DRILLING STOPPED AT CATHCART WELL
By EMwood J. Munger
In the Whittier field southwest of La Habra the Cathcart well has quit drilling. Geo. E. Cathcart, a Canadian oil operator came into the California field less than a year ago, thought that the Toller property had oil on it and took a chance. After drilling 5285 feet of hole Mr. Cathcart decided the liquid gold was not there and quit. The La Habra Midway continues drilling on its test well northwest of La Habra and now reports 5440 feet of oil. The formation is now running in a very hard shell, and the backers of the well hope that they are in the cap rock.
At Bellflower the Calpetro Producers got a little set back when it was found that the water had not been shut off in the 8½ at 3200 and it would be necessary to set a second string. A 6½ string is now being run in and it is the intention to set this at about 3800 feet.
The Bandin District afforded a little excitement a few days ago when the Fullerton Oil Co.'s Brickyard well showed quite an appreciable amount of gas. At 5335 the gas showing and oil colorings made the best showing the Simons well has ever shown. There seems to be a little possibility now of picking up a deep sand. If this is done it will be the first time in the California field that a deep sand has been picked up with shout-first finding a top and intermediate sand.
At Compton C. C., Salton's well is making nice progress. Some 3100 feet of hole has been made and the drilling is going good. The Union Oil Co. continues to battle with water conditions on the Callister well and is getting ready to set a second string of pipe. A 6½ string below the 8½ set at 3760.
Near Downey E. A. Lamb created a little sensation recently when he found a strong showing of gas and something that looked like oil at 1100
