LAUDS HOUDAILLE
SHOCK ABSORBERS
Traveling over the roughest kind of roads and through snow for feet deep in his Studebaker special touring car, J. W. Ross of Fallerton reports that he didn't have a bit of mechanical trouble and never had to change the air in his tires.
The entire trip covered 4700 miles, all but 500 of it by auto. Most of the pleasure was due, Ross declares to the fact that the car had Houdaille shock absorbers. Owing to these the Studebaker was able to go at a speed of 35 miles per hour over a 50-mile detour in Canada, compared with 25 miles for four other cars which navigated the distance at the same time.
Ross and his party visited at Fort Andrews and went up the 1,000-mile strait beyond Vancouver part of the way. Here was where the Tour feet of snow was encountered—19 miles of it, packed down hard. The trees hung heavy with snow over the party at times shutting them in.
The party made it a point to stop at all Studebaker garages on the way, and the latter gave them the usual courteous pleasant service and all the information they asked for.
FRANKLIN SALES
RECORDS BROKEN
The factories of the Franklin Automobile Co. at Syracuse, N.Y., continues to break sales records, says an announcement which has reached the Bob White Co., local Nash and Franklin distributors.
On June 5 the factory was 17 cars ahead of 1922; by June 9 it was 57 cars ahead for the month; on the 14th, 80 cars; on the 16th, 143 cars; on the 19th, 202.
June, 1922, was the second largest month in the first half year. The factory delivered 1023 cars.
Therefore, the concern has enjoyed a 50 per cent lead over the same period a year ago, estimating the gain for the whole month on the basis of
Tractor Transforms Asia Minor Country
Over in the Caucasus of Asia Minor the Fordson Tractor is more than a power plant is a land and life saver.
There in the shadow of Mt. Ararat, famed resting place of Noah's Ark, it is the twentieth century missionary to the oldest land in the world and brings the most striking of all contrasts between modern power farming and the primitive methods in vogue for thousands of years.
Introduced in the Caucasus a little more than a year ago by the Near East Relief, the tractor has revolutionized agriculture and, thanks to it, there is no famine this year.
With the Tractor and modern machinery the fields, heretofore only scratched with the historic stick and oxen teams, have been played deep and with less seed have yielded an even greater crop than ever before. Hundreds of natives too, have been released from farm work to enter industrial pursuits.
A recent note from Erivan, Armenia, tells the story of tractor accomplishments in striking figures.
"Ten American tractors ploughed a thousand acres of land in eleven days the message said. To accomplish the same work in the same time would have required 1,000 oxen and 500 men."
Under the power farming the crops in the Caucasus have been 50 per cent larger and one third less seed has been used. Where Armeria only a short time ago, with 80 per cent of its population engaged in agriculture, was only producing one-third of its cereal requirements, it is today producing about one-half with far less men employed in the work.
The Near East Relief is now using eleven Fordson Tractors.
With gasoline power, fed by the rich oil fields of Baku on the Caspian Sea and with modern machinery, the Caucasus promises to accomplish one of the most interesting agricultural developments in the history of the world.

DODGE BROTHERS TOURING CAR
If there is one word which will sum up the average owner's impression of Dodge Brothers Touring Car, that word is dependable.
If there is a word to express the quality which Dodge Brothers have striven, above all else, to build into the Touring Car, it is—again—dependable.
Indeed, it is not too much to say that the word dependable has come to be definitely associated, the nation over, with Dodge Brothers Touring Car—and the other vehicles bearing their name.
Nor have Dodge Brothers built this enviable reputation through advertising. They have built motor cars, so dependable in fact that the word has presented itself automatically to the public mind.

APPLEBY MOTORS TO GIVE UP PEERLESS
Abandonment of the Peerless car distribution in Orange-co as soon as models on hand have been sold is announced by F. F. Sullivan of the Appleby Motors, Inc.
Sullivan said further that the new models and makes of car designed by Durant engineers would be handled here as fast as they could be obtained. The Durant six will be the first of these. The Flint will arrive on about Sept. 1. The Mason Road King, a speed truck, should arrive in the near future, says Sullivan. The Locomobile will be supplied on orders. The Princeton should be here within a few months. The Eagle still is in the background.
James E. Appleby, who retains an interest in the concern, is pushing the used car plan successfully in the northwest. He will arrive in Portland today. He has been interesting county motor car dealers in the scheme, which has been such a lifesaver in Orange-co and elsewhere in California; and will seek to persuade the Oregon state organization to endorse it.
ANOTHER CLAIMING RACE JULY 15TH
Santa Ana will again be host to the racing drivers of the southland as another resurrection day race is being planned for July 15. Already fifteen applications have been sent to headquarters at the George Calhoun used car market, 213 N. Broadway, Santa Ana. The driver must agree to sell his speed boat for $100. Automobiles from the year one to the present date will lvie for honors.
The feature of the day will be the 25-mile junk race. Here is where the action is expected to center. A free for all 50-mile scramble will be added attraction. There are several short sprints slated.
The track is one mile around and is in much better condition than at which the amount of oil is automatically proportioned to the throttle opening as well as to the motor speed.
The patented Essex carburetor is perfectly automatic and has no adjustments except a dash control for slightly varying the proportions of the mixture. The air is preheated and a dash-operated choke is provided for starting. The carburetor is mounted high up on the head so that the mixture is fed by gravity into the cylinder, assuring easy starting.
CABRIOLET HAS UNUSUAL ENGINE
The Essex cabriolet embodies some features, says Branch Manager Rossler of R. W. Townsend, Inc., of Anaheim and Santa Ana, that are very unusual on cars of its prices class.
The motor has four cylinders, 2.5-8x5, giving 179 cubic inches displacement. The tax rating is 18.2 horse power. The actual horse power is more than 5. An aluminum crankcase anchored to the frame at four points, carries the block cast cylinders of semi-steel, to which is bolted a detachable head carrying the overhead inlet valves. Exhaust valves are on the side. The counter-weighted crankshaft, 2 1/2 inches in diameter, is carried in 3 main bearings. Split aluminum pistons with 3 rings are carried on 11 3-4-inch I-beam connecting rods.
The motor is lubricated by a modified circulating splash system, in

CHALMERS TOURING PRICE UP
The boost in price by a small figure on the Chalners touring, which Turton & Lumsdon announced this week, provided a somewhat surprising feature in view of the many reductions which have been taking place.
Battery ignition with automatic advance, a generator, a separate starting motor and a 100-ampere battery take care of electrical requirements.

BELL TIMER TAKES WELL IN ANAHEIM
Three or four of the leading car distributors in the city have purchased the Bell timer of C. J. Nenno leading accessories man. There is a Bell timer for Fords as well as the larger cars.
Says a statement of the makers:
"Almost all Ford owners know that nine-tenths of their motor troubles are due to faulty ignition. The Bell timer eliminates all timer trouble, because it assures not only accurate but permanently accurate timing! As a result, you always have a smoothly running motor with maximum efficiency at all times. You save gasoline—and also get a lot more power for taking more hard, long hills on high. Besides that, you have a much more flexible motor which can be throttled way down on high in traffic without skipping.
Whether the weather is cold or hot, rainy or clear, the Bell timer can always be absolutely depended on to give timing which is perfectly accurate. This produces maximum power, because the explosion of the gasoline takes place at the point of highest efficiency."
