EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester Editqr and Publisher MENACE IN BUILDING CONDITIONS The activity in building, in which the United States is engaged, has its potential perils. Upon this phenomenal activity the country has depended, in large measure, for its prosperity. Payrolls of construction operation have been and are huge—the most colossal in the history in the country. Should any sudden haltling come to this record-breaking activity, the whole country would suffer from the reaction. It is or the utmost importance, therefore, that every interest and influence which can have bearing on building operations should be in line to maintain normal construction. Inflation is the greatest peril to the building industry. There are several forms of inflation. Any extortionate charge, from any source, is a detriment to the industry and is sure to react unfavorably upon the country, sooner or later. Every possible influence should be brought to bear to keep conditions at normal. Against inflation the hand of every man should be raised. Pessimistic first news from Captain Amundsen, to the effect that he had abandoned his plans for an airship trip to the North Pole, seems to have been overdrawn. Later advice indicate that the trip will be undertaken. That it will succeed eventually there is every reason to believe. SLINGING VERBAL MUD IN POLITICS They are copying American political campaign methods, in Mexico. In the Presidential contest in the neighbor country bitter personalities are passing, aimed at President Obregon, for the most part. General Villareal of Montgrey, for example, is charging that President Obregon is planning to name the next president by using the powers of his office to control the national elections next year. He also is accusing the Obregon government of robbing the citizens of the state of Nuevo Leon of their suffrage. Personal aspersion is one of the most depicable features of political campaigning in any country. The United States has been plagued with it. There is too much of it even now, although there has been improvement over former campaigning methods. Time was when any man who became a candidate for any office became a target for villification and abuse. Issues of the campaign were clouded by this resort to guttersnipe disparaging of rival candidates. There is not so much of this now, but there is more of it than should be. president by using the powers of his office to control the national elections next year. Radio is transforming home life throughout the country. It is bringing into the homes the very best that musical, dramatic and rhetorical talent affords. It is giving the young folk attraction incentive to stay at home of nights. It is inclining parents, too, to spend more of the eventide at home. Like the phonograph, it is an entertaining, refining, uplifting instrumentality. KEEP MEMORY FRESH OF VALOROUS DEEDS Grateful American are proposing to survey the battlefields of Europe and to place permanent markers on the fields where American soldiers fought in the World War. Good! This should be done. And the graves of America's dead, in Europe, should be kept green perpetually. The American Flag always should wave over them. And on each recurring Memorial Day flowers should strew the consecrated ground in which lies the mortal remnant of these brave men. But while performing these gracious works of memorializing, due attention should be given to the enshrining of the heroes of the World War, living and dead in the hearts of the people. There is where they should have their monument. Those of them who are disabled should be cared for tenderly. All should be treated with just consideration. In the way the people and the government treat these heroes lies the finest monument and the best memorial to these valiant men. President Harding will be welcomed throughout the West as the first citizen of the Republic—as a man of exalted character and estimable traits. His reception by the masses of the people will not be political in character. They will greet him as one American greets another. The United States must exert its influence throughout the world to preserve just peace. This country no longer could, if it would, hold aloof and ignore the circumstances which make for war or peace. The United States must have its part in the great world drama. "How high am the humility today?" asked a hall boy in our apartment house. Becoming head of Oundle School in 1892, F. W. Sanderson had carried out there certain ideas in education so remarkable that his influence bids fair to equal that of Arnold Rugby. It probable H. G. Wells' reference in his latest novel to the funeral of a devoted idealist who had struggled against constant opposition in his life ended in exhaustion was a reference to Sanderson. "A most potent force in education," the Spectator, calls him. While it appears that Sanderson was like Arnold in thinking the main object of a school not to teach but to open the vision, he was an effective innovator in teaching. He gave Oundle a remarkable comprehensive circuitum. Emphasizing science, building workshops, and teaching even agriculture, he insisted that his scientific instruction should be alive. Utilizing the willingness of boys he aroused to enthusiasm by radio, wireless, or automobiles, he dismissed the rote-teaching in favor of correlated sets of experiments, preferably devised by the boys themselves. They moved forward until they engaged in advanced research, using apparatus of the highest order—spontaneous, polarimeters, fluxometers and potentiometers. Their labors led them to turn to texts, but even more to the great sources like the writings of Paraday. Oundle taught not only French and German but Spanish and Italian, and Russian. Text books were even a secondary place. The pupils were offered simple and attractive reading—tales of the war, adventure stories, and popular magazines—and progressed to more difficult work. POEMS THAT LIVE THE SOUNNET nuns fret not at their concerts' narrow room; and hermits are contented with their cells; and students with their pensive citadels; raids at the wheel, the weaver at his loom. It must be remembered, however, that when first the dove appeared as an emblem of peace all the diplomats were drowned. The cases are different. We took this country from the Indians, as Europe charges, but the Indians still have the oil wells. Tolerance is what makes one part of the country wish to enforce the 14th amendment and another part to enforce the 18th. A prominent German says the next war will be fought underground. He probably means that it will be fought for the stuff underground. No wonder the cost of municipal state and national government is higher. We are getting so much more of it. Being good and untroublesome will not get you a place in history. The only famous fly in the world is the one in the ointment. Europe has become so listless and worn that about all any nation can say about an opponent is that it is on the verge of something. Correct this sentence: "Let's not go to the dance," said the girl; "It's so much nicer to sit at home and read aloud to one another." POEMS THAT LIVE THE SONNET Suns fret not at their concent's narrow room; And hermits are contented with their cells; And students with their pensive citadels; Suids at the wheel, the weaver at his loom, It blithe and happy; bees that soar for bloom, High as the highest peak of Furness-fells. Corn not the Sonnet; Critic, you have frowned, Windless of its just honours; with this key Shakespeare unlocked his heart; the melody Of this small lute gave ease to Petrarch's wound; Of thousand times this pipe did Tasso sound; With its Camoens soothed an exile's grief; The Sonnet glittered a gay myrtle leaf Mid the cypress with which Dante crowned His visionary brow; a glow-worm lamp, It cheered mild Spenser, called from Facery-land To struggle through dark ways; and when a damp Tell round the path of Milton, in his hand The thing became a trumpet; whence he blew Foul animating strains—alas, too few! It is the density of population on the outside of New York, however, that makes bucketshops thrive. Why should there be a third party? Those who are mad about something can vote for Debs, as usual. The labor shortage has become so acute that you seldom see more than a dozen idle men watching a sign painter. The open door policy in China gives nationals of every country an equal opportunity to flirt with disaster. Of course insects have brains. How else could they figure out just where you are going to have your picnic? The poor French sailor, being denied his ration of wine, may be now forced to drink some of that he is smuggling in. The Near East conferees have one consolation. When at last they do something, the Senate won't have to ratify it. Speaking of waste, there is that ever-recurring line to the effect that the condemned man ate a hearty breakfast. It isn't probable that we ever shall have a secret organization whose members are pledged to mind their Before we have any more "ten greatest" contests let's all git t-gether on what constitutes greatness. If some folks profit by their mistakes they must be awful tightwads. When an American persuades a Turk and a Greek to stop acting silly it is said that he has averted a crisis.
