HURRAH! LAST DAY OF SCHOOL'S HERE
Orange-co schools close today,
those that didn't close a week ago.
The opening date in the fall is Sept.
10, and will not be changed. R. P.
Mitchell, county superintendent, announces.
The number of diplomas issued to eighth grade graduates was 785, approximately 200 more than last year,
according to Mitchell. A general average of 75 per cent, as usual, was asked of all students and an average of 60 per cent in the four major studies, arithmetic, history, geography and reading.
The astonishing thing is not the stork's bill in which the infant is carried, but the doctor's bill.
CROKER DEFENDS ESTATE HANDLING
(By Daniel O'Connell)
(L. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
DUBLIN, June 8.—Richard Croker, Jr., testifying today in the suit
to break the will of the late Richard Croker, former leader of Tammany
in New York, defended the manner
in which he had handled his father's financial affairs in New York.
When Richard resumed the stand
to continue the testimony begun yesterday, he was asked about his father's properties. He said that the real estate at Glencairn and Palm Beach were valued at nearly $2,000,000 and that there were other valuable properties as well.
The witness denied the accusation of his stepmother, Mrs. Beulah Croker, that the costs of a legal action at

PRISONERS NEARLY ESCAPED AT SEATTLE
SEATTLE, June 8.—Immigration authorities today are conducting a searching investigation into the plot which brought about an attempted wholesale escape of 150 prisoners from the immigration station here last night.
Ten ringleaders were removing the window bars in one of the larger collars when intercepted by guards. Reinforced squads of federal men kept a guard over the prisoners throughout the night to prevent any further outbreaks.
Palm Beach had not been paid. Richard produced receipts. Later he accounted for withdrawals made upon his father's New York bank account.
Earlier, Richard testified his father established a trust fund of $100,000 when he separated from his first wife and that he (the witness) was still manager of it. He said he personally had obtained about $175,000 from his father.
Richard testified he warned his father before the latter's marriage that he should "investigate Beulah's past."
Richard was asked by counsel for Mrs. Croker whether he meant to imply that she was immoral.
The witness said he meant that she was "known along Broadway." He denied he was responsible for raising the issue of Mrs. Croker's alleged marriage to Guy R. Marone, at Northampton, Mass. He said he did not know Marone.
MANY VISIT NEW LEGION QUARTERS
Nearly everyone of the hundreds who attended the formal opening of Anaheim's new city hall last night was delighted with an inspection of the spacious quarters assigned the American Legion and Auxiliary in the basement.
The auxiliary has not yet completed moving.
The Legion room which occupied the northwest corner of the basement is well lighted and the interior is pleasantly arranged.
While not partitioned by walls, the Legion post quarters are divided into two parts, one being used as a general meeting room and the other a reading room and lounge. The commander's chair is a prominent feature in the convention room. The chairs are placed to give the room the appearance of a masonic hall.
The commander's gavel is on a stand occupied by a large Bible.
The reading room is designed to give an atmosphere of comfort, with cushioned rockers and a magazine rack filled with periodicals where he on whose hands time hangs heavy my while away the hours. There are also writing tables, a victrola and two pool tables.
The walls are decorated with pictures donated by Will Hirsch. These pictures range from battlefields, scenes familiar to many Orange-co boys, to pictures of the cities and points of interest of continental Europe.
A kitchen is also maintained where suppers may be prepared for both Legion and Auxiliary banquets.
Adjoining to, and entered by the way of the Legion quarters, are the quarters of the Legion Auxiliary, whose membership is composed of sisters, mothers and wives of the ex-soldiers, and those women who saw service "over there". The Auxiliary says Jack Hebson, "is the backbone of the Legion. The Legion would..."
STILL SEEKING MISSING “KING”
ST. JOSEPH. Mich., June 7.—The man hunt is on today for Benjamin Purnell, missing "king" of the House of David, sought on a warrant charging him with a statutory offense on the complaint of Gladys Bamford Ruhl, former member of the colony.
The girl charged that Benjamin had mistreated her when she was but 15 years old and an inmate of the House of David.
A spectacular raid on Shiloh and the House of David late yesterday failed to uncover the missing "king."

The Auxiliary room his a victrola presented by the Legion. It also contains a large Bible similar to the one in the Legion room.
The Legion has a store room near the entrance to their own room. The Legion Auxiliary is using a store-room south of their room.
The Legion has a large American flag, donated by the Elks. Three chairs donated at the recent opening, one by Fritz Youngblinth, and the other two by the Kiwanis Club.
WENSEL ARRAIGNED FOR WIEE BEATING
G. Wensel, 842 N. Palmst., was arrested by the local police yesterday on the charge of wife beating and was arraigned before Judge Brown today. Officers say it has become a habit with him to chastise his wife, and that it became a nuisance to the neighbors, who reported him. Upon investigation the wife admitted the beating, and swore to a warrant against him.

BANDIT SUSPECT
ESCAPES RETAKEN
(By International News Service)
LOS ANGELES, June 8.—Arrested as a suspected cafe bandit, a man giving the name of Julius Carrilla early today "held up" an office at police headquarters and escaped, but was recaptured after a chase in which several shots were fired.
Overhearing plans for the proposed holdup of a cafe, Patrolman W. H. Mack and B. L. Snyder gave chase to four men in an auto, but only captured one of the suspects, Carrillo.
After taking him to central station, the officers were about to book him when he drew a gun and pointed it at officer Mack, forcing him to throw up his hands while the armed man fled.
As soon as the erstwhile prisoner disappeared, Mack took up the chase and fired several shots at the fleeing man. Two other officers, hearing the shooting, joined the chase and re-captured the fugitive. He was returned to the jail and held on a charge of carrying a deadly weapon.
In the old days it took ancestors to put one in the upper class; now all that is needed is a sucker list.
