LIBERIAN MISSION HAPPLED BY "JINX" LOS ANGELES, May 22—A Jinx' Notorious delayed the pilgrimage to Liberia planned by Rev. J. H. Lewis, colored Pastor of the "Church of the Living God." A year ago the crusader and his followers were prepared for the trip to Liberia on the pastor's "ark" which had been under construction for months. But when the craft was launched, instead of gliding gracefully into the water and staying afloat, it dived to the bottom of Los Angeles harbor. Undauntled by such misfortune, Rev. Lewis started his plans anew and negotiated, in San Francisco for the use of the good ship Burda. Recently his plans seemed nearer realization. "Trouble, trouble, trouble! There's nothing else but trouble. Somebody's mislaid the lifeboats on the ship Brutus now, and that old ship can't sail without 'em." Despite his many troubles Rev. Lewis has found consolation in the fact that an emissary is now on route to Liberia. His name, is David Fraser, colored, freight agent of the Liberian Transportation Steamship Company and also vice-president of the same concern. He is now headed for the Liberian shores via New York and London. Fraser, it is announced, will "check over large quantities of Liberian hardwoods, which have been floated down to the sidewater awaiting shipment to Los Angeles." According to Pastor Lewis, Liberia is doing all it can to help matters along and is piling up freight of all kinds for export to California as soon as the Brutus begins regular service which may be in July, if she ever sales of Ford the United States quarter of 1925 mous total of $3 million record in Ford Motor Company period of month 135 per cent over last year when it totaled 168,500. This increase of 135 per cent over the same months last year when Ford retail deliveries totaled 168,500. Even these stupendous figures do not indicate the number of sales that could have been made had production facilities been greater. Every month dealer requirements have been far in excess of the company's manufacturing ability. For May dealers or Borges reached the enormous figure of 300,000 Ford cars and trucks. Following the expenditure of millions of dollars for new machinery, expansion of manufacturing units, and enlargement of assembly plants, necessary to maintain the existing high standards of Ford manufacture, production has been gradually increased since the first of the year until at present the company is operating on a schedule in excess of 6,500 completed cars and trucks a day. While reservations now are being put on early predictions that this year would see 2,000,000 cars and trucks produced in the United States, increasing demand for Ford products will, all indications are, keep production at capacity rate for the remainder of the year, bringing it well over the million and a half mask by January 1 next, maintaining the established Ford percentage of producing as many cars and trucks as all other manufacturers combined. Barker, vice-president of the companies, that April was the largest month Maxwell, Chalmers, Ford recorded. He said that Zavala ran into the rear of his truck, and he did not know the accident happened until others stopped him and told him so. Zavala is said to have been hurt about the head. The hearing is to be held later. Thurston has been released on his own recognizance. SEE THIS TAG ON Every Orango ORDERS STILL MOUNT Maxwell and Chalmers, which by their tremendous growth in the past two years have given automotive experts cause to rank the advances that have been made as forming one of the greatest achievements in motor car history, again hold the local business spotlight with the announcement by Arthur E. Barker, vice-president of the companies, that April was the largest month Maxwell-Chalmers has even experienced, both in number of sales and in volume. The records of the present organization as well as its predecessors are surpassed in the sales figures for the month. Mr. Barker states that 8,587 cars were sold for the month representing a total business of $7,058,276. This is about 20 per cent greater in number of cars and about 20 per cent greater in volume than the highest previous month in all Maxwell-Chalmers history. It is also pointed out that despite this immense production and sale, orders on hand May 1 exceeded by a liberal margin the total on hand April 1. This applies to Maxwell and Chalmers collectively and individually. Indications for May point to a sales volume that will probably show an appreciable increase over the record month of April. High production is being reached in all Maxwell and Chalmers plants in Detroit, Dayton, Ohio, and Newcastle, Ind., and with orders steadily streaming in, there seems but little question that Maxwell-Chalmers has set a record for one month's business only, to shatter that record within another thirty days. SMALL WHEAT CROP TOPEKA, Kan., May 26.—Kansas will harvest its smallest winter wheat crop in five years—39,538,000 bushels according to May estimates issued today by the state board of agriculture. Last year's production was 116,745,000 bushels. The Hessian flyinch bug and late rains cause the small yield. June beetles have nearly $9,000 pits or organs of smell on their antennae.
