BREAK WITH “BIG 5” BY FIRESTONE, FACT The report of an approximate 10 per cent reduction on Firestone tires is confirmed by L. A. Ogilby of Long Beach, Firestone representative in this territory, who was here yesterday. The reduction is due, says Ogilby, to the fact that H. S. Forestone wishes to give the motoring public the greatest possible tire value and to confirm his stand against the rubber export duty levied by England, which plans to pay its war debt to the United States eight years out of profits on rubber used by the American motorist. Correcting reports, Ogilby declares that the rumored purchase of rubber by his company from the Goodyear Co. was false. He says his concern owns a fine preparation plant and warehouse at Singapore, buying rubber direct from the plantation and shipping it straight to the Akron factories. The rumor that the current tires was to raise money was also false, as the recent financial statement showed that the Firestone company was in the best possible condition. The British Rubber Restriction Act was the cause of Firestone’s withdrawing from the Rubber Assn., Ogilby added. H. S. Firestone fought this act forcibly, believing, as was afterwards proved, that it was for the benefit of a small group of British capitalists who can distate rubber prices. When the other members of the so-called Big Five refused to aid him, he withdrew. A Simple Method of Edging Lawns When the surface of a walk is on the same level as the lawn, it is a common practice to trim the overhanging grass by means of a spade or other sharp implement, leaving a small V-shaped trench. If there is much of a slope to the walk, the rains often wash away the exposed soil, and make refilling necessary at intervals. Under such conditions it is better to refrain from further trimming, and allow the grass to grow. As soon as the roots have gained a firm foothold, to prevent erosion of the soil, further growth can be checked for the remainder of the growing season by running the flame of a gasoline blowtorch along a narrow strip. D. WEYER (G. N. S. Staff Correspondent) BERLIN, June 14—More than 1,000,000 German marks could be purchased today with an American ten dollar bill. It costs 18,000 marks to buy a pound of butter, but oleomargarine is slightly less. Eggs cost 1,000 marks a piece. Price of bread is about to be raised 25% and flour in proportion. There is a strong movement on the part of labor for payment of wages according to the value of the dollar. The cost of coffins in Germany has risen beyond the reach of the average man. In view of this fragile circumstance the government has issued a decree permitting the use of paper bardboard and plaster "folders." Undertakers are doing a flourishing business lending coffins in which corpses may be placed until interment. Nice sportsmanlike rules of warfare are necessary to make mankind fall respectable during intervals of peace. Courtship has a more complicated process in the old days, but there was no taxicab meter to urge making it snappy.
