"UNCLE JOE" CANNON IS LIVELY AT 87
Joseph G. Cannon, familiarly known the country around as "Uncle Joe," has had another birthday anniversary. This was his eighth one. His friends and neighbors in and about Danville, Ill., his home city, gathered to celebrate the venerable old Roman, who shattered all records for length of service in Congress.
In an impromptu talk to his neighbors gave the admonitory message, "Have faith!" He adjured the people to believe that the Nation will survive—that it will rise to meet successfully the perils which may beset it. Here are a few words from the Danville Nestor worthy of quoting and remembrance:
"I have learned that America will rise to meet her problems. I have learned that good will triumph over evil. Have faith in the government of your fathers. Show your faith by works to support that government. Have faith that right will prevail."
This gospel of faith supplemented with works is wholesome. Even though, in public life, Mr. Cannon may not have been so forward looking as millions of his countrymen desired, yet these work to support that government. Have faith of experience and observation in governmental affairs, are reassuring.

DEADLY HAZING IS NOT TOLERABLE
Northwestern university has a hazing scandal that will not down. A bright, promising youth was done to death in the most brutal manner from all indications, and the crime has been concealed for two years. There should be the most rigid investigation. There should be relentless prosecution of all who had anything to do with the killing of this boy. And there should be a housecleaning in that university and in all other universities, colleges and schools where brutal hazing methods obtain.
There may be harmless hazing episodes which may be tolerable. But any resort to violence or brutality is wholly un-American and intolerable, and public sentiment should demand reforms wherever this evil may exist.
NEW YORK LETTER
BY LUCY JEANNE PRICE
NEW YORK, May 15.—Once more here is proof that the idle rich depiction of the movies is not exactly accurate. One of New York's richest and presumably idlest debutantes is Gloria Gould, daughter of George J. Gould. And what is Miss Gloria doing with those idle moments. Trying on frocks, sipping tea? Not at all. She is learning to cook. From this her first season in society, she snatches time to take practical, thorough cooking lessons twice a week, not in any exclusive school, either, but in the cooking rooms of the Y. W. Regular course dinners are what she most delights in preparing, and she admits that last Christmas she asked for an electric stove for a present!
For the first time in our history, American banking will take its place upon the highseas. It is to be a Fourth of July celebration on our part, for on that date, the great Leviathan will make her first trip carrying- the Stars and Stripes, and she will carry a completely equipped office of one of our biggest trust companies. Banking will be carried on with the aid of radio, and will give traveler full banking service while they are enroute.
Even courts of justice have difficulty in not carrying personal tastes and prejudices into their work. Dennis Murphy was arraigned the other day before Judge Talley, charged with stealing five ukuleles from a freight car. "I don't know whether to regard you as a male-public benefactor," said the judge.

COMMENTS ON THE PRIZE
PIANO MAKING AMERICA
NEW YORK EVENING POST
Boston will celebrate next Saturday dredth anniversary of the first pianist Jonas Chickering, whom William Steed "the father of American pianofortune." A carload or two of women and men in the musical world will visit this occasion. At the banquet the speaker will be Calvin Coolidge, Vice of the United States, and music is vided "informally" by Elly Ney, Schnitzer, Erno Dohnanyi, Guy May
Even courts of justice have difficulty in not carrying personal tastes and prejudices into their work. Dennis Murphy was arraigned the other day before Judge Talley, charged with stealing five ukuleles from a freight car. "I don't know whether to regard you as a male-factor or a public benefactor," said the judge. "In the house next to mine is a young man who plays one of these instruments. I'm tempted to give this defendant his address instead of a prison sentence." And he did parole him for a week at that.
Many times in the past twelve months Manhattan has grown excited over the reports that Queen Marie, of Roumania, was coming to visit us. New York has been particularly anxious to entertain this best looking member of European royalty and each time her coming was rumored, our leading hostesses have gone seriously to work on their dinner lists. Now at last we are assured definitely that September or October will see her in our midst and the rivalry with providing amusement for her is growing intense.
New York banks have no romance and little heart. I have suspected that on several occasions, but now I have my judgement confirmed in a purely impersonal way. They are almost united on frowning upon "50-50" marriages—marriages in which both husband and wife continue as breadwinners after the wedding ceremony has been performed just as before, and which have found increasing popularity in New York life. Where the two principal works in the same bank, one or the other is requested to hand in his resignation immediately after the wedding. In some cases it is the bride who is asked to quit, but not always. In other instance a decision is made as to which member of the alliance is most efficient and valuable to the bank and that notice of dismissal is given to the other—and that most valued one is not at all infrequently the girl. At the National City Bank, the Guaranty Trust, and others of the biggest banking institutions in the city, the rule against both working is iron-clad.

So Boston, after all, is a leading critic, Philip Hale, treacherous a few years ago, "off the map." It may not care to hear the Trilogy adequately performed by him from Berlin, but it rises nobly to one of the first of its great musical instruments.
Europeans cannot deny that they are today made in America. No abroad ever brings along his forement because he knows he can go one over here. To be sure, it was and Germany that the first real were made—so called because, thus hammer mechanism, one could play softly or loudly at will. The first instruments were, however, so crude preferred to stick to his old clavicle provvement was slow but steady, to such firms as Eard in France, in England, Bechstein, Blutchner, dorfer in Germany the instrument stage where American inventive gave come into play, with the results To a foreign sneer that we have composers as great as Beach or Bacon always retort courteously than the best pianos in the world anyway as harps, though it may not be eminent musician refused to go unless he felt sure he could play made in Lyon & Healy in Chicago. What Jonas Chickering did—now years ago, but in 1853—to make mortal was to combine the overstake a metal frame in one casing. The in a square piano, which he did complete. At this point the Steinberg in and still further improved the action of the piano in their own firms contributed their invention small, thus making the best Americas incontestably supreme.

cannot deny that the best pianos made in America. No artist from brings along his foreign instrument he knows he can get a better one. To be sure, it was in Italy that the first real pianofortes so called because, thanks to the chamism, one could play on them readily at will. The first of these were, however, so crude that Bach stick to his old clavichord. Imwas slow but steady, but thanks as Erard in France, Broadwood Bechstein, Blutchner, and Bosengermany the instrument reached a American inventive genius could play, with the results just stated.
On sneer that we have no native great as Beach or Beethoven we retort courteously that we makeimos in the world anyway, as well enough it may not be true that an musician refused to go to heaven it sure he could play on a harp on & Healy in Chicago.
Us Chickering did—not a hundred about in 1853—to make himself im-into combine the overstringing with one in one casting. This was done piano, which he did not live to at this point the Steinways stepped further improved the tone and piano in their own way. Other attributed their inventions, great or making the best American pianofortely supreme.
