NO NATION SAFE FROM AIR ATTACKS
By DAVID M. CHURCH
LONDON, June 15.—The next war may see civilization in dust and smoke, according to opinion expressed today by H. G. Welts, famous English novelist, philosopher and historian.
Wells declared it was useless for England to defend herself against air raids by building up a tremendous air flee. No hatton, he said can successfully defend itself from air attacks.
"All we can do is to retaliate and wipe out our enemies if possible," said Wells. "In the war of the future one bomb will wipe out the inhabitants of a small town and a rain of bombs will destroy every living thing in a large city.
When that stage is reached, the profession of arms will be reduced to absurdity. No one, either combatants, or non-combatants, will survive. For all we can tell, civilization may end in smoke and dust.
Well is noted for having foretold the use of poison gas in war. Nearly 25 years ago he forecast this method of fighting in his book, 'The War of the Worlds.'"
ARREST WOMAN FOR DEADLY ASSAULT
The first arrest occurred today from the results of the mixup on East Santa Ana-st. a few nights ago in which Pete Ybarra was painfully injured. Coca Gathas, the woman in the case, was picked up this morning by Ed Marion, constable, on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon. She is said to have drawn the knife on Ybarra which ensued in the fighting scrape in which three men are said to have been involved.
Charles Derigo, charged with reckless driving, appeared before Judge Brown today, and entered a plea of not guilty, and demanded a jury trial.
