on business—he said—but she later found out the "business" was a woman. He sticks to his original story. TRAVEL LONG WAY SAINT LOUIS, Mo., July 6. Whether they started from home with their faces set toward the east or turned around and went in the opposite direction toward the setting sun—it made no difference as the distance traveled by the seventeen delagates and their wives from Australia and New Zealand to the fourteenth annual convention of Rotary International. They would start from scratch either way and have about the same distance to come to attend the convention—which is more than halfway around the world—because they would be compelled to travel a thousand miles or so north as well as twelve to fifteen thousand east or west. MUST PAY COST OF FOREST FIRE DAMAGE LOS ANGELES, July 6. In the future when a person is caught starting a forest fire they will be presented with a bill for the same. Such was the announcement of the drastic measure to be taken by Stuart Flintham, county fire warden, in an effort to stamp out starting of forest fires. After a person has been found guilty of starting a forest fire, Forester Flintham plans to present them a bill for the damage done before sentence is pronounced. If the bill is paid the court may be asked to extend clemency. TIPS TO PROSPECTIVE BUYERS When buying a car, there are eight vital considerations which should govern the selection: Balance, power, control, lubrication, cooling, economy, durability and finish. QUARTER CENTURY HEAD QUITS 'CO-OP' BERKELEY, July 6. The student store at the University of California, famous in its early history as the rendezvous of Jack London, Frank Norris and other literary celebrities, has lost James R. Davis, the man who has managed the "co-op" for the past 26 years. When Davis took over the management of the student store it was only a small book shop located in North Hall. Now it is doing a quarter of a million dollars worth of business annually and is located in the new Stephens union building. Davis expects to go into business for himself next December. His successor has not been chosen. HOGS ALMOST EQUAL STATE GOLD OUTPUT BERKELEY, July 6. The lowly porker is at last coming into its own. The value of California's hogs in 1921 is estimated at nearly ten million dollars or only a trifle less than the total gold output of the state, according to the University of California. During the past decade, ending in 1920, the number of hogs in the state has increased 174 per cent. So important has become the industry that a correspondence course in swine husbandry is now available for hog raisers. So much of the world has been civilized that about the only remaining menace is people. FALSE PRESCRIPTIONS LOS ANGELES, July 6. Los Angeles is being flooded with count erfelt prescription orders for various kinds of intoxicating liquors. Several druggists are now under investigation and scores of doctors are under suspicion. Prohibition officer recently seized the entire prescription records of two druggists and found that a majority of the prescriptions they filled were counterfeit. SPARKS AND SPIKES By George G.
