YALE SUPERHUMAN IS CALIFORNIA YOUTH
(By International News Service)
NEW HAVEN, July 8.—California has given Yale another "superhuman." this time in the intellectual class in Francis Otto Matthiessen, whose home was in Pasadena. Yale senior students voted Matthiessen the man in their class most to be admired, and most likely to succeed. Then the faculty, pickled him out as the senior who has done the most for Yale "by inspiring in his classmates an admiration and love for the best traditions of that high scholarship to the service of which our universities are dedicated."
To make the honor immediately substantial, Matthiessen was awarded $500 in cash, as a result of a prize offered by Mrs. Alpheus Henry Snow, of Washington, D.C., in memory of her husband, who was a member of the Yale class of 1879. The Snow prize was awarded this year for the first time and becomes a permanent feature of the Yale prize list.
NO SMOKING IN U. S. FORESTS
SAN FRANCISCO, July 6.—"No Smoking" signs, bidding the hiker or camper beware of the danger of using "my lady nicotine", are being tacked up for the first time in the history of the U. S. Forest Service in California.
The Trabuco division of the Cleveland National Forest is being liberally carded with the signs which also warn against lighting camp fires.
Sirilar signs are to be placed in other California forests, according to Paul G. Redington, district forester, who declared the underbrush this year is dry as tinder because of a lack of rain.
Redington is now on a road inspection tour in Oregon during which he will inspect the newly completed Klamath River road, extending from Orleans to Happy Camp, scheduled to be formally opened (Monday) June 9.

AIR SPEEDERS SAFE
SACRAMENTO, July 6.—"Speed burners" of the air will escape supervision by "traffic copa" for another two years. Governor Richardson having failed to sign Assembly Bill 552, providing for the creation of a State Aircraft Department.
Pilots of aircraft, however, must observe similar regulations to autoists with regard to "Safety Zones". Being prevented from flying over cities unless at designated altitudes. Stunt flying over cities is strictly taboo.
Will H. Marsh, superintendent of the State Motor Vehicle Department, will enforce the air safety measures whenever his motorcycle officers can...
