WEED CHIEF THEFT OF SOIL MOISTURE
A significant statement of experimental data just issued from the Farm Adviser's office indicates that weeds and not capillary movement and surface evaporations are the chief robbers of moisture in California orchards and vineyards is the conclusion from experiments now under way by the College of Agriculture cooperating with the Division of Agriculture Engineering of the Federal Department of Agriculture. Preliminary reports on these experiments presented at various fruit growers meetings have created wide interest. From these preliminary reports the false conclusion that cultivation is not necessary has been drawn. The real fact brought out is that unless growers are indefatigable in their war on weeds in their orchards and vineyards, the moisture that should be kept for the trees and vines will not be available to them.
In the experiments that have brot out the fact that weeds are the chief offenders in robbing moisture from the soil the further fact has been brought out that however valuable cultivation may be for letting air into the soil, it has little, if any, effect on soil moisture conservation except through the removal and prevention of weed growth.
The experiments that have brot out these striking facts have been conducted by Professor F. J. Velhmeyer and A. H. Hendriekson at Mountain View, Davis, Delhi, Whittier and Brawley. Prune trees planted in tanks at Mountain View have used as much as 1250 pounds of water per tree in a period of eight months, while only 28 pounds of water have been used in the same period by similar tanks containing no tree or other vegetation.
In the five field trials involving thousands of soil moisture tests no significant saving has resulted from cultivation of the soil, provided all weed growth was kept down by surface hoeing.

DOG BITES PASTOR
Rev. John D. Cart, pastor of the Cypress Nazarene church, is "shying off" from dogs, especially white ones since his recent unpleasantness with a dog of the Cypress vicinity. The dog made a more or less artistic wound on the Rev. Cart's left leg, as he was making a call. He hopes, however, to be able to fill his pulpit next Sunday.
JORDAN ANNOUNCES PRICE REDUCTION
Forecasting a general cut in motor car prices, owing to quantity production and decreased overhead costs, the Plain Dealer received this telegram from the Jordan Motor Car Co., Inc., of Cleveland:
"The general downward revision of motor car prices made possible by decreased overheads due to the large volume attained by the leading manufacturers during the past several months was definitely forecast today when the Jordan Motor Car company issued a statement indicating that a spectacular price revision would be announced Sunday, May 28. The definite amount of the reduction cannot be made public until Sunday, owing to agreements previously entered into by the Jordan Company with the distributing organization, but it is said that the reductions will be sufficient to give Jordan price leadership in its class.
fore emphatically recommends early turning under of cover crop and all weed growth as soon as practical after the spring rains in all non-intrigated orchards and vineyards. It also recommends sufficient summer cultivation to keep down weed growth. Beyond this it finds that continual cultivation to save soil moisture is not necessary because the experiments show that this practice is not effective in moisture conservation.
Professor Velhmeyer will discuss this vital subject at the Citrus Institute, Fullerton June, 15."

STRIKE SNAGS IN FORMING CABINET
By DAVID M. CHURCH
(L. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
LONDON, May 24.—Premier Stanley Baldwin began to strike snags today in re-forming England's Tory cabinet.
Sir Robert Horne, former chancellor of the exchequer, offered that post in the new government, sent word he could not accept, owing to business interests.
Austen Chamberlain has been offered a post but probably will confer with Sir Robert Horne before giving a definite answer.
Another possibility is that Leopold Amery of the admiralty may be taken into the cabinet.
The Morning Post said Lord Robert Cecil, whose recent political activities have been in support of the League of Nations, had been offered the post of chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster.
Sir Robert Horne conferred with Premier Baldwin today. It was reported he had intimated willingness to join the government later when his business affairs permit.
50,000 TURKS ARE READY FOR ACTION
ATHENS, May 24.—50,000 Turkish troops have been concentrated in Thrace for action against the Greeks, according to a report received here today from Salonika.
The Greek premier denies this country is sending reinforcements to the Maritza river—the Greco-Turkish boundary in Thrace.
The situation in the Balkans has become extremely serious.
Advices from Lausanne say allied statesmen are nervous, fearing an outbreak of war. There is anxiety that Bulgaria, Jugo-Slavia and Russia may be dragged in if a clash takes place between Greece and Turkey.

TRACTOR SCHOOLS
DIRECTT BENEFIT
Since Orange county has more tractors per acre than any other county in California, a large attendance of interested tractor owners and operators is expected at the four-one-day schools that are being offered by the Agricultural Exposition Service of the Univ. of Calif. The first is at Mr. V. V. Tubbs' ranch, Tustin Friday, May 25th; Saturday, May 26th at W. W. Perry's ranch, Villa Park; Monday, May 26 Allen Bros. ranch, Garden Grove; and Tuesday May 29, J. H. Cruise ranch, La Habra.
Those wishing to bring their tractors or gas engines to work on at any one of these schools may do so. Regardless of whether you bring a tractor or gas engine or not, bring overalls and be prepared to stay all day as school starts at eight and is open until five o'clock.
Practice work will be given in valve grinding, ring fitting, bearing adjusting, magnet timing, carbureter adjusting, trouble finding and such other adjusting and fitting as may be necessary. Those that bring tractors or gas engines bring such parts that need replacing.
